A Strange Signing Day Story

Here’s the weirdest story of Signing Day:

Five-star safety Peyton Bowen decommitted from Notre Dame; committed to Oregon; decommitted from Oregon and committed to Oklahoma in a span of 24 hours.

Bowen’s commitment also gave Oklahoma fans a talking point.

  1. Lincoln Riley does not need to finish in the top 5. Wait a year, then he can cherry pick from Oklahoma’s roster. Thanks, Oklahoma, Caleb and all the rest. You make for a nice farm system. Y’all come back now, ya hear.

  2. A bit of a kick in the balls when you see Texas, Miami & Oklahoma, and how terribly they played (UT improved but Sark has proven to be a not very good HC) and we are 10-12 spots below? Yes, I know we picked up solid players since the three 5* committed upon LR’s hire and I know there is the portal & post early-signing-period, but damn.

    1. My feeling is blame the administration for not allowing some outside money to flow to the incoming players. We all know it’s $$$, who really would want to play for Jimbo anyway.

      1. Once again, you sound like a Dumb Ass Fanboy. Just because Lincoln Riley got out recruited by 14 other schools, doesn’t mean it was about the money.

      2. Dude….quit with the finger pointing, it is what it is, deal with it!….really simple. Like Riley said, you basically take the hand you’re dealt and make the best of it…..

The parity in college football will suffer to the point where the integrity is called into question…..Until we see collective bargaining agreements, it’s basically the wild wild west. Riley is level head and will use all the T00LS and angles to advance the progress of USC football…..in other words, CHILL…..you sound scorned!

  3. Maybe some of these kids are lazy or not smart enough to make the grade at USC. Has anyone thought about that? So they can go where it’s easier to pass their classes and all they do is concentrate on football. Plus get a bag of cash from the NIL deals that the programs are throwing at them.

    1. …and…. please recall: Lincoln took a 4-8 team….and a 70th ranked recruiting class to an 11-2 record….

      1. Agree with you MG, which is more confounding when these schools out recruit us.
Maybe $$, maybe Grinch, but we lost quite a few battles. Shouldn’t be that hard to recruit SC.

    3. Number 24 BUMMSTER. But Chip’s not whining or making excuses like LR. I guess that shock the world 47 – 24 Utah victory really coldcocked his recruiting expectations.

  5. Merry Christmas to the blog. I’ve been in the land of the SC Gamecocks this week. My wife’s mother is buried in Darlington SC. We’re in Myrtle Beach. We drove every goat path and back lot to find the cemetery and another one where all her cousins are interred. The whole trip reminded me of when I first married my wife. Her mother heard I liked USC, so on a visit to her old stomping grounds she bought me a South Carolina football cap. I wore it whenever we saw her.
Anyway the week is winding down and we will be traveling until after Christmas. So merry Christmas don’t start a war while I’m away and if you need a Trump 2020 sticker or key chain they’re here at every souvenir store on the highway.

  6. And this is why paying attention to recruiting is an incredible waste of time. Don’t talk to me about any of these kids until their ass is in a seat has his first class. Until then, who knows what some idiot kid is going to do?

      1. ‘sodbusters’ – remember ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’?

That’s what Lee Marvin called the farmers ‘ ….you sodbusters stay south of the picket (barbed) wire…’ as he got nominated to go to state capitol by first Reese (Lee Van Cleef) and then ‘…I seconded the motion…’ by Floyd {Strother Martin}.

  7. If they are coming for the money, Riley doesn’t want them , he wants them to come here to play football. If money is more important to them ,then playing football we don’t need them. That was proven this year with Texas A&M and Miami. As for Oregon, I still say we will win a national title before they do..

    1. Well, Raul, looks like we’re NOT putting a national championship team on the field for the Cotton Bowl. Not only is Addison not playing …. Neilon and Vorhees are out as well.
I wonder whether it’s smart to play Caleb under these conditions. We saw how much protection Caleb got without Vorhees and Neilon in the 4th quarter of the Pac 12 Championship –and it wasn’t pretty.

      1. btw —anyone who saw Vorhees jumping & clowning around in New York knows he’s NOT injured. He just doesn’t want to play.

    2. Oregon is still dreaming and scheming trying to get a Natty, that’s all they do. With their 1000 uniforms. Their fans thinking they belong also. With all this dreaming, it seems like a reality to them. They had their chance the last 10 years with USC down. Now their window has closed with USC back. Time to get the best players that fit the system and program. NO more prima Donna’s just straight football players that want to be at USC and ball. Fight on!

  8. so what was it on rivals? or others? what sane person switches 3 times in an hour, ok can have him…
and how does this help SC? as usual wolfie finds something that doesn’t…plus who cares what ok does? I know I don’t

    1. 100%, Tim. Oklahoma won’t be a Top Ten team until they change coaches. [But it’s a great landing place for players who want to go 6-6 for the next couple of years]….

      1. I don’t care if ok is #1 or unranked…they are not my team…but if wolfman can poke someone in the eye he will use something inane to try to do it

  9. Many years ago (1980’s I believe) at one of the Political Party Conventions to nominate their Presidential Candidate, each state got to speak up and make a bragging statement like “The Great State of California, home of Sunshine and Movie Stars, hereby nominates Candidate X as the next President of the United States”. Every state did this with some statement of what they take pride in. The only state that referenced a sports team was Oklahoma, with a statement like “Oklahoma, home to the greatest football team in the land”. You can now understand why OU fans are pissed off. We took away the only thing they had to be proud of. BTW Gabby, I am NOT fucking Just Owns.

  10. Oklahoma. For a person who hates seeing the University of South Carolina referred to as USC, the writer seems to have no issue with comparing other schools to what USC has done. If Utah wins the Pac 12 but never the recruiting rankings, then what does that say about state of play in college football?

The two best teams in the Pac 12 weren’t in the top ten of college football recruitment rankings this past year. There are other ways to win today. Riley chose the approach that the guys who have been successful have used like Chip Kelly, Jim Harbaugh, Kyle Whittingham and Nick Saban.

You need to be top ten in transfer rankings, ain’t that obvious?

  11. USC is never going to be the truly dominant team unless recruiting success is changed. Riley and staff completely whiffed on multiple fronts. They didnt pick up even ONE top player in the trenches. Not one. How is that possible? There are open spots on the offensive line and defensive line they could sell the opportunity to play right away. The QB is highly mobile and will cover up for any failures of the o-line. And next year could be a CFP bid opportunity.

At the end of the day, whether it is a pathetic NIL program (due to the control-freak Bohn), or a pathetic recruiting staff, this team will never be a CFP winner unless they address recruiting.

They filled alot of holes and do a good job of identifying talent that is not reflected in the rankings, but seriously, this is just a pathetic recruiting effort and something needs to change if they want to dominate.
