USC’s Defense Has Thankless Task

The key to USC’s season is that while the offense is full of stars, it will be defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, who gets to do the dirty work and face the pressure of working with less talent.

Fittingly, his T-shirt today said “strain.”

Grinch was very pragmatic talking about injuries during camp.

“We’ve had a lot of guys out over the course of camp, the biggest frustration was guys get opportunities because of that and they don’t take advantage of the opportunities, and that happened a little bit,” Grinch said.

On the scrimmage last weekend, he said, “I thank God it wasn’t a game, long story short.”

Then he focused on the injured players.

“You get to be better football player by playing football. We don’t get these last two weeks back,” he said. “(The rush end) position needs to get shored up.”

Grinch’s best friend will be the favorable schedule. But he still faces a thankless task knowing Caleb Williams and Co. will get the lion’s share of the credit when USC wins and he might get the blame if USC struggles or heaven forbid, loses.

To use a Star Trek analogy, Lincoln Riley will be Capt. Kirk planet hopping and engaging with all the interesting aliens while Grinch is Scotty stuck down in the engine room dealing with the dangerous gamma rays.

    1. Wiley&Grinch are more like the Lone Ranger and Tanto. The Lone Ranger, sitting majestically with his white horse and all the trimmings. Whereas he instructs his underling, “Tanto, go to town.”

You see, Tanto had to do all the dirty work, had to clean up matters before the Lone Ranger would parade into town to apply the
      final-touches.

      Any comparisons to football?

      1. Tim Conway did a sketch on the Carol Burnett Show in which was dressed as the Lone Ranger and he’s calling Tanto on the phone trying to talk him into saddling back up. It didn’t go well…
        “…. Oh, so that’s what Kimosabe” means…”

  1. To change the subject, let’s get serious here for a moment. Silliness be damned, this is as serious as a heart attack– the SC defense is obviously suspect. And with mounting injuries, apparently the unit is getting worse.

Maybe Scott’s predicted scenario of 50-48 scoring-orgies will play out.

    1. When guys go down, the next guy HAS to step up. I think we will see a lot of stepping up coming. I have to believe Foreman will get it together and make a big push to fill the rush slot. That would make it easier to move guys around to give Tuli the license to annihilate opposing Qb’s by coming from different line ups. Our defensive key is Foreman getting into the game and performing up to his ability.

      1. When a starting First-String footballer goes down, it is true the next guy “has to step up”–

Problem is, the “next guy” is second or third string for a reason. And no matter how hard he tries, he just won’t be as good as the First-Stringer.

      2. steveg49,

I disagree. Foreman is not the key to the defense. From what we saw from him last year, he barley was in the play, hardly had a tackle for loss, and got blown off the line of scrimmage. His mechanics and physic got him killed. He needs to prove that he can play. Until that time, he is just another player.

  4. Hey TIREBITER you senile AH, is it true your nickname for your wife is “Shoo Fly.” From what I heard, your bar Flip wife, “Shoo Fly,” blew every sailor in 6th fleet – so wet mouth. Osa Messina, and Geo. Tyndall want to date “Shoo Fly.”

    # Unbeknownst to you, you senile mackerel, “Shoo Fly” is still doing her ping pong ball canon act in Compton dive bars – for free.

    1. SC defense is struggling– did you hear that Trojan offense?

So we need 50-points from you guys every game!

Yeah, yeah, I know, in reality that’s not going to happen

      But I can wish!

  6. Scooter,

This year, the defense is in a rebuilding and learning year. It will get moved, banged up, and burned. However, if they improve between games 1 and 6 by cutting down penalities cutting back rushing yardage, and less yardage in the game by 20% and bringing the scores back down in the 20’s for opposing offense, then they will be okay. 2023 defense must improve in order for Sc to be what we want, dominate

    1. This is just guess PT, I mean who knows what goes in your pinball brain, but dominant works better than “dominate” – LOL.

Might I suggest you sign up for an a ESL 100 class.
