USC Loses Another Top Offensive Line Recruit

Francis Mauigoa, a four-star offensive tackle that some of the fanboys predicted would go to USC, committed to Miami today.

This is a real blow to the offensive line recruiting because when the USC fanboys are sucking up to a recruit, it means USC really wanted him. Mauigoa is just the latest top lineman to reject the Trojans.

Mauigoa also considered Tennessee and Alabama.

By the way, these are the type of linemen who are even more valuable when you are moving to the Big Ten.

  1. So is it a Lincoln Riley problem, a school problem, or an offensive line coach problem? The guy they hired from Texas A&M is not exactly wooing any of these top line men to come to LA. The NIL isn’t working either. The same problem Helton had when he was here for years. Can’t get the right fit for the offensive line coach to recruit top, offensive linemen to USC. That seems to be the problem.

      1. I’m not talking about the movie! I’m calling how I see it of what’s been happening with the o-line, for the last 10 years. This has been a problem going all the way back to Kiffen. I just didn’t want to go back that far. When criticizing the offensive line recruiting battles. When they would all go to Stanford instead of USC. I remember and I also remember they went 4-8 last year and sucked. So let’s see how the plot plays out this year. For the movie/season to be great. Hopefully there’s no reruns or let downs, like movies from the recent past.

    2. Glad you boiled that one down for us. So LR needs to immediately hire a new O line coach or what. Perhaps the proof will be in the pudding after the season has started and people see what the USC O line can or cannot do. I think you are just a tiny bit premature on this one.

      1. My same thoughts! Judging the book by a cover when there’s a new sheriff in town is premature. The D-line is the real short-coming to start the season.

      2. Our 2022 shortcoming? It’s a tie between the linebackers and the D-line…. no wait…it’s the linebackers.

  2. Miami was the NIL $$ highest bidder. Period. Rick Caruso’s NIL donations have dried up since he has already spent $35 million on the mayor’s race, and he will probably spend more than that between now and the November election.

    1. (1) USC has a late start developing relationships with the high school coaches and the players
      (2) Florida is attractively competitive with LA with much lower taxes
      (3) Most of these young men like to be near their families……witness Conerly who could drive to Oregon
I’m not panicking yet. I just think we got a late start because helton didn’t do his job and Riley cannot be expected to mop up everything and get things perfect in this short time. I’m impressed with what he has done rather than complaining about what he has not done.

Regarding NIL, with all the celebrities around SC, I think we can compete.

  5. The USC fanboys have been delusional since they’ve been saying Clay Helton will eventually turn the program around. The fact to the matter is, Steve Sarkisian has stepped up his recruiting game if nothing else, and Jimbo Fisher is right behind him. So Lincoln Riley won’t have his pick of the litter in the state of Texas, he’ll be getting what the Longhorns, and Texas A&M don’t want. And he can forget about Florida, because Mario Cristobal has a net around that area, especially the offensive linemen. Riley can’t convince any recruits that he’s going to play physical football, because Oklahoma was always a one and done in the playoffs.

  7. A verbal commitment does not mean the game is over. If Miami falters and USC has a tremendous year offensively, the recruit may change his mind. And Yall is right, we may be able to pick-up some help in the transfer portal. This is particularly true given that some of the remaining teams in the PAC 12 are now in a very tough position and some players from Stanford, Oregon, ASU, ect. may decide to bail for SC and the Big 16.

  9. Just heard the “Herd,” and he should be running for mayor. Very convincing as follows:
SC goes from $30 million to $75 million in 2024 and $100 mil shortly thereafter

Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan are wonderful in the Fall, up to November 16 when the last game for SC would probably be played. Come December and the Winter, different story.

Ancillary to that thought, is that SC probably won’t be playing in the snow. At worst it might be 42-degrees with a bit of a wind factor.

Even travel to Utah can take up most of the day. It is not the flight time so much as the getting to the airport, waiting around for takeoff, and then settling in at your destination.

What about 10-years from now?– What about it?– The NFL has fun games every week, whereas the colleges have only a few interesting games each week. The college game is in competition with the NFL, and placing more good teams against each other in conference is the way to go.

  11. I think in BOTH of these cases, the boosters of other teams have ponied up the money and bought the players. Oregon did it with Conerly and Miami did it with Mauigoa. Without a collective USC is at a big disadvantage.

This is like fighting with one hand behind our back. Why?

This probably comes down to a belief that collective money is dirty money, but honestly, until someone stops it, you MUST participate.

Bohn had better wake up and realize that moving to the Big 10 with one hand tied behind your back is not going to be pretty.

  12. This is a major problem. Henson cannot recruit period. He can only recruit 3 Stars that are being recruited by the Mountain West Conference. He has been a complete failure as a recruiter. USC has lost its future left tackle Conerly to Oregon Community College and now it loses its future right tackle Mauigoa to the cheaters in South Beach. There is no other way to call this other than a complete and utter failure on the part of Henson and Riley. By the way, where are all of the commitments that were supposed to come out of the big July 16th weekend. So far only a 3 star linemen and a 3 star corner. Totally underwhelming guys. The Blvd/Stay Doubted and Riley need to step it up. Our entire offensive line for 2023 will now have to come out of next years Portal. This sucks. You need 4 and 5 star linemen as you head into the BIG 10. Not the 3 star variety. No excuses. Get it done!! Henson you are officially on the clock!!!

  13. I forgot to mention that Henson cannot even recruit 3 star offensive lineman. He lost a recent battle for a 3 star lineman to Washington!!! Bleeping Washington. The defensive line recruiting is just as bad!! Only 1 3 star recruit whose only attribute is that he is big 6’5? 265 but unlike SEC defensive lineman he is slow and not very athletic!!! Lincoln the honey moon is over. Recruit better in the trenches or you will become a slightly better version of Penn State and Michigan!!!

Run the Counter Trey and bulldoze UT @ San Antonio, and the Presbyterian Blue Hose and other cream puffs, then when there is an actual opponent with a defense unleash the Raid and Air it out! Okay, those teams actually will defend but maybe the QB can run for their life and clean up the mess, Sam Darnold style. That won’t work for long of course but Sarkiffin during their moment of falling in love before returning to Jesus (no, sorry that was Saban), and Helton and Harrell and now Big Game Riley the new Sheriff in Town that don’t need no stinkin’ Linemen.

(Actually LR wound up not getting some of the staff he wanted, and maybe he’ll take their input and come to Saban himself. And maybe LR and staff will learn to coach up linemen… Hope springs eternal. Can’t wait to visit Nebraska, Purdue, Minnesota and Iowa the type of teams in the middle of frozen nowhere that manage to beat up gimmick offenses that have more talent, given us a bad trip in more than one way. 15. It does make me mad when it comes to losing another recruit to Mario Cristobal especially when some of the studies that I have read show that when Cristobal was at Oregon he developed players worse than CH and his team of coaches developed them. It’s a myth that Cristobal and his coaching team developes players. They don’t. But, at least, Riley is going down to the wire with these 4 and 5 star players. CH wasn’t in the running. SC just needs to develope their NIL program and start a winning tradition and they’ll start getting those guys.

He’s a great recruiter. Obviously he has his sales pitch down well. But just look at what Kyle Whittingham did to him last year with much less talent. Whittingham developes players. Cristobal doesn’t.

Because of poor life choices, a typical keyboard tough guy works a dead-end job and lives in a rathole apartment in a shitty neighborhood or a low-budget rest home.
He is consumed by his jealousy of people who are more successful than him and his willingness to blame everybody but himself for his problems. As a result, he suffers from low self-esteem and anger issues.
In the online world, he can A.) raise his self-esteem by acting far more aggressively than he would ever do in real-life settings and B.) vent his anger by projecting his jealousy, insecurity, and sexual frustration onto others in a non-face-to-face setting
