An NFL Draft Success Story

Imagine the reaction you would have gotten a few years ago if you predicted Drake London, Drake Jackson and . . . Velus Jones would be drafted in the first three rounds.

Jones is a great example of the transfer portal working. He couldn’t get any USC coaches (Clay Helton, Graham Harrell) to give him a chance so he went somewhere else and drew the interest of NFL teams. His fast 40 time helped too but if he stayed at USC he wouldn’t have any tape to accompany that 40 time.

What would have been interesting at the time is to see how many people would have thought Isaiah Pola-Mao would have gotten drafted ahead of Jones?

  • Three USC players got drafted (London, Jackson, Keaontay Ingram in sixth round to Cardinals). Two former USC players got drafted (Jones, Jack Jones in fourth round to Patriots). Almost an even split.
  • Among undrafted players, Pola-Mao signed with the Raiders; Isaac Taylor-Stuart signed with the Cowboys. Erik Krommenhoek signed with the Chargers. Chris Steele signed with the Steelers and Kana’i Mauga signed with the Falcons.

  1. USC finally won, but I was so angry after watching Jack Jones’ bullshite against Texas in 2017. Glad he was kicked off the team … good for Jack that he finally got some coaching and leadership at ASU. Compare CCH to Neville Chamberlain or Vichy France … the guy is an effing loser as a football coach.

  2. Clay Helton loved surrendering to Nick Saban in 2016, Urban Meyer in 2017 and Kirk Ferentz in 2019. “Look at what a gracious loser I am.”

    1. Watch the tape….Saban, Meyer, Ferentz and Bryan Kelly could barely stand shaking hands with doe-eyed Helton…they were afraid some of his bad magic would rub off on them….

      1. Bad magic indeed MG. In today’s San Bernardino Sun, the old stomping conglomerate newspaper of Scott Wolf there’s an an article about the final days of football at Ucla. ( should have said spring somewhere in that sentence)
If I didn’t know better, I’d have thought it was Helton spring script football. They had “teaching breaks” during each session. They were more about players comfort than football mentality. They had a spring showcase instead of a spring game ( which the sports writer lamented was nothing more than a practice in front of TV cameras)
I swear if Chip says “he’s the love of my life” about a player, I will know that the Heltonifcation of Kelly is complete.
The next stop for him is to start a Buffalo chicken wing and French fries fast food franchise company called Buffalo Chip’s

      1. Ahhhh yeah….. I would put much(if not all) of the blame on the people who hired and paid big bucks to a guy that just wasn’t qualified to get the job done…..namely, Max Nakias and his “yes” men(Haden and Swann) and the Board of Bustees, who hated football just as Max did.

  3. George, ownsie does have the masochistic tendency. We are actually doing him a favor by repeatedly kicking his can.

    1. Yes 67. I noticed that in owns. He was trying to get you rattled a couple days ago by in the end he was the one that got rattled. Owns is a glutton for punishment. You’re right. That’s how he gets his kicks. Well. It takes all kinds to make a village. But owns belongs outside the village walls like he is now. We’ll keep him out there just to kick around.

      1. owns has been coming here for years, armed with a pea-shooter, with not very many peas. It would be good if he upped his game.

      1. I was wondering out loud about why Urban wasn’t effective as a coach in the NFL and someone within earshot said, “because at Ohio State his players had to do what he told them to do in order to get paid.”

    1. I want Urban right here. He loved Fox with Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart and he knew there was a lot of love for him from USC fans who recognize his college coaching expertise. He should move to Manhattan Beach full-time and run for Congress.

    1. He’s proven, fills a position of huge need, and he is a LB Poly kid. I know he mentioned wanting to go back to ASU, but needed to check out NLI deals. I would assume we are putting a nice one together for him now.

    1. Sorry owns, that last game was a Trojan horse. If show cause chip lost that one, he wouldn’t have been extended. Enjoy several more years of football bliss.

      1. Damn ’67, UCLA hasn’t ever had three (3) HFBC’s in 1 year or 5 in three (3) years. Clown U enjoys that pathetic distinction.

The Bruins bitch slapped bozo FB all over the field last year and no amount of rah-rah whiny loser excuses will mitigate UCLA’s 62-33, crumbling mausoleum VICTORY.

  4. No team with chip kelly as coach will go anywhere.

He is 2-22 vs. teams with a winning record
ucla fans see that he is burned out, doesn’t care, doesn’t recruit
The RB is never above 25% of capacity (even giving away tix)
Last time chip played a Lincoln Riley team, it was 34-0 before halftime
They didn’t even have the budget to put on a spring game
Nobody outside of alums 50 and older care about ucla football

      2. George, that is what happens when you pick the WordPress absolute bottom of the barrel blog option. They throw in some randomness, like changing handles or avatars, just out of the blue, in the hope that the blogger will choose to buy a more expensive option. But our Scottie will stick with the Walmart version.

  6. DESPITE HAVING CLAY HELTON as their new head coach Georgia Southern has more fan interest than the UCLA program, and definitely draws more people to their games. Georgia Southern owns and operates their football stadium UCLA pays rent to the City of Pasadena.
No one cares how many players UCLA had in this year’s draft because the program is irrelevant with zero Pac 12 championships in the last twenty years, and never in the race for a National Championship.

    1. Extending Chip was an act of desperation. They won’t get the $$$ from the administration to hire a top coach, seeing as how ucla athletics has a $100 million deficit the last 3 years. So they doubled down on the big donut eater until 2027. Chip is happy, bruin fans are not.

    2. Still tommyd, UCLA had 6 players drafted and mighty, beloved SUCC just three (3). Ouch! Correct my arithmetic if I’m wrong tommyd, but 6 is 2x the bozo piddling 3.
