USC Morning Buzz: A Little Shake-Up On Defense

A little bit of news to start the week.

I’m hearing USC cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace is being moved to nickel back. That would be bad news for whoever played nickel back previously and maybe that is a reason why Latrell McCutchin entered the transfer portal last week.

Now why would USC move Roland-Wallace, a proven starter at corner for Arizona, to nickel back? Because the coaches (Alex Grinch) clearly feel they have enough cornerbacks without Roland-Wallace. Right now, that means Ceyair Wright, Domani Jackson and Jacobe Covington.

I think that is a real roll of the dice and I am dubious but we shall see. The bottom line is whether Roland-Wallace is a nickel or corner, there are issues in the secondary.

  • Remember Tyler Ebell, the former UCLA tailback, who was also heavily recruited by USC?

The Ventura County Star has quite a story on Ebell, a sheriff for Ventura County, who an internal affairs investigation “concluded . . . pursued a romantic relationship with (an inmate) while she was in jail and carried on a sexual affair with her after she was released.”

The inmate, Nastaza Schmidt, filed a federal lawsuit against Ventura County and Ebell. In the lawsuit, she accused Ebell of sexual battery, assault, infliction of emotional distress and violation of her civil rights. She said he coerced her into a relationship by promising to help her with her criminal charges, stalked and harassed her and her then-ex-boyfriend, and pressured her into having an abortion when she became pregnant.

Schmidt died Feb. 28 while fleeing the scene of a crime. Her fiance, who was allegedly threatened by Ebell, was killed Aug. 16 in a motorcycle crash.

Ebell resigned from the Sheriff’s dept. before a final notice of dismissal could be served. The formal charges he faced were dishonesty, failure of good behavior, corrupt use of official authority, inexcusable neglect of duty, acts incompatible with public service and acts inimical to public service.

It’s worth reading the story for a lot more detail.

      3. He was accused of it in the federal civil suit – sexual battery. Interesting that the accuser and her boyfriend are now dead after claiming that a cop raped the girl and threatened the boyfriend. Sounds like it could be a made for TV movie.

  3. “There are issues in the secondary” – really? Isnt it a good thing that they have the depth to want to move him to nickel? That they have enough confidence in the other corners to put a proven corner at nickel?

    I have been saying that I thought Covington is a definite starter. Jackson might also be a definite starter too.

    Maybe moving CRW to nickel is also a test and could be reversed later. They probably know he can flip back to corner with all his experience.

    The nickel position was a weakness last year and it does need to be addressed. I would say that Max Williams is probably the loser here, as nickel was his position and it looks like they are trying to still find a solution. Jaylin might also be a loser in this shift.

  4. The big tight end from Utah absolutely burned USC last year. I don’t think Max Williams was able to cover him because he was too small. Appears that they may be looking for taller, more physical players to play nickel. Why not try a safety, Bullock, at nickel.

      2. Agree with Gametv that we have enough talent in the secondary and if the talent is not developed that is a coaching issue. Zion Branch is a natural safety. Play it in high school and was a high 4 star. Christian Pierce also has loads of potential talent and he is 6’4″. If these two are as good as advertised, you may be able to move Bullock to nickel and slide one of them into Bullock’s position. Domani Jackson also has height and physicality but I think he would resist being moved from cornerback to nickel. Really hope Pierce develops. He could be a Taylor Mayes or Joey Browner type of player.

      1. Steveg49: In his Freshman year, they shifted Bullock from safety to cornerback for a few games and he played well. What makes Bullock special is he has good instincts and coverage skills. I think he can play nickel effectively. I am just suggesting that during certain situations, 3rd and 6 for example, with a big tight end, why not shift Bullock to nickel and bring in Zion Branch or Christian Pierce to replace him at safety. My God McKay shifted Sam Cunningham from tailback to fullback and Sam was a great tailback. The Raiders shifted MVP Marcus Allen from tailback to fullback for Bo Jackson with good results. Why not try it. The defense was lousy. Try something new.

  8. If Scott’s story is accurate. It looks like Riley/Grinch feels this kid is a much-needed contributor. He was the leading tackler for Arizona last season, has good size 6′-1, 205(with spring/summer strength program 215 is in reach) seems to be around the ball making tackles. Let’s hope this kid is an impact player out of the gate.

    1. Arguably Michel Moore of the LAPD is a traitor at least to his officers. He gave up the personal data on his cops to a left wing anti-police group. Now the group knows the identity of his detectives, where they live, ect. Just a matter of time before a cop gets whacked over this inexcusable blunder.

      And Moore seems to do whatever is necessary to appease Socialist Karen Bass, the new mayor. He got a five year extension from her but of course it was conditional. She wants the LAPD standards lowered so more women, Black and Brown people qualify. She doesn’t want white men in the LAPD. Most intriguing, she wants each officer’s background check to include whether the officer candidate is a member of a right wing extremist group. She didn’t define right wing extremist. If she is like China Joe’s FBI, it will include anyone who attends a Catholic mass in the original Latin form or a decal of the American flag on their pick-up truck. If you are a member of a left wing extremist group, say BLM, who Bass supported, or you advocate defunding the police, like Bass and the UTLA, you can be an LAPD officer even if your fat and can’t do a push-up. UTLA World and his fellow teacher’s actually supported Bass over Caruso, contributed to her campaign, and got a 21% non merit based salary increase for doing so. Newsom was also funded by UTLA and used Federal emergency Covid dollars to fund their pensions as a quid pro quo after UTLA refused to work for over a year. Kids suffered but so what. Newsom’s kids go to private school. Dirty politicians, dirty teacher’s unions, compromised police chief – the way of the Democratic party in California.

Bass doesn’t hate white men, clown. She doesn’t even care about LAPD. That’s DA Gascon jurisdiction. The Police Commission rehired the chief police, even after he allowed the exposure of the entire department. He should have been fired on the spot and put friends of mine in jeopardy. It is the single most disgusting betrayal any police chief could have allowed and for the leadership of this city to put up with such incompetence tells you how hideous they are. I know that they better hope that LA doesn’t collapse as San Francisco has or there will be no business or commercial property worth having in the next three years.     1. World: Gascon has no authority over hiring officers. The mayor, Bass, does since she determines whether the chief is retained and has repeatedly stated she wants a “diverse” police force with lower standards if necessary. From Fox news:

      “Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called to remove “obstacles” for new police recruits and pledged to root out officers with ties to “right-wing domestic extremist organizations.”

      Bass is looking to remove “obstacles” for police recruits who fail to initially qualify for training as a means of further diversifying the LAPD, according to a summary of her public safety goals obtained by Fox News Digital – but police union leaders are questioning the move.

      Bass’ summary of goals for police reform includes a list of provisions as well as dates by which the department must report back regarding progress.   14. World: In your first post you said that it was the jurisdiction of Gascon, the DA to hire officers. You now admit that statement is wrong after accusing me of being a liar. Gascon hires prosecutors. Your first post also stated that Bass has nothing to do with the hiring of officers. Again, you are wrong and now admit it. The evidence shows that she made the decision to retain Moore and that decision was contingent on him adapting her LAPD hiring policies which include lowering the standards so more black and brown people qualify . She is even requiring that Moore report to her deputy mayor on his progress in implementing her new standard. So what about my statement was false or a lie? She controls the hiring process because she controls the ability to not retain the police chief and place conditions on his retention.

    Further, Bass is a BLM/defund the police supporter. No dispute about that fact. She believes white people are born with privilege, inherently bias and racist. She supports the idea that the biggest threat to America is white supremacy and the white population needs to go through CRT at an early age. Now she is mandating a reverse discrimination policy on white people where they don’t get hired in favor of black and brown people who only qualify if we lower the standard. It is clear that a person who holds these views has a problem with white people. You don’t tell a whole group of people who you have affection for that they need to be re-educated and excluded from employment. You only do this to people you hate.
