Guess Whose Birthday Is Today?

Lynn Swann turned 70 today.

I almost find it hard to believe his terrible tenure as USC athletic director took place.

The day he got hired, I was critical of the move. The USC sports information director, Tim Tessalone, told me “I didn’t understand that the Trojan Family wanted” former players like Swann to succeed Pat Haden.

Swann’s worst move was giving Clay Helton a contract extension with no buyout. He also decided not to fire Helton when it was obvious he had to go.

But Swann also did plenty of other things, like alienating fans by moving their seats during the Coliseum renovation and going across the country to attend an autograph show while skipping a university retreat that discussed the Varsity Blues scandal.

His penchant for playing golf also was a sore spot (thanks to yours truly) and went viral to the point where long-time New York sports-talk host Chris “Mad Dog” Russo ripped USC.

“And then I look at USC, that fraudulent joint, that’s got Lynn Swann playing golf every afternoon,” Russo said.

Listen to Russo’s tirade here.

  1. He obviously wasn’t the right guy, and USC doubled down on selecting an AD who had no sport administrative experience following Haden. Thankfully, those days are gone, will try to remember him as a great WR from the early-mid 70s.

    1. Time heals all wounds, but some errors take more time to forget than other mistakes.

Giving Ton-o-Hel that extension is, well, never mind, you already know.

    2. The era of dumb and dumber with Haden and Swann. Thanks Nikias for nothing!
(where’s Tebow obama at?) Especially letting Clueless clay to be hired by dumb then to be extended by dumber. You can’t make this shyt up. While USC became clown college and the laughing stock of college football. It didn’t matter to anyone who had the power to make changes as long as everyone was grifting and making money for themselves.

    3. trojan1967,

It is hard for me to seperate the USC player from his personal life. I had season tickets to USC basketball and I went up to him to congratualte him on being hired as the AD. I went to say hi and he looked at me like was a leper with dementia. After that, I have never cared for him. His stardom for playing fell as well at that point.

Pat Haden might have done great damage to USC but at least he was willing to shake hands and say hi to the fans.

Swann is just plain not nice.

    4. I’m appalled by the reaction of Clay Helton receiving an extension, he deserved every penny of it.I loved it when he allowed me to give him a reach around, his face was always glowing. And of course I received reciprocation, but I always had to remind him to slow down. 😀

  2. Happy Birthday, Lynn. I know you’ve taken a lot of flack…. for stuff like being absent 4 days outta 5, selling autographs to 7 year olds, presiding over the worst admissions scandal in school history, keeping Clay Helton —and, then, extending Helton— and, then, giving him a big fat raise —-

      1. Yes! The poor guy was trying… I don’t see why he has to go for the rest of his life without being our Athletic Director again…

  3. Lynn Swann was and is a pompous Twit!
I had dealings with him in 2019, when, as the 1969 football team Captain, I was trying to arrange the best Salute to Troy event for my great team. We were the 5th best in the 137 year history of USC Football. .955 winning percentage 10-0-1. The Wild Bunch and the Cardiac Kids..
    All Americans and Conference selectees..
Swann was a complete ASS. He couldn’t care less about honoring our great team. And I and many of my teammates boycotted the so called event.
    Good Riddance!
I was told that he was not liked by his NFL Pittsburgh teammates also.
    I believe it!
    Again, what a Jerk!!

    1. Bob. I’m really really sorry for the way you were treated by Swann. Thank God then he is gone. You and your teammates will live forever in the hearts of Trojan fans. You can rest assured of that. 1967-1969 were fantastic years for the Men of Troy. We will never forget !!

      1. Thank You for your kind words. Our 1969 team was exceptional as was my 1967 and 1968 teams. The USC athletic department really screwed us. Swann and Haden are both completely incompetent and really asses. As the team captain, I had conversations with both about the honoring of the teams from 1967-1967. Both AD’s could care less about the Salute to Troy event. I’m sure they’ll have a big event for their 1972 Team!

  4. Who looks like the fool here……….if your Lynn Swann why not take the job even though he knew he was not qualified, and thought playing golf was part of the job for an ex NFL Jock. The real fools are the ones who hired him ..Max Nikias and the Board of Trustees including Caruso. Helton and Swann reported to inferior upper management superiors who unfortunately did not do their homework during the hiring process, and even a poorer job managing personnel within the athletic dept and beyond. Who created this Country Club atmosphere for others to follow at USC——-Max Nikias. It all starts at the top my friends.

    1. Despite all this, and sad to say, Caruso despite his awful leadership of BOT, would be a major improvement as LA mayor. The again, Ed G. would be a major improvement as LA mayor.

      1. trojan1967,

did you hear what Pelosi said about Bass, the person running for mayor? She said she is her friend and is a pillar of what the progressive is all about. That tells you all you need to know about her. Go for Villenueva, the sherriff.

  5. That catch by Dickerson in the end zone to get the 21-21 tie was really good !! Irish argued past the end line but he was in. I saw it and he was definitely in the end zone and not juggling either !!!!!

    1. OOPS. I’m really getting old. That was 1968. The 1969 game was that 14-14 tie in South Bend. On the last play of the game the Irish tried a field goal to win the game. It was straight and true. Hit the crossbar and bounced back. I exhaled but was still mad that we didn’t get the win back there like we did in 1967. That 1967 win in South Bend was our first one back there since 1939. The 1939 win was 20-12. We won behind Ambrose Schindler and Grenny Lansdell. The 1967 game was something like 24-7 behind O J.

  6. Mr. Jensen if Swann is, was, and still currently a jerk what does it say about the people that hired him. Good upper management creates the culture, and hires the best people to carry on that culture so the organization will continue to grow. Either someone did not do their proper homework in hiring Swann, or Swann was the perfect fit for the country club atmosphere Max Nikias and company created. Lynn Swann, was not qualified to be an Athletic Director at any university yet he was unfortunately the perfect fit for the type of management leading USC at that time, and so was Clay Helton. Swann, came here with the same reputation your talking about, and his attitude was I’m close to retirement they called me first, so why change things. His top priority coming here was survive, fit into the country club culture, and current management team at USC which we all know had more respect for new dollars donated rather than saying thank you to those that built the Trojan empire like yourself. Bottom line our great leaders of the past including Jess Hill, and Dr. Norman Topping who built the walls of this empire would have never considered Lynn Swann for the AD Job based on his lack of experience as an athletic director, and manager of people.

  7. Swann is worthless just benefited like many people of being in the right place at the right time. What’s sad is USC called him, and begged him to take over as AD so he did not even apply for the opening AD positon which makes Nikias and his staff look even worse. Can you blame the guy for taking a cake job he was not even qualified for, and frankly very shocked USC came calling to take the job.
