Morning Buzz: USC Hunting Two-Star QB

Recruiting is going dramatically better than any of us want to admit, as Mike Bohn reminded us in December.

So today, USC is going to try and flip two-star quarterback Cade Fennegan, who is committed to Boise State. USC offered Fennegan yesterday. Let me repeat that: USC offered Fennegan yesterday.

The two-star quarterback is currently on a two-year LDS mission in Argentina that wraps up this summer. Two years ago, he committed to North Texas before the mission.

North Texas? Yes, where Graham Harrell used to work.

In a dream scenario, USC signs tight end Jack Yary and Fennegan today.

  1. Why don’t you explain to your readers why you don’t think Cade Fennegan is a good QB for USC to offer a scholarship? I’m sure you have reviewed plenty of tape and can break down his abilities, and where you see need for improvement. Or, is this just another post where everything USC does is bad? Maybe you can invent another “source” who will dump on this kid if he should accept a USC scholarship offer.

The wisdom of Scott “the big breasted” Wolf offering advice reminds me of the saying, “It’s too bad the only people who know how to run the country are busy cutting hair and driving taxis.”

    1. The scouting services have him as a two star. He was recruited by North Texas and Boise St. Obviously the staff at SC didn’t think much of him either as they only offered him after Shapen committed to Baylor and one day before signing day. I don’t like Wolf either but I think it’s clear everyone hopes to sign players who have been evaluated more highly than this. Instead criticizing Wolf perhaps you can change minds by telling us the qualities you see in this player that apparently the rest of the world does not?

      1. Let me put it more simply. I don’t like Wolf because even in the best of times he only looks for the negative. However, these are not the best of times and his criticism here seems to be valid. If you posted your criticism of Wolf on many of his other posts then you would be right in doing so, not in this case.

    2. Let’s peel away a bit of the onion, shall we. The kid is Mormon enough to go on a “mission” but doesn’t have an offer from Utah or BYU?
The facts speak for themself here.

    3. You’re happy with a two Star QB that hasn’t played in two years?
Wow, you and Helton really set your bar low.. Slovis was a three star so maybe a Two star
Fits USC since they can’t recruit anyone else!
      Get Real!
Until Helton is fired, USC Football is second rate !!

      1. Non sequitur. Nowhere did I render an opinion about anyone other than Gargamel’s “journalist” talents. Reading is fundamental.

  2. USC should not be offering 2 star QB’s. Period! Especially when 3 different 5 stars were in our backyard. It shows just how far USC has sunk. It’s not about the kid it’s about the idiot head coach and staff.

  3. The schools that are in the playoffs on a regular basis don’t have 2 star quarterbacks starting for their programs, So let’s stop pretending that Clay Helton develops lower level players to become all Americans, because its never happened under his watch. If anything, 4 and 5 star players have disappeared, and never developed under Bozo Helton… FACT

  4. Given the circumstances, why isn’t this a good idea? If Kedon and JT go down (not out of the realm of possibility with our o-line) we’re down to Matt Fink or walk-ons. I’ve seen plenty of Fink. I’ll take my chances with a 2 star instead of Fink or a no-star walk-on.

  5. He signed with Boise St. Good for him. This was total desperation, as we will most likely have two scholarship QB’s on the team by the time fall camp rolls around. The kid is not dumb, he knew it. Look who is on the team, look who is coming (supposedly). What was the pitch? “Hey last year we got our QB’s smashed up fairly quickly, We need a clear 4th guy to start some this year”

But if Clay and co. are willing to throw out an offer the day before, why not another today? We need the price is right guy (I can’t remember his name), “hey lightly recruited QB, come on down! you are the next contestant on the USC football team”

Today is not a fun day.

  6. I can’t believe that Helton and the Heritage Hall staff are so desperate to try to damage control with those fake accounts attacking the messenger! Lmaooo Jesus, it’s too obvious. I’d gargle razor blades before doing that job.

Everyone has already tore these guys a new one so I’ll let it go myself. It’s just new lows everyday. In a year or two things will get back to normal perhaps.
