USC Morning Buzz: Have Recruiting Rankings Jumped The Shark?

I’m getting pretty tired of recruiting rankings. Again.

USC received a commitment Monday from offensive lineman Manasse Itete of Modesto. He is the No. 12-ranked offensive tackle in the nation by 247 and a four-star prospect. But he is only a three-star prospect by Rivals.

There’s nothing wrong with a difference of opinion. However, this is quite a discrepancy.

I applaud Rivals to a certain degree because too often it seems like everyone gets four-stars on 247. Note the bold words for the segment of readers who will ignore that part.

And I’d rather have a recruiting service show more discretion.

Look at USC’s 2021 recruiting class: The 247 four-stars included linebacker Raesjon Davis, cornerback Ceyair Wright, linebacker Julien Simon, wide receiver Kyron Ware-Hudson, cornerback Prophet Brown, defensive lineman Jay Toia, defensive back Anthony Beavers, safety Xamarion Gordon and defensive back Jaylin Smith.

Some of these players have already been busts and some appear to be busts though it’s still early in their careers. But four stars for all!

Don’t you think at this point, some of those players would be considered three stars today? The fact is that most fans never go back and check this stuff, so there’s no fear factor that if you give too many stars anyone will really notice. And it gets fans more excited if you tell them their school landed another four star, especially on Twitter.

But 247 does not overrank all players. I randomly looked up tailback Travis Dye for fun and 247 had him as just a three star. How many four-stars did he outperform?

  5. I think it matters more that USC can compete for some of the top 100 players than whether they get players that are lower 4 star versus 3 star.

    I think during the Helton era, it was far more important to just get guys with 4 stars so it would look OK because he didnt get alot of the really talented players.

    In the 2023 recruiting class USC picked up some 3 star players that were definitely underrated. I think Elijah Hughes, Tobias Raymond and Kade Eldridge are all underrated due to playing in less competitive schools and will have lots of upside potential once they get into a college conditioning program. Sam Greene and Micah Banuelos might also be really good 3 star prospects.

Agreed…..just before they sacked ‘the winner of the William Bendix look-alike-contest’ a parent of one of the players said the cratering that the grinning clown both inherited and added his seasonings made USC was far deeper than anyone knew. That it was going to take time, talent and mgmt. to bring it back to what it was when PC was there.

      Better to realize what is needed before USC moves to the Big 10 then have the situation that OK is facing with Brent Venables as their HC and his ‘drama’ moving to the SEC.

  6. So the Belgian crowd gave a courteous applause to their team even though they lost. I believe the Japanese are that way also. Showing appreciation for the effort, win or lose.– Something you would never see from an American crowd where winning is everything and losing is not to be tolerated

    3. I have cheered USC during a loss, if the crowd (myself included) thought the game was well played and both teams were evenly matched. Losing is part of the game.
      I have also booed the team when they played like unprepared middle schoolers (mostly during the Helton epoch)
      Growing up I thought booing was wrong, but Paton, “I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed” and Helton (who earned the boos, changed that.

  11. Again, with the American exceptionalism. We played a big part but lots of people were screaming “let Europe settle their own affairs and keep our boys away” just like today. Context, Wolf. That football club was just recently promoted and made it to champions league which means a super big payday for them and a chance to roll with the big timers. Just like recruiting. People have left the program and bloomed (Velus Jones) because they received better coaching. You should cry about who’s going to miss out on playing time or did Scott get tired of his own ranting?

  12. I don’t care if I get banned. Wolf, it’s an aggregate poll for 247 sports. They take a composite and shoot out a ranking. Dude was unknown two years ago and started popping up on radar. USC coaches noticed him last year and said outperform some higher ranked dudes and we’ll offer. Guess what that kid did? He embarrassed some people OUTSIDE OF RIVALS CAMPS WHICH NEVER BROUGHT OUR OFFERED HIM AM INVITE to get some offers from major schools. Whining about recruiting politics is almost as bad as Beltway bawling. What’s next? Megan and Harry updates?
