USC Baseball Gets Snubbed By NCAA Tournament

USC was considered a safe bet for the NCAA Tournament by the “experts” but was shocked this morning to learn it did not make the postseason.

In fact, it wasn’t even that close because USC was not one of the last four teams out according to the NCAA. Arizona State, Kansas State, Kent State and UC Irvine were the last four.

Apparently, where you finished in the conference didn’t matter as Arizona made the tournament over the Trojans. USC (34-23-1, 17-13) was fourth in the Pac-12 while Arizona (33-24, 12-18) was eighth. The difference was RPI: Arizona was No. 45; USC was No. 53.

USC was also behind Arizona State in the NCAA’s thinking even though it finished one spot ahead of the Sun Devils in the Pac-12. But ASU was one spot ahead in RPI.

RPI is king, which highlights a larger conversation among baseball gurus that the NCAA punishes West Coast teams because it is more difficult to find tough teams to play unless you constantly traveled to the South or Midwest, which is too costly for most schools.

Even John Cohen, chair of the NCAA Baseball Selection Committee, admitted solely using RPI is a flawed system.

It’s a tough break for the USC players and Coach Andy Stankiewicz, especially when you consider the Trojans were picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12 preseason coaches’ poll.

If you are a conspiracy theorist, you can say USC was punished by its move to the Big Ten. Utah A.D. Mark Harlan is on the NCAA Baseball Division I Committee.

  2. Definitely got railroaded this time. Conspiracy theory mentioned in
    another post had Stanford beat Oregon blowing a 7 – 3 lead late,
    USC makes the semi- finals which could have given them one more good win. What about the Trojans tradition of all those NCAA titles
    which helped the ‘Ruins in basketball make some tournaments?

Losing a baseball game is not the same as losing a basketball or football game….UCONN played 37 games total winning the title…the Georgia Bulldogs played 15 games total winning their national title…..the Trojans played 58 games not winning a title or making the tourney, but their number of games games played far out distances basketball and football…so, there’s that….good teams stumble more often in baseball, many times because the grind is different…they’ve had a good year…..hope they get over the disappointment and move on…even had a player lead the nation in triples…that’s a great sign….

    1. There is only one Power 5 program as an independent – ‘the princess’ and 3 more in the lower FBS (MA, CT & Army) Pressure moving CT and MA to Mid-American.

      I’m just happy USC has never played a lower division football program – the last one standing to decline such.

      He avoided serving by receiving 5 deferments by cheating his way through college and law school where he was finally caught cheating but was inexplicably not expelled.

      While Biden did indeed receive five draft deferments, these were due to his status as a student. Later, when he underwent a physical exam, he was classified unable to serve owing to his mysterious newly mentioned history of asthma that somehow didn’t affect his being a lifeguard and playing football.

      Somehow, Iraq War veteran Sen. Tammy Duckworth didn’t call him “ Cadet FakeAsthma ” or “Cadet Cheater”.

It sucks to pay the “not in baseball too” price from idiot AD’s who want to deny the benefit of branding to enlarge the audience. So let USC get stronger and start to pull more national recruits for baseball. Maybe Robinson will be available to make a difference next time? One can only hope.
