USC Saturday Buzz: Big Testing Numbers Across Country

As USC is testing its own players for COVID-19, so big numbers around the nation:

LSU has 30 players in quarantine for the coronavirus, according to Sports Illustrated. Clemson had 23 test positive earlier this week. Kansas State has 14.

  • That extremely lengthy letter from the provost last night did not answer the one question USC faculty and staff want to know: When will they return to campus?
  • In Friday’s column, I forgot to include John Jackson was an offensive coordinator at USC. That means three African Americans have been offensive coordinator (John Jackson, Hue Jackson, Tee Martin).

  1. Scott –The reason the Provost’s multi-paragraph essay on the history of Europe didn’t include an answer to the question ‘when will faculty return?’ is simple: Such an answer would require particulars —like an actual time and date…

    2. I wonder if having your players infected and quarantined in June is by design. They develop immunity and then are ready to play the entire season. If 10 to 20 players get infected in October, they are out for 4 to 6 weeks and the team does not a sufficient number of players to complete the season. Interesting how the SEC teams have lots of infected players while Washington has essentially none. Call me cynical.

    1. Michael: To my knowledge, none of the players have been hospitalized. As you know, young people in good physical condition generally have no symptoms or only mild symptoms and football players would fall under this category. I am concerned that USC will start practice in late July, COVID will spread like wildfire, half the team will be quarantined and the season will come to an abrupt end. I think the SEC and Clemson have already dealt with this contingency by letting their players become infected early.

      1. Something tells me that Folt, Bohn & Helton want to play this in a way that allows USC to miss the date with Alabama ….but be ready to go for New Mexico….

      1. Interesting note in the players “requests” was their interest not only in third party supervision of covid related protocols but also of injuries. Players must feel unsure that the coach and/or school aren’t taking their interests to heart.

DO TELL: Muhammad Ali’s son says dad would have hated ‘racist’ Black Lives Matter.

On the fourth anniversary of his death, Muhammad Ali’s only biological son says that his father would be against Black Lives Matter, calling the movement “racist” and the protesters “devils.”

The legendary boxer and activist stood up against racism throughout his life, but Muhammad Ali Jr. says his dad would have been sickened by how the protests have turned to violence and looting after the death of George Floyd.

“Don’t bust up s–t, don’t trash the place,” he told The Post. “You can peacefully protest.

‘‘My father would have said, ‘They ain’t nothing but devils.’ My father said, ‘all lives matter.’ I don’t think he’d agree.

Of the BLM movement, Ali Jr., a Muslim like his father, said: “I think it’s racist.”

“It’s not just black lives matter, white lives matter, Chinese lives matter, all lives matter, everybody’s life matters. God loves everyone — he never singled anyone out. Killing is wrong no matter who it is,” Ali said during an hour-long interview with The Post.

      1. When Ali went to the hospitals to visit the seriously ill patients, old guys would say, “It’s Joe Louis!” and Bundini Brown would start to correct them but Ali would gently stop him cuz he didn’t want to embarrass anybody. He also would go up to children who were drooling and kiss them on the cheeks —something nobody else would dream of doing.
