USC Morning Buzz: Can Lincoln Riley Start Today?

I hope Lincoln Riley can start this week at USC.

He has a lot to do: Instill discipline, get rid of coaches/support staff that need to go, clean up the roster and start looking for new offensive/defensive linemen.

Obviously, no coaches will be fired this week with USC playing Cal on Saturday, but Riley will start hiring his own staff.

  • ESPN reported Sunday night that Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch will join Lincoln Riley at USC. Grinch already has Pac-12 experience with Mike Leach at Washington State.
  • Riley’s buyout at Oklahoma was $4.5 million. See how easily USC is spending money. It’ll probably cost another $20 million to pay Riley and his coaches. But some claimed USC had no money to buy out Clay Helton.
  • I don’t really care if Donte Williams stays or leaves but I don’t like this belief that there are a group of players who are only at USC because of him.

If these players don’t have anything other than Williams keeping them around, then get rid of them. I’m sure Riley can find better players in the transfer portal.

  • For what it’s worth, that huge puff piece on Mike Bohn last week did not result in the L.A. Times getting the scoop on the hiring of Lincoln Riley.
  • This is why Riley is coming to USC. Would you want to deal with the SEC?

    1. In Other News…it’s been reported that pudly76 is doing an exceptional job as expected down in Georgia polishing Helton’s balls. The humidity is giving pudly a bit of a sore throat though.

They say he’ll get used to it.

    1. Word is that Luke Fickell wasn’t given much consideration at all as a possible hire at USC.

Fickell’s #1 Fanboy Scott Wolf will likely not be pleased to hear that seeing how Mr. Wolf was all in and totally infatuated with that hick.

Fickell never had a chance in hell at fulfilling his #1 Fanboy’s dream of him coaching USC.

Maybe this will help Scott Wolf get over the pain he’s feeling from being duped by Mike Bohn…

The possibility of Luke Fickell coaching at USC?

That Bozo and his Stepford prissy ass wife who thought she was wanted here in L.A. couldn’t have been more wrong.

That prude was putting out statements about how she wouldn’t want to live in Los Angeles and how she had a say where her Bozo husband could coach and it turns out that nobody asked her or her clown husband to come to L.A.

Maybe now she’ll learn to keep her mouth shut and not assume shit. She made an even bigger clown of her old man and herself. That bitch needs to go climb under a rock, cling to that bible of hers and shut the fuck up!

  1. With Riley you don’t need Donte who is only good at recruiting. As a DB coach he sucks and has been exposed.
Give credit where credit is due, good job Bonehead uh I mean Bohn.

    1. Donte isn’t the only coach for USC’s defensive backfield. The Trojans have a safeties coach – Craig Naviar. He deserves some of the blame, too. I wouldn’t put it all on Donte.

  3. Well, I’m not as excited as most about this hire.

Is it a flashy hire that will grab recruits attention, yes.
    Is he an upgrade, yes
Can he attract top assistants, we shall see, I would assume yes.
Will he be a hard ass with the players and not allow them to fuck around ? I have no idea.
I don’t like the fact that he seems to not want to compete with the big boys in the SEC.

Riley isn’t a defensive coach, his teams score but his defenses give up a lot as well.

Can he recruit and develop OL and DL players ? He can sure as hell develop QB’s and WR’s, does that sound familiar ?

Sark was kicking this guys ass until he had a brain fart and lost the game.

Riley mysteriously disappeared for “personal reasons” the Tuesday of the Baylor game. That means that the so called experts and people with ” sources” never had a fucking clue about this. That week was Nov 12th, that’s 15 days. I never saw Riley’s name mentioned anywhere.

    From CBS Sports:

Oklahoma struggled in the trenches against teams from the SEC during his entire tenure, and he would have been forced to do that on a weekly basis once the move is complete. What’s more, he’d probably be doing it with a roster that isn’t comparable to the majority of teams he will face no matter how the SEC divides up its divisions or pods.

Will he work out ? Only time will tell. I don’t doubt USC will be miles better next year and maybe sniffing around the playoffs in 2024, beating the chumps in the PAC 12 should be easy for this guy, it’s the SEC and occasional BIG 10 or ACC stud team that we’ll have to wait and see if he can beat.

Better days for USC football are ahead, we’ll just have to wait to see if this guy can get USC back winning NC’s.

USC football isn’t dead anymore, and that’s a good thing.

    1. Oklahoma has been to the playoffs 3 times in the previous 4 years. They’ve routinely beaten Texas, Baylor, Kansas State, TCU & Oklahoma State (and we should be glad they lost to the latter this year –it set this deal up)…..

      2. And from what I’ve read, he’s keeping Harrell.

If that’s true, then are we back to hiring buddies ? Why keep that incompetent fuck ?

        Liked by 2 people

      3. USC doesn’t have unlimited money to light on fire so it makes sense to keep Harrell and let his contract expire after the season than pay him $1.2m to go watch wrestling full time and pay what ever the new guy gets.

    2. Considering you have to win your Conference before you can get to the playoff it’s wise to construct your team to win your division. The BIG12 is throw the ball around looney tunes not war in the trenches SEC. Doesn’t make sense to have a 320lb run stopping nose tackle when you’re playing teams chucking it up 50 times a game.

It’s also significantly easier to recruit African Americans to the South and Los Angeles than it is to land of cows and country music.

  4. Like I said yesterday. Get rid of Donte and everyone of the assistants on this half ass staff immediately after the game on Saturday night. If players are loyal to Donte, put them into the transfer portal and let them go wherever he ends up. I’ve said this before, Donte is nothing more than one of these half ass 7on7 coaches who peddle their players to the high schools. And this is exactly why Mater Dei is in hot water with this hazing incident. But that is a different story, altogether.

  5. Riley will run a better version of the air raid offense but it is still a pass happy offense. One of the problems with the air raid is that the defense has to practice against a physically soft offense and when they ultimately face a physical line with physical backs such as Ohio State or Alabama or even UCLA this past year they get crushed.

    1. UCLA will crush a Lincoln Riley-coached team? UCLA looked liked a JC team playing against Riley in 2019. Riley took his foot off the gas pedal before it was even halftime.

      1. As I recall, the score was OU 34, brubabies 7 before halftime, and that is when Riley cleared the bench.

This is really good for the pac-12, as it forces all the teams to get better.

  6. One of the things I like about Lincoln Riley is he likes dual threat/mobile QB’s which adds an important dimension to the offense. USC has lacked a QB that can take off for a first down for a long time.. Most of the great teams in college football have QB’s that can both run and pass. I think Jackson Dart is in this classification, but is he fastest enough to be a real dual threat.?? Slovis, obviously does not fit the mold, and will probably have to transfer.

So, before we start kissing the ring of this new guy,
what’s his name, the SC Stallion from Mulefoot, or
preparing to anoint him as the Second Coming
(or the First Coming if you are of that particular Persuasion)
I am curious to see how he plans to turn this SC-pumpkin
into some kind of palatable Prince Charming.

Speaking of being curious, I still have not heard back from
Mr. Charles R. Smith, despite my 2 inquiries, as to how
Charles knew that AD Bon-Bon had been emasculated by that
Carol Folt, “not that he had goods to begin with.” I questioned
Mr. Smith as to how did he find out that Bon-Bon has no goods.

I don’t know, can you help me out here, MG. You know anything
about this?– I gotta get back to work.

She only signed off on hiring someone new when she say all the money the program was hemorrhaging – donors not writing checks, nobody buying season tickets and a 3/4 empty Coliseum every other Saturday. She had to do something as there’s no way to cover your ass when everyone sees all the red ink flowing.

  8. Guess wolfie thinks Riley shrank from the sec challange as he repeats it again…if true then SC only got an ok(small ok) and not a true OK coach. Most good coaches leave for a better overall situation ,incl $$$$, they don’t run from a challenge.
SC is at the bottom of the barrel, guess that is not a challenge according to wolfie. It is not going to be a top 4 program at SC next season, off to the BCS final 4, etc…the hellton cancer allowed to get deep into the system will have to be dug out ,so plan on SC recovering next year and being respectable, maybe winning the Pac12 …maybe in year 2, next yr they may compete in Pac12 south and win it.

  9. The major draw for is recruiting – I dont see him as a guy who is afraid of competing. Oklahoma is usually in the #8-#12 range for recruiting. Hard to imagine anybody could do better than that for Norman, OK and that particular university.

At USC, he will get into the top 5 for recruiting and that will make a difference.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I do see him as a guy who was afraid of going to the SEC, he was against it. He didn’t want the LSU job and he didn’t want to play them week after week, that’s troubling. He chose USC because he has to beat ONE school, Oregon.

If he can do that and then beat the big boys in the playoffs, great, but he better get his OL & DL ready.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. So aside from Alabama and Georgia, which powerhouse SEC teams was Lincoln supposed to afraid of in the SEC? Auburn, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Miss State, Florida, Vanderbilt, Missouri and South Carolina are mid-tier or bottom feeders. Stop falling for this crap about the SEC is the strongest conference just because they play each other and ESPN is in their pocket! USC is back!!

      2. No two ways I was pumping Aranda’s tires as much as anyone. Woulda been 100% on board if he was the choice. That said, gotta respectfully disagree about Riley being afraid of competition, the SEC, or anyone for that matter. People who run yellow from challenges don’t tell their brand new wife they’re gonna become an uppaid GA. They don’t take promotions that pay $10k/yr. People that run scared don’t bet the house on themselves in a dog eat dog biz playing the long game card. People playing it safe who are trying to protect a reputation as a winning coach don’t come west to revive a high profile, high pressure, high expectation program that was receiving last rights. Sure, the SEC is tougher top to bottom. Wins would be much harder to come by. What also would be much harder to come by in the SEC, at least in compare to the USC gig, is the notoriety, acclaim, and financial windfall/stability that comes as reward for resurrecting a kingdom.

      3. If he wasn’t afraid, why didn’t he stay at OU and go to the SEC ?

Why did he bitch to his AD that he didn’t want OU joining the SEC ?

Sounds like someone who wanted no part of the SEC

And there is some hope. Dabo Swinney was a WR and offensive coach, and he’s had outstanding defenses. I’m hoping Riley will evolve as an HC.

I’m looking forward to hearing alot of top recruits getting added to USC. I wonder if they will start to be announced, or if it is all going to be silent and then on Early Signing Day, a ton of players switch to USC?

I also wonder if there are top players that are ready to enter the transfer portal.

We should really target Eli Riks, we could use a seasoned corner, as Steele leaves for the NFL.

So will Drake London maybe come back for a final year? I would not announce it for a few months, after they recruit for wide receivers and land a bunch of top talent. The receiver and QB rooms might be the most talented in college football next year. Tight ends look good already. Need a complete transplant of offensive line. Need to flush out some of those scholarships taken up by the 3 star players that Clay brought in.

2022 might be a transition year, as the o-line will be young and the defense will need to gel together. I still would think a 8-4 season is the absolute cellar this team could deliver.
