USC Friday Column Supplement

More on card stunts. USC used to do them like this “Westwood Sucks” card stunt in the 1970’s.

But it’s still something that is done around the country.

  1. At my graduation, the year shall remain undeclared, this goofy fraternity brother named John Kerwatt sat next to me and fell asleep. It was a riveting ceremony.

    1. I had Raymond Burr as the speaker at mine. All I kept thinking of was, “When will he mention that the Martians are dead”. He was the reporter in the original, “War of the Worlds”, 1954. What is great is, about two thirds into the movie, right after the aliens past City Hall, they show two churches. Those two churches are a block from where I live. They are off Lake St. You have the protestant church, the the white church is St. Elizabeth. That is my grammer school.

      1. I just looked up my old buddy, Kerwat is the correct spelling, and he is still alive in the Valley.

        Memories are a kick.

It seems even the little green men know we have incredibly weak leadership at the moment and now may be the time to attack!

      4. I saw the original War of the Worlds in ’53 or’54 and still see it on tv …I don’t recall Burr, but next time I watch I will look for him; I know & saw he was in the original ’54 Godzilla…

    2. I was working at Doheny Library and didn’t even realize it was my Graduation Day till I saw my friends setting up folding chairs on the front lawn…. then I went over to the Student Center, grabbed a Hostess Berry Pie and a carton of Carnation milk and went back to work…..

  2. I am glad Mora has something to be happy about; I know he is also coaching again and hope he does well…he was a good coach during ucla yrs,he beat SC 2 or 3 times, which I did not like of course.

    1. Yes, he beat us during the scholarship reductions.

But he was also the first SUCLA coach ever to cry about our drum major stabbing the field during the pre-game show. So the band was told not to do it, or they would have their halftime appearance nixed. Bartner caved.

Should have stood his ground and said the same would be done to their band the following year, when they visited the Coliseum. Cancel our halftime appearance and we’ll cancel yours.

      1. Better yet — have the drum major piss in their endzone…and then let Traveler do the rest….

      4. Oh no, So Cal invokes the auld bozo excuses, excuses, excuses loser whine. As I recall at the time, Kiffy Goat didn’t think the scholarship reductions would be a problem for SUCC.

In fact, the season before the SR’ s kicked in, Kiffy Goat had the #2 or #1, Div. 1, FB recruiting class.

Besides So. Cal, Mora essentially defeated the bozos using Neuheisels’ Bruin recruits.

  3. I wanted to walk but alas USC is one of the few schools that has no ceremonies honoring December grads, and who cares about walking after or before you’ve actually finished your last final? I remember it well – EE457, which I had studied my butt off for and actually did well on. I went to the bookstore and ordered my ring, then sweated out the next week waiting to see whether I passed my Philosophy class, the final hurdle.

    1. Not so, Regal Rita. I graduated from high school in January and from SC4-years later in January. Perhaps they changed the format after I left, and if so, you would be correct.

  4. Dear OWNS: Did you notice in the above picture even former UCLA coach Jim Mora has surrendered to the Trojan empire. We know you are thinking about it now is the best time before the Bruin athletic department and football program collapse along with the State of California due to deficit spending.

    1. FYI tommyd, Newsome just announced this year’s CA State budget surplus is $100 billion. Of course, the CA Ratpublicans want a $100 billion tax cut they had nothing to do with achieving. Ratpublicans never have a problem taking a political bow for Democratic success.

But you knew that didn’t you LJ?

  7. My graduation was at the Shrine Auditorium early evening. The business school Dean (and I think they changed the name to Marshall right around that time) was Randolph Westerfield (he may have been Thornton Melon’s nemesis in “Back to School“). Couple of guys that I started with and already graduated … showed up. I’m sure much drinking ensued.

He’ll be able to keep me up until 10. But 11? We’ll see.

Like most old farts, I’ll be up no later than 6 am tomorrow. The other big dogs will be licking my nose, letting me know it’s time for them to go out and do their business.

    2. By the way, barely hung my diploma up about four years ago. Finally got one of those double panel frames from the guy in Costa Mesa, Diploma Artworks. Top panel has a color sketch of Tommy Trojan, bottom panel displays your diploma.

Most people get the burgundy, which is his standard USC display. But I should have ordered the real Cardinal red, similar to Stanford’s. That’s our true red, not the ASU burgundy. Oh well.

Millions are going hungry, but if one has a blanket, sleep is the one enjoyment we all share equally. Now if we could only get those millions some food!
