The USC newsletter this week has items on Pat Haden and Mike Bohn turning down a soft interview.
- Meanwhile, two former USC coaches who are at Arizona State spoke to Yahoo Sports on Wednesday about the NCAA allegations surrounding the Sun Devils program.
“In a phone interview Wednesday, (Chris) Hawkins said he did not deny knowing the recruits were going to be in the area. He denied paying for or helping arrange the trip: `I’ve never paid a kid. I’ve never paid for a flight. I’ve never done any of that. I made $100,000 last year. I was the lowest-paid [Power Five] coach in America. I didn’t have the money to be paying players or paying for flights. I live check-to-check. I’m not one of the big guys yet.’ “
And from assistant coach Prentice Gill: “I’ve never bought a kid anything. I’ve never given a kid money. I’ve never done any of that. I didn’t purchase his ticket. I didn’t pay for anything. I do know that he came to Arizona. He came and visited, he did. He told me that.”
If this happened to SC, SC would recieve another 3 year 10 scholi penalty. Since it is ASU, they will allow the player to go there if he wants.

Agreed. Let’s see if this gets the NCAA’s full investigative attention. I doubt it.

An impotent NCAA will allow ASU to “hand-slap” itself.
Irrespective, here’s to hoping we trounce ’em.

Very weak denials. They encouraged athletes to visit during restricted recruiting periods. And saying you didn’t play for the flight leaves open a host of other forms of compensation —like who paid for the hotel?

Timing is everything. If ASU receives anything more than a warning, they will sue. “It’s a free country and the students can visit our campus if they want to. We were asked to show them the campus.”
Now that the NCAA has had their pants pulled down for a swat, they are exposed. The paper today was saying the NCAA needs to pursue legislation to regain its power.
No big deal anyway. I looked up ASU on the inter web McGoogle thing and they have a track record of violations, some which would have carried the death penalty, but they haven’t been slapped much. This is will be history by the end of the summer.

I never understood the love for Herm Edwards. He’s never been a good coach at any level. I can’t imagine any ASU fan thinking it was worth hiring him.
Also, how pissed would we, as SC fans be, if Helton hired a full time DB coach as inexperienced as Chris Hawkins?

As though Herman didn’t have full knowledge. Complete low IQ responses. If that’s the best they can offer then why not just STFU.
I watched a couple of YouTubes on what went on.

Believe the ncaa has rules that make the head guy responsible for the actions of subordinates (especially on campus)… if he didn’t know, he most likely should have.

Bland wasn’t on a recruiting trip. He was in Vegas for a bachelor party for a friend when he met with the snitch and his fbi buddy. Money never made it home or even to the bank, he spent it all that afternoon at a strip club making it rain.

Hey, if Andyain’twinning can claim “I didn’t know squat” innocence and get away with it, so can Herm Edwards.
That they are head coaches and should have known doesn’t count.

He was still a great game coach —he just wasn’t Sir Galahad (as UCLA fans like to think of him)…..

He was a good game coach. On the other hand, I think anyone would be pretty good – take the ’69-70 ucla team. Jabbar starting, IMO greatest college player, and having Steve Patterson and Sydney Wicks sitting on the bench.
Anyone remember the 1970 game? Owns? 46-44 vic bell dinging away. Sam Gilbert crying away on his mob money stuffed in his closet.

Owns is right to a point. Helton could claim ignorance and ain’t nobody is going to disagree. (And that’s during a game).
My theory is Helton has an ear piece and some guy in the stands telling him what to say.

Dude has, to my knowledge, no wife and no kids. WTF is he spending his $ on if he’s living check to check with no savings???

$100,000 annually goes a long ways in Tempe. Housing costs about 1/3 of what it would cost in a decent LA area.

They should go into receivership. They have been fraudulent for decades, pretending to support the kids who generate the revenue. And the handwriting has been on the wall for a long time.

Owns, your own Bill Walton acknowledges that only a couple of those are legitimate and that “ucla should be on probation for about 100 years.”
Once “Slammin’ Sammy” Gilbert got involved, ucla basketball became the dirtiest program in college hoops. And everybody knew it. Dean Smith. Bobby Knight. Even Tarkanian joked about it.
