I spoke to a university administrator who has an office at the Bovard Administration Building (like Carol Folt) about the USC president’s strong support for a new soccer stadium.
“There are some issues that you can say are pet projects or things important to her,” the administrator said. “One is sustainability issues. Another is Title IX.
“You can really see examples of both on campus. She is eliminating the use of single-use plastics on campus.”
As for Title IX, she paid Lindsay Gottlieb $1 million a year to coach women’s basketball; renamed Cromwell Field as Allyson Felix Field and now has supported the 2,500-seat soccer stadium that will also house women’s lacrosse.
It’s too bad Folt has also greenlit the transformation of the Student Union building, kicking out the ticket office and booting the Daily Trojan from its historic newsroom to a space 40 percent smaller in favor of student cultural spaces that could be placed in other places on campus.

Really the worst possible president for a major university. I would imagine that every year under Folt will result in a decline in the rankings of USC as an institution.
The decisions around athletics should be based on how it serves the best interests of the university. Mens college football generates revenues, increases fundraising, is a rallying point for enthusiasm around the school and builds the USC brand. Womens soccer wont ever fill up that stadium. Womens basketball wont ever make a dime.
Maybe Folt needs to take an economics course, although the teachers at USC are probably peddling that MMT crap now.

It’s the petty acts like punishing the Daily Trojan because they want to act like journalists instead of a publicity arm. Or coming down hard on male administrators and looking the other way at others indiscretions (Varsity Blues anyone?) or the silence with the scandal about Mark Ridley Thomas or the stupid cheerleading over Title IX but the complete failure to bring down the cost of tuition by doing a better job of fundraising.
There’s a lot that I can go on and on about. I don’t want to call her a media whore but geez, the need for proclamations and cameras being present are concerning.
