I’m told to expect some more personnel moves — and departures — after Wednesday, which is Signing Day.
- Cal coach Justin Wilcox turned down the Oregon job, per the Oregonian. I can’t imagine why Wilcox would want to stay at Cal but he is an odd one at times.
- USC football coach Lincoln Riley is going to be introduced at today’s basketball game at the Galen Center.
- Did you see Mike Garrett at the Heisman Trophy ceremony?
The photo shouldn’t be of Donte, it should be of the new RB coach, Tashard Choice:

I’m disappointed in USC fans who have turned on Donte. He gave 100% to this team. Is he a great position coach? I dont know. But he is a great person. He needs to be mentored by a top defensive coach. I am guessing that Donte will be the safeties coach under Grinch, so Donte will be mentored and will improve both his position skills and his overall understanding of being a defensive coordinator.
He is 100% a part of the Trojan Family and we need to treat him like it. Riley is not going to put Donte in a position he cant handle.
Riley is making alot of really good decisions so far. I’m disappointed that Bedenbough didnt come, but we can get a great OC/o-line coach, so that is fine. We have formed a really great coaching staff, but need the pieces on the line now.
I hope we can keep a few offensive line recruits from signing with anyone until they talk to our new o-line coach/d-line coach. Specifically, Hero Kanu, Devon Campbell, Ernest Greene and a few others I cant remember this second.

Riley needs to add a genuine Trojan somewhere, not just keep adding outsiders. But it would have to be someone who fits in with his competitive mentality and would not undermine him for future opportunism. Does that leave anybody? Here’s a way outside the box choice. Matt Barkley. I know he is still in NFL. But he would be a possible loyal fit for Riley and he has the smarts and gravitas to be a coach or AD or general manager some day.

He was thrown in way over his head and couldnt remove the two coordinators, so why are USC fans blaming him? Let him get mentored under Grinch/Riley. Retaining Donte is NOT going to limit this team’s upside potential.
If Graham Harrell is retained, then I will be a bit frustrated.

I’m thinking that Donte might coach up a better DB staff (if there is room for him) if he is not trying to recruit and be a HC. The CB’s played better* in COVID2020 against some good offensive teams in that shortened season.
Bullock and Alford were pleasant surprises in the DB, and IPM was a disappointment. I forgot that Bullock was recruited as a WR, so he took over the DB position fairly quickly.
Grinch has quite an interesting history–playing at Mount Union in college. I think Mount Union pretty much never lost a FB game. Grinch is a winner. He’s gonna be a good DC once he gets some 4-5stars!

In all honesty, I thought Donte would leave (not be fired) on his own. If LR wants him…that’s good enough for me. Let’s see how Donte does under a respectable program. He’ll want to build up his résumé, like most other coaches, and if that translates to success for SC, then all good!
It’s like having an athlete in a “contract year.” They need to produce.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Unpopular view point as many want to see everyone canned but Donte can still be a positive. If allowed to go elsewhere, he can actually hurt us with recruiting with established relationships recruiting against us. How they retain him matters. His defensive backs did suck last year so it will be interesting. More importantly, why is Harrell still here and most importantly, who are our O and D line coaches?

2-cents worth downgraded to 1-cent:
Wiley Riley may disown the entire present SC coaching staff, but not ALL the players. Riles must start with the need for offensive and defensive linemen, and these guys are not plentiful, and there is much competition for their services.
Evaluate the guys that SC presently has, some are actually quite good, so keep those, develop those, while all the while be out recruiting new ‘Uglies’ freshmen.
What about Slovis?– This is tricky, and perhaps he will enter the portal anyway and eliminate the potential problems his remaining a Trojan might present. Or of course Slovis might make himself available for the NFL draft. After his freshman sensation year he looked like a lock to
cut-out from SC after this, his third year. But now, who knows.
I hear reports that Wiley does not recruit or develop linemen very well. Since this is the core problem for SC football, I hope this SC coach has learned a thing-or-two about how to get past the First Round of the Playoffs– ‘Uglies’ is another way of saying ‘winning football.’
And Harrell is a buddy of the Coach, I am told, so is the
Helton Football Model going to continue along this dead-end path?
Also, is SC too far behind in the 2022 recruitment campaign to make much of a difference?– I do note Riles has been very busy during his first week on the job. Of course at a salary north of $180,000 per week, every week, for the next 4 or more years, one would expect Riles to awake each morning with a bit of a start to his step.

Thank you for the update 1967. I guess we will not hear from Scott until after SC finally loses a game.
I am happy to see Drew getting a better foothold than he had last year, because he is badly needed this year. Mobley has improved as has every player 1 through 9 in the lineup. Mobley admitted as much. Improvement.
And the SC boys were not too shabby last year, although I felt they were too one-dimensional with the younger Mobley last year (so ONLY an Elite-8 was the best they could do).
Of course the Tournament is an iffy affair, and I do not know much about the relative strength of other schools. But this is a fine time to be a Trojan basketball fan!

While I have supported Slovis all this year and last, even ESPN in their article today noted that Kedon regressed. Some of the problem was a lack of experienced WRs who could get open.
Anyway, wishing nothing but 100% success for Kedon OUTSIDE THE PAC 12. Riley SHOULD NOT PERMIT Kedon to trf within the conference.
Pac 12 schools looking for QBs: Cal (if Garbers leaves), CU Boulder (fer sure), Stanford maybe, UDub. Jedd the Fisch’s–for sure. OSU
Oregon? I wonder if Brown will return in 2022 with the COVID exemption (he’d be a sixth year senior). Penn State’s Clifford is returning for his sixth year.
DTR will return to UCLA, as he has no hopes for an NFL career.
De Lauria was outstanding at Wazzu (might have beaten USC had he played the whole game)
Daniels will return to ASU (see DTR above)
Rising at UU will be a PIA for the PAC 12 DC’s for some time. Played very well.
So I could see Slovis trying to stay in the Pac 12. Riley should not permit it.

If Wilcox turned down the Oregon job he is crazier than I thought. He is a decent defensive coordinator, and that is about it so he has no chance to win anything at Cal. I do think he knows he must go at least 10-2 with Phil Knight-Oregon every year, or he will be fired so the Oregon job was a 2-3 year job at best especially with USC rebuilding quickly.
How Oregon stays off NCAA probation with the amount of illegal money Phil Knight-throws into the program. In the 70’s and 80’s Oregon was the poorest athletic program in the conference until Knight opened his checkbook.

What do you want to bet Scott found a girl and is now painting the town red with her?
— Didn’t think you would take that bet!
Scott usually posts so fast you would think he was running late to catch a plane. Besides, besides SC basketball, these are the dog days of SC sports, and apparently Wolf is not too keen to write about Enfield’s boys anyway.
Still, “Where are you Car-54?”

Signings already happening, including a LB from the south who runs a …. 4.38 40. Just needs to put on some weight or else play strong safety. Also getting an Oregon decommit and a WR decommit from the faux Irish.

Might have already been posted above, but a big fella from TCU–Mr Earl Barquet–has trf to USC for 2022. In all likelihood, he was well-coached by Garry Patterson (a known defensive-minded coach) and Riley likely liked Earl.
The ND decommit–CJ Williams from Matre D’–would be a fantastic addition. Fingers crossed.

Yes, Riley tried to get him to OK from the get go!

trojan1967,
If that lberr has legit speed, keep his weight right where it is. He can play lber or safety. However, to have a lber cover a wr or te would free up the db’s for more coverage.

You assholes finally may have a team and your fearless leader is nowhere to be found! Ha! Typical Southern Cal

Worried about Scottie. He had some health issues earlier this year. Fingers crossed for him. Or maybe he just doesn’t know how to handle so much USC positivity…

The fact Fucketh Youeth (it sounds more elegant in old English, right?) doesn’t even consider the possibility Scott may not be feeling great says it all doesn’t it?

FU,
You are a jerk and an ass and a schmuck. Scooter could be ill again or he is just taking it easy and getting ready for a big blog. but what ever, he needs time and prayers and that is what he is getting from me. You might want to try praying. It might help you become a nice person.

Where is the recruiting class of ’22 ranked as of NOW??…. I can’t detect any show of movement on any of the sites yet…..

It doesn’t look like USC is exactly killing it in terms of O-Line recruits —not having a big name O-Line coach is catching up with Riley. So –no matter how great we look at QB, receiver and running back —we got ourselves some of the same old problems next year unless something dramatic happens real fast……

Michael,
I think that Riley is looking for an olman and dcoach. Then probably Sc will pick up JC oline and dlinemen. That will give them time to recruit for the following season. I could be wrong though.

Or maybe, MG, this new regime can “coach-up” the Trojans’ linemen it has inherited.
However, all things being equal (which they never are), an improved
SC 3-star still will not be able to compete with a 5-star.

Thanks guys, for putting a possibly positive spin on things!
[What’s with ESPN? Their Official Site still has USC at the bottom of the recruiting rankings. Let’s see some love!]……

USC hasnt had alot of action so far on signing day. You would expect a flood of recruits to be excited by Riley at USC, but somehow, they are not hitting on some recruits that seem like they would jump at this chance.
Riley definitely needs an o-line coach and d-line coach.

Southern Cal may have gotten Brown but he is gonna get killed with the O line they have. He made a mistake!!! Southern Cal getting nothing but 3 stars. Lincoln was a little too late to the party.

That was always my fear as well– Riley being too late to the party, not you changing your name.

People..please understand this early signing period means very little. Lincoln Riley cannot turn this program around in 2 weeks. Be patient by the end of February you will notice a big change in the 2022 roster.
The NCAA needs to get rid of this December signing period, and change it/ or move it back to June or July before the season starts, and still keep the big national signing day in February after the college football season.. This way if there is a coaching change at a university after the season or bowl games a new coach has time to get caught up in recruiting, and the kids have more time to make the right decision as to which university to attend.
It is tremendous to see a kid sign in December, but most kids want to take their time to see who the colleges sign on as head and assistant coaches. There is too much hype today for this December signing day by the media, and it is way too early. Where you begin the recruiting season, and where you end up at the end of February will be a different story at USC this year.

Caleb Williams going on OU players’ podcast was supposed to lead some to believe he’s staying at OU. What he said and what he didn’t say makes me think he’s coming. Came to play for Riley and seems to hold no grudges about him leaving; gives a “public relations” response to the hiring of Venables and surely doesn’t add anything for Okies to hang their hat on.
Happy with Dart but would love to see Williams come, for nothing else than to burn these whiny OU fans who give zero credit to Riley when it comes to his history with QBs.
