USC Morning Buzz: The Media Can’t Even Agree On Pac-12 Deal

The story of the two USC students who allegedly stole football jerseys at the NFL Draft took a higher profile after I wrote about it Wednesday. KCAL-TV (Channel 9) did a story on its newscast and web site.

Annenberg Media finally acknowledged the situation and obtained a comment from USC: “While limited by student privacy laws in what we can share, we are cooperating with the authorities in this matter and will follow our internal processes with respect to any allegations of misconduct.”

As I reported yesterday, the Journalism School paid for the trip, which is going to be a source of embarrassment for them. For some reason, they paid for five (FIVE!) students to go to Kansas City for the draft. I’ve heard plenty of people at Annenberg are unhappy over that decision.

Eric Lambkins and Jude Ocanas, who were charged with second-degree burglary, stealing and first-degree trespassing charges, were released after each posted $2,500 bail and are back at USC for final exams.

Once the legal matters are settled, it’s going to be interesting to see how USC handles the case. The students had official media credentials obtained via a USC media organization. That’s not a good look for USC.

Also: The university has revamped its student-conduct process in the past year, which will make this even more scrutinized, to see how differently it handles an offense that was in the public spotlight.

      1. I really wish that both parties would dump their presumed candidates and find someone with integrity. The activities of the Biden family, mainly Hunter but also Joe, are extremely troubling. Selling access to political figures with the potential to influence their decisions is the core of what is rotten in Washington. Unfortunately this type of influence-peddling is so common in DC that noone cares about it.

        But the real issue here is the news media, which refuses to cover legitimate stories and really has become a corporate/intelligence agency propaganda machine.Good to see Fox News getting hammered for firing Tucker. I see that Fox is trying to discredit Tucker for saying, “white men dont fight that way”. Really? is that the best they can do?

        So if I say white men cant jump, is that considered racism?

        The question you have to ask is why, when all other actions against all other cable news organizations are being thrown out on First Amendment grounds, Fox didn’t make a simple pretrial motion to dismiss. They had nothing to lose. This settlement smells funny. Betcha there’s a side agreement that Fox will only have to pay a couple of installments of the settlement….and rest will be forgotten…..
        Why don’t you check the docket next year to see how much has ACTUALLY been turned over…..

        Sorry for the delayed reply [ever since So Cal brought up great Chocolate milk brands me and the Little Woman have been hunting around Maui to get me some]….
        May I give you a little litigation lesson? I may, oh thank you! Judge Davis occupies the lowest rung of the judicial ladder — he’s a fucking trial judge. His expertise is limited to sustaining and overruling objections. If Fox wanted the First Amendment issues reviewed by more serious legal minds they could easily have filed a Writ requesting the Court of Appeals to overturn the dismissal of their motion and direct the lowly trial judge to give more serious consideration to the multiple First Amendment issues he sluffed off. Or…Fox could go to trial and appeal the judge’s jury instructions on First Amendment grounds if they lost.
        It’s positively weird Fox didn’t fight back more if a billion dollar settlement was the alternative. But maybe the much publicized $$ sum here is ALL Dominion wanted and needed.
        I’m only guessing but I have a feeling Fox isn’t gonna wind up paying Dominion anywhere near the sum reported. If you want you could check the docket next year and see how many installments have been paid. I bet the answer will be: None.
        As for Dominion —I don’t want them sued —I just wish a court had heard evidence on one of the many cases alleging computerized vote tampering. I would’ve liked to see how strong those claims were —and that can only happen in an adversarial hearing —not by way of trial judges dismissing cases for staleness or lack of standing —which is what happened.

      25. Thanks for the explanation. It’s really puzzling why Fox’s Lawyers didn’t use all resources available to them. Perhaps more details will emerge regarding the settlement and its actual payout amount. Also, I had no idea settlement payments were public information through the court’s docket system

Gabby –When I was running for City Attorney of Los Angeles I went over to Superior Court Records in the Criminal Courts Building to see if any of the politicians ordered to pay big fines for violation of campaign laws really paid up —guess what? —they hadn’t. Not one of them made more than an initial token payment. I think the deal struck was “you agree to big fine, we agree not to collect.”

  8. What a great sports blog. I never would have known about the theft of unguarded jerseys or the lousy TV deals for a dying league without this post. I got up this morning wondering how USC baseball was doing and hoping to hear something about the final decision made by players offered in the portal. Thank goodness I finally got an ambiguous report on the media deal and jersey thieves. I would suggest a retitle of the blog to “InsdeUSCschool of Journalism.com”but I think we all know what people would say about its owner.
