It’s Time For A USC Update

You want to know how ridiculous things are going right now.

I spoke to someone who is close to Clay Helton, has met Mike Bohn and Carol Folt and is considered in good graces by everyone at USC.

So what is happening?

“Sounds like he might be safe but I don’t know, there are conflicting stories I’m hearing,” they said.

So even people who should be in the know are being strung along.

An announcement has to be made today. But who are we to tell the powers-that-be at USC, who always know more than us, what to do?

  1. I just love to see Scottie twisting in the wind… cause he doesn’t know anything and he’s not as tied in as he thinks he is. And all of his anonymous sources are dried up…
I said it weeks ago, that poor little wolfie would be throwing a tantrum in his pj’s, in mom’s basement, because USC isn’t doing what he wants it to do when he wants it done!

      1. Scott isn’t plugged in at all. He’s not even allowed on campus. He gets his information from guys in the equipment room (who aren’t told anything themselves), and other “anonymous” third party sources. Maybe he used to be plugged in, but that time passed when Scottie was politely issued the order to remain 1000 feet from campus for harassing the coeds.

Admittedly, those other outlets are also searching for information, but they’re not pouting about it every hour. But the reality is that nobody in Athletics or at the University has ever said that Clay’s job was really in jeopardy… That’s all been media and fan speculation. Even the “spokesman” that refuted Maya’s attempt at breaking a story, wasn’t an official statement from the University.

The reality is that the University and Athletics, doesn’t deem Scott’s or any other “fan’s” concern as credible. And rightfully so.

      1. Budda,

What is the story on Tesselone? This is the first I have heard a negative thing about him. Do tell.

  2. Wow…we thought we were getting a new captain in Bohn who was going to right the ship, but apparently the captain’s job has been taken over by Folt, who must be getting cold feet about replacing Helton.

    Another clusterf*ck, what a surprise.

    1. Bohn owes it to himself to talk to press…. if only to say, “I got this…don’t worry—everything will be in place by Friday.” You’d think that USC would know by now that press black outs are the absolute worst way of handling ANYTHING.

      1. Nobody that matters is listening MG. This particular practice is called “benign neglect.”

MG, you still have time to make the bozo u Three Stooges matinee – you know MG, it’s time to laugh a little.

      2. 67 –Even not very swift lawyers have what is known as the “stall statement” (e. g., “Our investigators are looking into that right at this moment —we’ll get back to the court ASAP”) at the ready —it keeps the court off your back while you figure out what the hell you’re doing.

      3. Michael, can Bohn claim there is a problem with discovery?

As in, “I tried to watch special teams practive, but suddenly the overhead lights went out”, or “As soon as I showed up to watch the deep cover drill, Pendergast told the corners to pull up lame and take a break.”

      4. Ha! [Yes —that will cover for his not knowing dick about Helton’s practices ….but he still needs something new and different to cover for this coaching “search”]…..

  3. Scott Wolf –always overreacting. So the players don’t know who’s coaching them in Alamo Bowl, recruits don’t know who they’ll be playing for, fans don’t know if there’s light at the end of the tunnel —-

      1. @GoTroy22 Certainly hope that Maya is right.. that the others out there are bent about him scooping them. We’ll find out soon enough, however I wanted to add that according to a very close friend, a retired long-time sports journalist with many connections, he says that Maya is a genuinely very good guy, a responsible dedicated journalist and it would definitely surprise and unfortunately hurt to find out if his scoop was not legit. Supposedly committing a significant cardinal sin of journalism that could cost him for years, especially since the story is so huge. So my fingers are crossed for Adam’s involvement in this huge story.

      2. Gillyking, thanks for comments about Maya. It is interesting that Maya did cite “several sources” when he broke his story, which means that more than one within the cone of SC silence spoke to him.

My guess is that it is business as usual at SC, in which the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing, hence all of the conflicting statements. Business as usual for SC…

    1. @Bohner Well Mike, regarding my TAF renewal, my season seats etc, I hate leaving you in. the dark but i simply cannot respond to your inquiries at this time. I hope you understand where I’m coming from.

      1. @MG…. Actually I did email AD Bohn as a response to one of his initial outreach letters.. It was a welcomeing to the Trojan Family kind of note, but with a very descriptive addendum regarding my personal feelings on why Clay must go.. plenty of the main specifics etc… topics @ the culture of failure, the destruction of our brand, Clay’s deer in headlights entity, recruiting disasters, player favoritism, Championships being out of his capability, home game attendance, nationally televised tv embarrassments, losses to rivals, and our only primary wins being against the bottom tier competition etc… and, it was responded to with a cliche filled ‘form letter’… Hence my current frustrations now.
So, one of my bigger fears now is that I am blindly wondering if he’s going to be influenced by the establishment, not realizing that they are not his friends… Caruso, Lopes, Tess…, Roberts, and that if so, does he even have any autonomy to run the dept? Might this new job actually be too fucking big for him after all? I truly believe that Bohn and Folt both have a lot to show us.. and hopefully it’s in our best interests.. and that expedience is very real.

  4. The actions of the administration clearly scream that Clay Helton will be retained. Because it makes no sense to fire him now, as oppose to after the game against UCLA . Helton is out recruiting with a smile on his face, and appears to not have any worries about his future. And remember, nobody at USC has ever said Helton’s job was in jeopardy, it was the fans, and the print media’s assumptions.

    1. I would think that if he was not being fired, they would clearly have said so by now. Instead, “a school spokesman said on Sunday afternoon that a decision on Helton has not been made.”

There is still hope for a change…

    2. Noting also that his being out there recruiting.. he’s recruiting/offering all the wrong kids for the most part. Kids that an elite coach would never offer. This is NOT Unlv,Texas Tech, Byu, Fresneck St, ucla.. for crying out loud!

  5. Due to the silence from the Athletic Department, I had assumed that Bohn was finalizing a deal for a new head coach, which would be announced in conjunction with the termination of Helton. But as the days drag on, I can’t help but think they’re actually finalizing the staff changes (buyouts, etc.), which will be announced in a few days along with the retention of Helton.
Either way, they’re hurting the recruiting class by not making a public commitment. If they fire Helton, then the damage to recruiting should be minimal. If they retain him, they’ve shot themselves in the foot for no reason.

One other thought: Bohn is an agent of change. It’s quite possible that he’s being sabotaged internally by the old guard with misinformation leaked to the press and bad advice on how to conduct this hiring/firing in terms of public relations. (Lopes, I’m looking at you.)

    1. Yes, Bohn COULD be getting sabotaged by USC lawyers and accountants and the Old Gang —but —if that’s true —he needs to plow through them and do the deal HE wants….

    2. After listening to Colin C. The USC head coach job is not what is cracked up to be. High cost of living and the administration is cash poor. Great head coaches already are being paid more to stay. It wont hurt SC to keep Helton one more year with air raid and a new defensive coordinator/special teams coach. Only Urban Meyer, Dabo Sweeny and Nick Saban could make USC relevant again.

      1. Well, it may not be best —but get ready –I think Helton’s what we’re getting….

      2. Long Beach, I think that there is plenty of coaching talent out there who could produce a great team with the talent that SC already has.

Matt Rhule at Baylor is one guy – he has engineered huge turnarounds at Temple and Baylor, which went from 1-11 to 11-1 in two years.

  6. Those of you concerned with recruiting being damaged… USC is currently ranked #76 nationwide and #11 in the pac12… not far to go to get to the bottom. This being the case, I’d fire Gomer/Helturd, right now – to begin the process of recovery from the abysmal recruiting outlook. Put a guy like Meyer in, and watch the recruits land at SC – it’ll happen overnight. And revenues, through the roof, you’ll sell season tix and fill Jerry World with Trojans. Keep this clown, and get ready for the eColi to be a ghost town of sorts…

    1. The lawyers and ‘brain trust’ telling Bohn not to do exactly what you’re suggesting are the same one who told Haden not to fight the sanctions and the corrupt NCAA….

  7. Either was….USC is in a black hole in recruiting and this type of stuff only hurts the program. It’s worst than the NCAA scholarship limits.

  8. Is there a worse way in the Galaxy to get off to a bad start in a new job than if Folt and Bohn keep 9 Lives? Alienate easily over 50% of fans, alumni and donors. FOLT AND BOHN WILL BE RESPONSIBLE for Clay’s Future if they let him return. Can you imagine the National disgrace we will be, on national television again, after the Alabama game? I shutter to think of it..
