The Friday USC Column Supplement

It’s still perplexing how players did things in the 1970’s that are rarely happening today despite all the passing that takes place.

Safety Charles Phillips had three interceptions in USC’s 55-24 victory over Notre Dame in 1974.

And Dennis Thurman intercepted passes in seven straight games. If either of those things happened today, where would Pro Football Focus rank the players?

  • USC receiver Tom Nickoloff gets behind Minnesota defensive back Paul Giel in the Trojans’ 17-7 victory in 1953.
  • The 1978-79 USC basketball team had four returning starters: Cliff Robinson, Don Carfino, Steve Smith and Purvis Miller.
  • USC safety Mark Carrier is on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.
  • Since I wrote about the student riot a couple days after the 1964 USC-Notre Dame game, the top photo is a nice, color photo from the game.

  4. Robinson and Miller, that was a very good SC team, but again, sucla had a bit more talent as usual, and superior talent usually rules the day (or ask sucla football how that works)

    Apparently Scott did not get the Poster’s memo from yesterday as to why there are fewer interceptions (percentage-wise) than in the 1970s– quarterbacks are more seasoned and trained

When a US president and his vice president are briefed by the head of the FBI about their party’s presidential nominee looking to frame her opponent for treason and their response is not “hey we should stop her” but is instead “we will support her frame job with the full force of government,” then at that point the die is cast. There is no turning back, you must both destroy the other guy and make sure that your party stays in power perpetually, so there is never a reckoning for your actions.

  10. Wolf doesn’t seem to get the concept that football passes were poorly thrown compared to today. If you look at completion rates and the changes to pass interference as well as other rule changes such as the five yard one bump zone, passing was much harder pre 1980.

    Why Wolf, why? Have you succumbed to QAnon as well? Or maybe watching too many old films and dreaming of AOC?
