USC Saturday Buzz: Big Recruits Visiting This Weekend

USC is only hosting two recruits this weekend but they are big targets: Five-star St. John Bosco cornerback Peyton Woodyard, who is committed to Georgia and teammate, four-star linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who is also looking at Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Will USC get Woodyard to flip? They think they can.

  • The IRS said that non-profit NIL collectives offering tax deductions could be illegal, which could affect USC.

In a memo Friday, the IRS chief counsel says donations made to 501(c)(3) collectives “are not tax exempt” because their benefits are not incidental to exempt purposes.

It’s significant because a lot of boosters believe their donations are tax deductible.

  1. You gotta believe this staff and team are only going to rise to the top….I attended the Tulane game and found it to be a great experience, nonetheless….true, I missed the debacle at the end because I was pleasantly distracted and couldn’t believe the horrifying end, which I fortunately missed. But, they’re gonna be number 1 one day…look forward to it….

I suspect that all these kids need to hire a good CPA, pay their estinated taxes quarterly and file taxes annually.

Hope they invest their money and not waste it away. They actually could be set for life if they invest properly.

  3. Uh, is it the tax exempt status of the recipient or the tax exempt status of the corporate and individual donors that is being called into question? If I work for a non-profit I still have to pay taxes. Finding a financing mechanism for semi-pro college football players is still problematic even though the state legislature is now going to allow revenue sharing by the athletes. Gosh, I wish my employer was forced to give me free stock shares too. So, are university sports teams now an employee (athlete)-owned enterprise by declaration of the state? If there is no pot of money at the end of the rainbow for the institutions then why do it?

    1. Wayne:

“. . . are university sports teams now an employee (athlete)-owned enterprise by declaration of the state?”

I believe there is presently an action with the NLRB to have college athletes deemed employees of the university. If successful, they would be entitled to wages, health care, and other benefits in addition to their scholarship benefits. I think this may be a good development in the long run because it would give the universities a mechanism to develop universal rules for athletes and to enforce the rules. We don’t have that today. The NCAA presently has no enforcement mechanism.

    2. Owns:

There is a relatively new Supreme Court case entitled NCAA vs. Alston that held that the NCAA was not exempt from anti-trust laws. In the concurring opinion, Justice Kavanaugh ripped into the NCAA for not allowing college athletes to be paid.

“Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate, and under ordinary principles of antitrust law, it is not evident why college sports should be any different.”

Since the court held that the NCAA could not restrict players from being paid, it follows that the NCAA can not enforce its illegal rules with sanctions.

  5. Viliamu Asa from Bosco supposed to be a real stud linebacker. Hope we land the guy and Woodyard. Got Curtis last year but had to go to Louisiana to grab him. The program has momentum especially on offense . We should be landing both Woodyard and Asa. If we don’t, it is a reflection on the defensive coaches and their perceived failure to develop talent. Another reason to clean house on the defensive side of the ball unless there is significant improvement. We can’t keep losing local defensive recruits.

  7. I don’t get the obsession with discussing bad people on this blog. They’re both (last two POTUS) bad and deserve more than what Putin would give them both. I think getting Woodyard on campus is very impressive. It won’t matter but it shows how well this staff can recruit.

I also want to point out that Attorney Jeff Clark once advocated for the federal seizure of all electoral college ballots by martial law. Something that has never occurred in the United States history.
