USC Morning Buzz: Another Assistant Leaves Who Didn’t Really Start

New USC defensive line coach Jamar Cain has been hired by LSU.

He is the second coach to leave USC before really starting, joining running backs coach Tashard Choice, who went to Texas.

What does it all mean? USC might be paying Lincoln Riley top dollar but it is getting outbid for assistant coaches by the college football superpowers.

It will be interesting to see who Riley hires for these spots because he wanted recruiters and now will have to look elsewhere.

  1. It’s not just that these coaches are leaving ….it’s that they’re leaving SO fast. I’ve said it 749 times…but… once more won’t hurt. Bohn did NOTHING to bring Riley here. Bohn has no idea what he’s doing. Riley is here because he was ready to come. Period. Folt and Bohn had nothing to do with it. BUT it looks like Bohn and Folt ARE making their usual impact on the hired help: a sense of revulsion and need to get fresh air.

      Unless Riley can keep his assistants and/or replace the ones who are leaving with Big Names (not starlets), recruits are gonna start getting a bad feeling about the program all over again…

      1. come on, these coaches are in play this year. riley hired a really great offensive line coach after some false starts. he will get a really great defensive line coach.

        riley is a great head coach but he still needs to work for what he achieves.

        the 2023 recruiting class is going to start to look pretty insanely good. 3 5 stars right now and another one coming soon. i really think usc can aim for the top recruiting class in the nation in 2023.

        riley is going to be able to use many of the existing pieces of the USC roster on the offensive side, they just need a transfer or two for the o-line. I also wonder if Caleb Williams is coming to SC, he is much more proven than Dart at QB.

        the defense is the big challenge now. that front 7 is a mess and will need to get some transfers to fill it in. i hope we can get hero kanu, he is a future star in the middle on defense. and the defensive backfield will need to really be coached up.

      2. All true —- but I still can’t remember coaches saying “yes…oh, did I say yes? I meant to say no” quite this fast ever before…. maybe it’s best not to overlook what that means….

  2. Ed O is being contacted to return to USC.
    We will see if USC’s Title IX / Woke Police allow it to happen.

    2. Ed O is a great D-Line coach but does he really want to become an assistant again? Nevertheless, He’s also a great recruiter. They should give him a look.

    3. Ed O is far more “radioactive” than Urban Meyer.

      Ed was PROVEN to intervene on behalf of his star RB in a sexual assault case. Urban was just suspected of not intervening in his WR coaches assault case.

      O’s best days are behind him.
      He rode Burrow (not Burro) just like Helton rode Darnold.
      Never was a good head coach.

  3. No way Orgeron comes back at this point he has a very young beautiful girlfriend who wants him at home for a number of reasons. Home for Ed wil remain in Louisiana.

    Riley should contact the Oregon defensive line coach who is a great recruiter and coach. He came to Oregon a number of years ago after being at WSU.

  4. I like Riley’s staff, but would like to see an SC guy or two get hired. I’d love to see Ed Orgeron come back as DL coach and Asst HC … highly skeptical that will happen though.

    1. Carol Folt should be evicted from her $8 million USC-paid-for mansion at Adelaide Place. Let’s move in JR and turn it into “Troy House”. Like Nissan’s Heisman House, a gathering place for former USC players and USC fans. Shenanigans and shits-and-giggles will ensue ✌️

  6. The fact that big football schools like Texas and LSU are going after Riley’s coaches are proof positive that he is hiring really good people. Outside of Deland McCullough, I don’t ever remember anyone going after Heltons assistants. Riley has the drawing power that Helton never had. There are a lot of great assistants out there. He has the clout to get them. He’ll get other good assistants.

      1. There’s a lot of great assistants out there. He’ll find someone else just as good. I hated to see them lose the running backs coach. But if Helton could bring in a great RB coach, sop can Riley. As far as the other guy is concerned, I’m not crazy about him bringing in his whole staff on defense because that defense was not all that great. I wish he would have gotten a better DC(which will probably happen in the next few years).

      1. Tyson Helton is an outstanding coach. But Clay didn’t exactly have to go out there and recruit him to come like he did McCollough. Tyson is his brother.

  9. I think less coaches are convinced of the Air Raid Part III and the holey defense than the fans.

    LR (God forbid) without some success will probably off-load some coaches quick, and who wants to sign up for that?

    I think we ducked two mediocre at best coaches. I also think this is good as LR is being forced out of his comfort zone and clique. LR’s big chance here is to evolve, not do what he’s done before and continue a downward cycle… On staff we could probably benefit from at least one guy on staff with USC ties who can recruit would help a lot– and a Poly guy would not be a bad idea. We used to be the #1 spot for Poly talent, now the best go east, much of it to the SEC of all places.

    This is SC not Oklahoma– we don’t have OU boosters and tie ins to help, we win by dominating LA, CA, West of the Mississippi and north of Oklahoma. And we do it with a West Coast / BYU offense and big boy football, and dominant, smothering defense, speed in the secondary, a dominant line and big, fast, aggressive linebackers. We’re not trying to go 0 and 3 in playoff games, and we have a much harder slate than Oklahoma vs 2 I-AA schools, dysfunctional Texas and the Little 8.

  10. You can rationalize that it’s better that Choice and Cain bail out now vs a year from now. But it’s not like anybody Riley hires is going to be at USC is going to still be here 4-5 years from now. Hire the most qualified coaches, but give more weight to the USC, L.A. and West Coach prospective coaches. California is a scary place if you’ve never lived there before. If LSU or Texas offers more money, makes it a easy decision.

  11. Happy New Years, fellow USC fans✌️I’m more optimistic about the football program than I’ve been since 2008 with Pete Carroll. Maybe 1 step backwards today, but 3 steps forward tomorrow. Optimism feels good✌️

      I just listened to Riley on ESPN –he sounds so authentic and smart. We’re in good hands if he can avoid giving an inch of turf to Folt or Bohn —they’re bad news…..

  12. USC should’ve put a “140” on the helmets in 2020. Not that the midget president Carol Folt or her stooge Bohner have any idea when USC was founded (let alone shit-for-brains Clay Helton).

  13. Wow. The Pac-12 is now 0 and 8 in the last 2 bowl seasons. With a pathetic UCLA approach to covid protocols. (probably would have been 0-9) If you add in USC qualifying and actually going last year to a bowl they would have been 0-10. Including the last 3 years they are 4-11 with a potential to be 4-13. The Larry Scott effect just keeps giving even after he is gone. Enough with the self righteous commercials about student empowerment (all national schools athletes are empowered, I was one 30 years ago, and even in its depths, it wasn’t that bad, go to school, train hard, compete, graduate) and championships won (mostly stanford in a bunch of remote sports and not the big 4 (baseball, football, basketball, track. 1 in track 1 in baseball in the last decade). The world has changed. But it has for every school in the nation, so suck it up Pac-12 and stop sucking so bad.

      1. No, just a fractured pelvis only to come back next year and score at conference. Most of those championships were in women’s sports so I’m not disrespecting them, hell I coached some of them. But I can tell you that ever since Larry Scott became associated with the conference, there was no plan to actually make it better, just cherry pick stats to market it like his Yale degree tells him too to spin narratives and pick up his bonuses (and spend gaudy money like a horny sailor on a weekend pass). Like most corporate CEOs spinning narratives to Boards of Directors. (See Eisner at disney) One quarter he is sobbing about decreasing revenues so that the BOD will allow him to lay off 1500 or so, then the next quarter (because of the savings) he’s justifying to them that he deserves his yearly 1 million dollar bonus. You can spin and cook internal numbers any way you want them, if you are a good chief with monetary motivation.

    1. Pay them…and stay the fuck out of their way. Make sure you get quality people (which Riley most certainly is) and then LET them do their job. Don’t make them say politically correct crap when they’re asked questions, don’t over-discipline their players over b. s. and don’t expect game balls just for visiting the locker room.
