USC Morning Buzz: An Observation On Colorado Proves Valid

A few days ago, I wrote, “a Pac-12 coach told me one of the spring impressions of Colorado is the Buffaloes look physically small.”

This is a picture of the Colorado spring game.

In all seriousness, here’s an observation from the spring game that backs up what I wrote. I suspect Deion Sanders will still be bringing a lot of players in through the portal.

  1. P.S. The “physically small” guy is a running back who just might have electrifying speed and whose size might work for him as he slithers by unsuspecting linesmen

      1. George, my dear buddy, you know that I’m above such things as being attracted to mere physical beauty—the things that attract me are the desire to protect the environment and those suffering in other countries —this bring me pleasure and fulfil….. oh, ha ha , fuck, I can’t do it… how can the dems keep a straight face talking this way year in and year out?
        P. S.
To paraphrase Wyatt Earp to Doc Holiday, “Thanks for always being there, George!

    1. I never gave “Chunk” Kelly a second thought, Ms. EdG
but my best guess would be 100 Kilos or 220-pounds,
or are you talking about his Entire body weight?

      1. Must’ve been about 45 yrs and listening to Dodger Talk when they were on KABC 790. Trivia question to win Dodgers tickets was “who did Eddie Gaedel pinch it for?” I remember from reading Strange But True Baseball Stories that Frank Saucier was the answer. I was on hold, next caller up when the gentlemen on the line answered the question. 14yrs old & crushed 😉

    1. Yeah, that ‘Love Potion Number-9″ has taken on new street names, George

And by the way, I looked up No. 10 in the picture above and he is Jaylen Jackson,
a senior who is listed at 5’10”, 175 lbs., so either the picture has an illusory angle
or the Buffs are bluffing on the truth

      1. Has the picture been photoshopped, 67? Like the slightly purple-skinned ones Scott runs of Helton [which I never get tired of]?

      2. Michael, good call. Even the helmet looks way too big on the RB. Now that you mention it, I am thinking that Scottie must have morphed in an image of a kid from peewee football.

I want Scott to go the extra mile —photoshop a player who’s smaller than a peanut….so small he’s invisible to the naked eye….

  3. Scott would never resort to such tactics, that is 20,000 leagues beneath him,
and to suggest such is Benedict Arnold-like, but do you really think Wolf did that?

      1. …while Coach Sanders was shooting his mouth off [& one of his “unbelievable” players was being penalized] it occurred to me how fast his “aren’t I cool?” shtick is gonna get old ……

  4. I read on another site that the Pac-12 is offering 90 million for 10 years of broadcast rights or 9 million per year and not budging higher. If true and there are no better offers, the Pac-12 is doomed.

Seems like whatever the number is, those Pac-12 schools might be screwed.

  5. I don’t know how good a coach Sanders will be at this level but if he turns out to be a bust there will be a lot of angry fans because of the way the media has hyped this guy up.

  6. You think Colorado will be mad at Coach Prime after a 1 and 11 season? Really? All he has to do is be better than Karl Dorrell. How hard is that?

    Bear Alexander is a Trojan.

  8. Stop Scott. Just do your work– in the week before 4 DL transferred, all above 300lb and all 6’3 or above. They had only 4 DL. Those guys are pretty big, Shane Cooks is 6’3 280, Jalen Sami is 6’6 330, Mason Maddox 6’3 290, Leonard Payne 6’3 310.

And the LBs, LaVonta Bently from Clemson and Demouy Kennedy from Alabama, Myles Slusher from Arkansas are all big dudes for their positions- I can’t recall which were there. Their other starting LBs are all in the 6’3, 6’4 230-250. Travis Hunter is obviously rangy (they just lost their other starting corner). There other CBs are typical 6′ 180lb guys, but everyone figures they’re placeholders for the 5* Cormani McClain.

(Where CU is small is that most of their offensive starter skill players (WR/RB) are small speedsters (4.45 electronic time guys), even if they play behind a long and heavy OL and heavy TE/FBs. IMO Coach Sanders and staff may be underestimating the speed in the PAC 12, and don’t realize that the PAC 12 are used to no huddle up-tempo offenses, though altitude may give them a little edge.)

They may have more size coming on their DL but losing 4 or 5 3* DL is a HUGE blow and will set them back. There aren’t that many DL out there, especially if your program doesn’t have serious NIL money. If Sanders can’t get equal or upgraded inside d-line talent we’ll be talking about his hubris, and it will be a long year for Colorado.

(In some of this free agency transferring across the board, coaches are forgetting that in college, the longer a group of kids play together in units and systems the better they perform, they are not plug-and-play professionals.)

Putting CU’s size in perspective, our staff pushed Korey Foreman to go down to 235lbs (!) and play DL (and wonder why he disappears and gets swallowed up), and turn the rest of the DL into high school size, then seeing it not work, we brought in a couple of 300lb Bear Alexander. But they told Foreman to drop to 235 when he was already down to 245 but kept him at DL. SC then brought in 6’6 270lb Anthony Lucas, 6’2, 290lb Kyon Barrs to try to find bulk and guys that were coached up elsewhere. It’s hard to tell what Alex Grinch and LR are thinking re the defense, it’s kinda like they are trying to run after every trend, even opposing ones, and USC gives the money and power to do so. At some point they have to hit on the right thing.
