USC Morning Buzz: Is Anyone In Charge Here?

So who runs the USC athletic dept. right now?

There are no fewer than 7 administrators with the title “Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director.” No wonder Mike Bohn didn’t need to show up.

Before it would have been easy to guess who would step into the void when Mini-Me (Sosna) was Coach Bohn’s sidekick. That’s no longer the case. They don’t even have Tim Tessalone around any more to pretend everything is fine.

I suppose it is Nick Bowes, who also holds the title of Chief Operating Officer and (crucially until last Friday) came to USC from the University of Cincinnati. His wife is also an administrator, which adds to his power. But he’s made some unpopular decisions so I’m not sure how eager the rank-and-file are going to be under him.

I’m sure USC president Carol Folt thinks the athletic dept. can just run itself on an interim basis until she hires someone. I’ve heard Folt would like someone in place around the start of the fall semester.

As for football, which is what 99.9 percent of the readers care about, Lincoln Riley will run it, so no worries there. And if anything controversial happens in athletics, you can bet Heritage Hall will simply call the Bovard Administration building and kick the problem upstairs, as Steve Sarkisian used to say.

Morale is a problem, however. Lynn Swann was incompetent and never around. Bohn could disappear too. So some of the troops are tired of not having engaged leadership. Are you listening, President Folt?

  • The No. 9-ranked USC women’s golf team upset No. 1-ranked Stanford, 3-1, in match play Tuesday to advance to the NCAA championship match vs. No. 2-ranked Wake Forest.

The championship match begins today at 1:35 p.m. PT with the Golf Channel joining the match at 2 p.m. USC coach Justin Silverstein and Wake Forest assistant coach Ryan Potter are best friends so the teams will be familiar to each other.

    1. Papadakis knows nothing more than has been reported save it must have been something more than an unwanted shoulder massage that moved Bohn out. He did note Folt’s commitment to integrity by her named outside PR firm vetting Bohn and this blowing up in her face.

      4. Trump once predicted that Durham would uncover the “crime of the century”, the investigation proved to be defective in court. Two people he charged were acquitted in court, and only the former FBI lawyer who altered an email to help prepare a wiretap application pleaded guilty.

The Durham report ended without recommending any wholesale changes at the FBI. And came at the expense of 10 million dollar to the taxpayers for a 300 page paper-weight!

    4. There is a shit ton of worthless people in the USC athletic dept. you should see some of the job titles they’ve made up and given themselves. I guarantee you about 2/3’s of those lazy grifters do nothing but show up late, play candy crush on the computer, have a 2 hour lunch and leave for home an hour early everyday.

Their job security grift they’ve had going on the psst two decades, they don’t want anyone messing with their program, they have it too good.

Talk about a waste of money…goddamn!

  2. ATH: Riley will not be able to build a national championship program without comparable operations to the ones at not just Georgia and Alabama, but Oregon, which has the best-funded, most organized collective on the West Coast. The next AD needs to be fully aware and accepting of the new landscape, which Bohn clearly was not.

One of my first calls would be to Washington AD Jennifer Cohen, one of the most respected names in the profession. She would obviously bring West Coast familiarity. If it’s more important to have someone with Big Ten or SEC experience, there’s Washington State’s Pat Chun, who spent 15 years at Ohio State; Texas A&M’s Ross Bjork, who spent five years at UCLA; or Pitt’s Heather Lyke, who spent 15 years at Ohio State.

My question is, who will make the hire? Why would USC trust president Carol Folt to hire his replacement when she apparently failed to fully vet Bohn?

    1. Riley won’t win a NC if he doesn’t get a DC that doesn’t have his head up his ass as well as Riley taking the defensive side of the game seriously as well.

Chun is the name to hire here, Big Ten experience at a big time school, the broad at UDUB is OK but kind of a goof, no to anyone with ucla ties and no to anyone from Pitt, I still have Hackett flashbacks.

    2. Men’s golf has never won a NC in golf, which is really pathetic given the location and all the talent in the area.

Women’s golf dominated a few years back and then the head coach went to Texas Tech, I think, for more money, typical USC.

The biggest match yesterday, not reported by the blogger, was Brianna Navarrosa beating two time defending NCAA champion Rose Zhang.

Zhang, the top-ranked amateur in the world who Tuesday was named the winner of the 2023 ANNIKA Award, given to the best women’s college golfer, hit her approach shot at the par-3 16th hole at Grayhawk Golf Club inside 3 feet. Navarrosa had yet to hit her tee shot, but she wasn’t fazed.

Her ball landed about 8 feet away. And when she was lining up her putt, she knew its importance.

“I usually don’t say things like you have to make it or you have to get a birdie,” Navarrosa said, “but I knew I had to make a birdie. Standing over that putt, I don’t think I felt more confident than I have in my golf career.”

She buried the putt in the center, and with a 2 up lead with two holes to play, the putt was arguably the most important in the match.

The Southern California junior kept her composure, as she had all day, confidently stroked her longer putt and watched it drop before Rose Zhang had a chance to make her birdie.

“I didn’t know how important it would be, especially going into 17, but I knew I had to make it,” Navarrosa said. “Standing over it, I was like, this is going in the hole.”

  4. 99.9 % of the people reading this only care about USC football? Thank you for clarifying this. That makes the other .01 % Owns?
I really care about a lot of things, but when I want to read about USC I care about football. I mean what person in their right mind would come here to read about their Gen. Ed classes or the toilet overflowing somewhere on campus? And who besides Owns reads this collection of bilge to find fault with the school?
Inside USC is about football, and occasionally the broken handle in the janitor’s closet so as to look as if it were really inside USC. Where else can I learn that there are more Athletic Administrators, than cashiers at a mega Walmart? (and if one goes on break, none are left)
Is a dead horse worth being flogged? Are unpopular decisions always bad? Finally it’s that .01% which makes us whole, so don’t criticize it.

    1. Damn Ghost, OUCH! But I can’t help it that Clown U, the Methodist dump, is a dead horse.

There are a boat load of SUCC, bona fide halfwits and senile dipsomaniacs that post on Wolf’s blog. For example, there’s ’67, PT, TW, Rushmore, So Cal, Commie Lush, and Dear Pissley.

The one thing in common those twits have is they can respond to me after I flog their pathetic Methodist college or object to some loud, ignorant, bozo BS boast, lacking the merest shred of truth or common sense.

I don’t, as a rule, ever make fun of dead SUCC hero’s; I rarely ever mention OJ or Marinovich, or Osa Messina or St. Patsy. I wish I could say the same for Commie Lush. His mean spirited Coach Wooden/Nell schtick constitutes actually beating dead humans with a stick. But of course Ghost that’s ok with you, ’cause he be a hip Clownster; like Reggie Bush.

If you don’t like my posts Ghost, that’s ok; ignore them. But please be consistent. Why not point out some of your bozo, cretin buddies, moronic BS they regularly whine ad infinitum, like on a hourly basis, that smack and smell exactly like your hardy accusations regarding my posts.

The only reason Ucla is going to the Big 10 is because USC needs to ask someone who the other teams in the league are.
USC people will whine all season about the officials, you can take that to the bank.
And as I have said numerous times if one of my students is offered a place at Ucla I will always tell them it’s a great school.

Suck on some Viagra or Cialis and bring better material. What’s comedy is the need to bring up Hilary as if she’s relevant. You guys obsess over women in politics as if it matters. Trust me, it doesn’t. The AD has to be very good at bringing in money and competent appearing about their job. Bohn failed that last part and the names mentioned by Charles should give you an idea of who the alleged search firm will research until you realize that the money matters most. With that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Folt tries to slide in somebody from the corporate world who she won’t feel threatened by.
