There are so many stories about Hal Bedsole (No. 19 in photo) besides what I mentioned in today’s column.
Here’s one: In 1963, USC lost to Washington, 22-7, in Seattle. After the game, a reporter asked Bedsole the following question. “Why did the team play like they didn’t know what they were doing?”
Bedsole responded: “As a team, we played poorly and were outcoached by (Washington coach) Jim Owens and his staff.”
That didn’t sit well with John McKay. He didn’t play Bedsole the following week against Stanford. Imagine how they would be handled today?
