Notes: Four-Star Cornerback Decommits From USC

Four-star cornerback Jett White of Orange High School has decommitted from USC.

Frankly, I never expected him to stick with USC. He committed early, before Lincoln Riley got hired and things always seemed tenuous the past 12 months. Another Donte Williams coup.

  • There is speculation wide receiver CJ Williams will enter the transfer portal. With all the receivers USC has or has coming next season, it wouldn’t be surprising if he left. Whatever happened to wide receiver Gary Bryant? Does he think he will play next season at USC?
  • Remember how some in the media proclaimed Korey Foreman’s interception vs. UCLA to be a turning point for the former five star? He didn’t have a tackle yesterday. That means he had 1 tackle in the three games after the interception.
  • Five-star Domani Jackson was supposedly healthy yesterday but played only six snaps. Cornerback Ceyair Wright did not start yesterday. He started the first 11 games before being benched the final three games.
  • Defensive tackle Brandon Pili just completed his sixth season at USC. But with the COVID season that didn’t count and medical redshirt, could he get a seventh if he wanted one?
  • I didn’t hear the USC radio broadcast but I’m told the spotter was Tim Tessalone. So it was the Sports Information Director who retired but won’t retire.

      1. Did we get an explanation as to why Mario was returning kickoffs…..As you said, the returner needs to find a seam quickly, commit and start heading up-field. Raleek, at times, thinks east/west running is advancing the ball.

He had the one return with the missed facemask and a penalty against us that netted the ball around the 5 yardline…..he went sideways from the moment he caught the ball

      2. Raleek’s talents [which are many] rest outside the universe of kickoff returns….. I remember Pete telling Reggie “look for the seam, make your cut and take off”…… someone needs to tell Raleek that it might look like you’ve got the whole field and plenty of time to dance around or to just head to the nearest sideline and turn on the burners …BUT…neither of those is the right approach to returning a kick….watch the Adoree vs. Notre Dame videos.”

      3. nailed it……even on his off-tackle runs, he tries to keep stringing it out and the pursuit catches up and the result is a loss of yards. That type of running in the NFL lands you on the street

      4. Can’t believe our running backs coach hasn’t gotten him to drop the loosey/goosey highschool running techniques yet…..

      5. Heading to the sidelines and then turning up the field may have worked in high school but not in college. You are correct in finding a seam and then going for it.

      6. Why so mean Mr. Guarino? These are late teens, and early 20’s kids. If you are going to blame anyone, blame the adults. Blame Riley for putting a young man in a place where he could not succeed! Shame on all you so-called fans!

Support the boys! Don’t tear them down! Go Trojans no matter what!

      7. In a sense you’re right. Mario should not have been in that position. But gotta tell ya —I’ve seen early 20’s law students & law clerks get reamed plenty of times. And it never hurts them. In fact, it helps them grow up. Fast.

      8. Gabby,

As I understand it, USC was expecting an onside and sent the hands team on the field. Raleek was moved up in that set up which left Mario as the deep man. Then, Tulane didn’t kick the onside and just decided to kick it deep.

      9. marvienna — Did Mario ever get to practice kickoff returns? Did anyone ever say anything to him about not touching a ball that’s either gonna bounce into the endzone from the 1 yard line …or land outta bounds? Did anyone explain that we’d get the ball on the 25 or the 35 yard line, respectively, in those situations?

    1. Answer:
…cuz he gets word from Riley that Grinch will be collecting all his personal effects & papers in a shoe box and leaving Heritage under guard sometime today or tomorrow…

  1. Wise choice for Jett White, because Lincoln Riley’s offense leaves the defense out to dry. I can’t imagine too many 5 star defensive players wanting to sign with USC. Riley has also proven to be a weak recruiter, unless he’s grabbing players out of the portal, that nobody wanted anyway . USC is definitely Oklahoma West… Seriously! 😂

      1. Michael, I’m a Trojan, and I don’t disagree with what “Kirk” is saying. I’ve received a lot of e-mails from several OU friends crowing “we told you so”, and “I tried to warn you, what did you expect?”, etc. Riley needs to have some serious introspection and make a huge change, and if he has the courage and temerity to do that, he can be very successful here.

  2. It will be interesting to see if Riley has the balls to can Grinch or will Bohn make him do it ? Maybe nothing happens to Grinch ? Frankly, any head coach that needs and inside receivers coach and an outside receivers coach maybe isn’t going to care what happens on defense or special teams, but he might want to can on WR coach and hire a ST coach, just saying.

    1. The fact that hiring Jim Leonhard from Wisconsin would make Trojan fans completely forget the loss to Tulane in 2 seconds is reason enough for Riley to offer half his own salary to get him……

  3. CJ Williams is really talented and should be playing more. They should be getting him touches to develop him and keep him motivated.

Despite all the turnover of the roster last year, they still have a whole lot of Helton failure left on the roster and added a bunch of failure from other programs on the defensive side of the ball. Any DC is going to have problems until they get things sorted in the roster on the defensive side of the ball.

      1. …his players are reaching out rather than tackling….that only happens when you’re unmotivated….. and that falls on Grinch…..
I don’t know how many words come outta Grinch’s mouth in a minute [I’m guessing millions] but all the words in the world can’t change the fact his defense sucked in every game except the Notre Dame game….and played it’s worst games in championship settings at the end of the year.

      2. Found this little gumball…

” Many teams have shifted to the rugby tackling technique, thanks in part to the video put out by Carroll and the Seahawks teaching the finer points of the “Hawk tackle,” as they call it.

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer was not initially interested in changing the Buckeyes’ approach, but former defensive coordinator (and current Rutgers head coach) Chris Ash persisted. Meyer soon became a believer, too.

“I did as much research as I could and ultimately we jumped in,” Meyer said last year, via Jon Solomon of CBS Sports. “Tremendous success right out of the get-go. You could see the difference.”

      3. Gabby — the Hawk Tackle involves TWO elements — Wrap AND Roll.
After you’ve wrapped your arms around the runner’s waist YOU have to roll your own body to bring him down. ALL season our guys wrapped WITHOUT rolling —in fact, dumbass Grinch even talks about being sure to “wrap” the runner up. It doesn’t work that way. The runner will not come down unless the tackler rolls after the wrap.

      4. …ask yourself how many times you’ve seen one of our linebackers or safeties roll to the ground [bringing the runner with him] after wrapping the runner up…..

  4. I have to laugh at the thought that players get even with coaches not catering to the players whims and playing time expectations. So far the best former Trojans have been able to do is go lower on the radar of Pro scouts. Ask Daniels what his fourth transfer will bring

  5. Usc with millions of dollars to throw around and you lose to Tulane? Tulane was 2-10 last year! Tcu was 5-7 last year! Excellent seasons. They had good years not usc.

    1. 100%!
For Your Information: Tulane was picked to finish EIGHTH in the ACC —behind Cincinnati, UCF, Houston, East Carolina, Memphis, SMU and Tulsa.
      We got outcoached. Badly.

      1. The Tulane coach that outcoached Clown U’s coach isn’t making $10 million a year. The bozos thought they bought a 8 cyl., MBZ but actually, it turned out to be a 7 cyl., ’58 Hudson.

  6. He didn’t, DTR did. Just like the rest of the SUCC rah-rah, LR was holding his breathe until DTR chucked the last minute INT.

  7. Facts matter? Lost to Arizona. Facts matter? lost in the Tony the Tiger Bowl. Facts matter? New quarterback for UCLA and no defensive coordinator. USC may not be better than Tulsa. . .but it sure beats UCLA.

Jimmy Lake could be an interesting candidate if Alex Grinch falls on his sword. He’s not getting the best out of the players or finding the right schematic fit that they can use as a base.

  8. Grinch sucks at SC just like he did at OU. You guys can have him. We are so better of without him and Muleshoe. Our season was bad this year but BV is a winner and OU is better of with him than LR. You will never go to the playoffs with either of those two coaches because the choke….Over and Over..You might win a conference championship but never a Natty. Besides LR is looking towards the NFL. Good Luck

  9. LR is gonna fire Grinch. Then he’ll score a coup with a big-time DC. Once that happens, the three of them LR, CW, and the the new DC. will go on a recruiting rampage. Southern Cal is going to the NC this next year. You all forget we are SC– Championships, Tradition, Hollywood, and the baddest Alumni Association in the nation ! Oh, how bout those fans 90,000 strong. Why not play for SC.
