I have no heard him mentioned for the USC job at all, but a Pac-12 coach tells me the Trojans should pursue Kentucky coach Mark Stoops.
“That’s who I would hire,” the coach said. “He really knows what he is doing.”
The Wildcats are 6-2 and could easily win their final four games to go 10-2. Stoops also was defensive coordinator at Arizona so he has Pac-12 experience. Some fans might confuse him with his brother, the colorful Mike Stoops, who used to be the head coach at Arizona.
Stoops might not excite USC fans like Luke Fickell or even James Franklin but he is a hot name in coaching circles.
Very middling overall record at Kentucky. But considering it’s the SEC, Mark Stoops is probably doing an excellent job there. Not a hot head like Mike Stoops who I guess is on the Sark staff at Texas. Just not who I see for USC though. But who knows with Mike Bohn calling the shots!?

Check out Mr. Wolf trying to play it off like he’s not a Fickell fanboy…LOL!
Too late Wolf, you already exposed you have a hard-on for Fickell. He’s your boy so if USC hires him, when he tanks you can’t be talking shit.

No to Stoops.
Hey Blogger, what’s the word on Aranda? I think he would make a great choice.

The first “scoop” we got from Wolf has Mario as the lead candidate. Either he is being fed BS from someone at SC or he is trying to help them divert attention from the top candidate.
Only a few people at HH know the top guy and they will throw attention on other directions

The Stoops brothers definitely have “connections” in CFB.
Seems like Bob was the brains, and Mark and Mike followed in Big Bro’s footsteps.
I’m not buying the Stoops line.
1. Aranda
1.1. Aranda
1.11. Aranda
1.2 Fickell
1.25. Matt Campbell–still has a great defense and run game and decent pass game.
1.155 Peterson AND Lefty Kellen Moore (package deal) and a bunch of Chris’ defensive assistants. Recall that the Beaver dude, Smith, was CP’s OC/QB guy.
2. Fickell
3. O’brien or Franklin or Smith or Stoops or Kiffin or Clawson or Fleck or Orgeron or Sark or some other retread who has failed at another P5 program.

Kellen Moore would be good but we are not going to get him.

Moore would be ecstatic to get a call from us. He has 2 yrs experience coaching altogether, and as a QB coach (the first under a coach that was fired), and the other as OC, both under HCs that were basically OCs. I think he’s a great coach in the making and I’d be happy because I’m cool with a big time gamble on the energy of a brand new, young as hell, bright coach. But I could see how more reasonable people would call it crazy.

Kellen was a great QB at Boise and learned under the great Chris Petersen. Although I like him very much, I’m really hoping for a seasoned experienced HEAD COACH. It is really a jump from OC to HC and I want that jump to be proven successful before coming to SC.

Tim, I agree with “most”. However, SC has been a training ground for many who have not shown that to be true. No more unproven candidates, please. I know I sound jaded, I am!

If hold USC high level admins to Tim’s sensible bar, less than half would clear.

Maybe if USC doesn’t get the top 5 established HC’s on its list, you roll the dice on Kellen Moore. I’d probably take Moore over Mark Stoops and other HC’s.

Firing Clay Helton 2 games into the season does improve USC’s chances of getting Chris Petersen. Instead of having to make a decision within about a week if Helton was fired at season’s end, Petersen has 3 months to think about whether he wants to coach again and to consider the USC opportunity.

I am sorry I had to keep rereading the first two sentences. I hate that this blog has no editing feature but I guess so does the blogger.
It is sad when the highlight of the season is firing the head coach two games into the season. It is sadder that everyone has been in new head coach searching mode for the past four seasons. Couldn’t we have waited to fire Helton until this game? I mean this is the tarmac game isn’t it?

Nope…Forks will be up (heat way up on Herm after firing of sideline reporter who simply said what is obvious – Devils should be undefeated this season, and instead are mediocre, due to poor coaching – Herm can recruit/motivate, but game-day coaching never been his bag)…smelling 42-17 ASU…

But…but…that kind of score (which way exceeds the Vegas line) would indicate USC completely gave up by the 3rd quarter…..

I just read Dan Weber BRAVELY going after 3 USC coaches who have been fired. Three coaches he was afraid to look in the eye when they were here…..fucking up our program.
If that weren’t hilarious enough he talked about the awesome times he spent “hanging” with Dave Aranda and Mel Tucker…..

Over the past decade has certainly been far, far better than the rest of that crowd (a couple of them are at best shills, and one is Peachy Vichy, to follow your theme). Knows the sport from a coaching perspective and from following the program during Pete’s tenure- over time he got increasingly muzzled (just like Hyde got marginalized like a more sullen version of Corso in a way) – see above comment about this week’s firing of Arizona State sideline reporter who got fired for pointing out obvious with respect to Herm Edwards poor job of game-day coaching.

He was more critical during Kiff…then over the years it seemed that he started to pull his punches a lot more (again, I reference the ASU sideline reporter getting fired this week for criticizing the coaching)…he would criticize play calling and technique…I always got the sense that was his code for “this is the most I’m allowed to get away with.” I’m with you though on criticizing anyone who has been an appeaser during this…the problems with the program were pretty well on display a long, long time ago, and they weren’t going to be corrected by replacing assistants with equally bad or worse assistants…but that didn’t stop Lynn and Carol from doing it anyway…
