USC Morning Buzz: Pac-12 Stepping On Its Brilliant QB Stories

Can anyone step on their own story better than the Pac-12?

This should be a golden season for the conference with an array of proven, talented quarterbacks: Caleb Williams, Michael Penix, Cameron Rising, Bo Nix, etc.

But all we read about is the failure to land a TV rights deal and now this week the weird way San Diego State is engineering a move from the Mountain West to Pac-12. Based on the clumsy way San Diego State acted, it should fit right in the Pac-12.

The league’s cheerleaders applaud commissioner George Kliavkoff for being a largely silent figure on the TV deal. But it would be nice if he were more proactive on other subjects.

How about sending all those quarterbacks to ESPN headquarters for a day? That would generate a lot of publicity on the football.

Frankly, most of the innovative ideas seem to come right now from Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark. Just saying that will rankle some of the Kliavkoff cheerleaders.

But he’s come up with a single Big 12 Pro Day for football,  men’s and women’s basketball exhibition games at Rucker Park in New York and a possible bowl game in Monterrey, Mexico. Oh, and he already sewed up his TV deal.

Meanwhile, all we hear about is Pac-12 inaction.

  • For the first time, the USC water polo program will have independent head coaches for the men’s and women’s teams and two dedicated coaching staffs. Marko Pintaric will remain the coach of the men’s team and long-time associate coach Casey Moon becomes the women’s team coach.

While this allows for a bigger coaching staff for both teams, it also shows USC hasn’t gotten the same results since Jovan Vavic was fired in 2019. He ran both programs and won 16 NCAA titles.

USC has won just one NCAA title in water polo since he left.

If USC finds splitting the programs to be a progressive idea, will it do the same thing with track and field? Quincy Watts runs both programs.

  1. I’m not surprised that the PAC-12 network is spinning its wheels. That’s all they have accomplished in the past, so why is anyone expecting a different result?
Maybe someone should let them in on the secret that the goal is to get the most people watching their games and to do that, they need maximum exposure and availability. Everything flows from high viewership

      1. Democrat = zero integrity.

Just admit it. Democrats are now the new nexus of racial strife and injustice, forever wars, ridiculous economic theories (MMT), covering up corruption, government regulatory agency capture, shipping middle class jobs overseas to China, media subservience to K Street, intelligence agency interference in domestic politics, Wall Street and private equity schemes to financialize the wealth of Americans into their own pockets and a politicized Justice Department.

Are Repubs much better? No. But Democrats are pulling the country onto a very dark path.

      3. gametv — you’re right on all counts —-the CCP is in Cuba and Brazil, their military is being financed by our pension investments, the war in Ukraine is obviously nothing other than a money laundering [which is obvious every time they complain that the weapons we promised haven’t arrived yet] and the federal court system is afraid to have a hearing on the issue of mail-in ballots without legitimate signature verification [while the state courts just punt, saying whatever the secretary of state wants to do is above judicial review —which it ain’t]. In the meantime, all we get from the media is a thousand different opinions on what the ridiculously vague [and, in the big picture] inconsequential Presidential Records Act means….

      5. I apologize for bringing politics into the board, but everyone once in a while I just cant help to point out the absurd direction we are taking. I grew up a Democrat and actually believe that many of the principles associated with Democrats of the past (regulation of excessive greed, freedom of speech, promoting interests of working class, reduction of foreign military interventions) are among the most important political ideas.

The current Democratic party doesnt represent a single one of those ideas anymore.

I encourage any Democrat to do one thing – broaden your source of information. CNN, The New York Times, Washington Post, MSNBC are not a diverse and unbiased source of information. They are pure propaganda. Any media source that has not really explored why they got the Russian Collusion story so wrong is not an unbiased source of information. If they refuse to cover the Durham report or Hunter Biden bribery scandal, also not a serious media source.

Listen to podcasts that delve into multi-hour long discussions, not soundbites. I like RealClearPolitics for the breadth of articles it links (from liberal to conservative). Maybe even subject yourself to listening to a full podcast interview with RFK jr. It is fascinating, even if you disagree with him.

If you cant even do that, then you are not a serious person and your opinion is a joke.

OK, I will cut out the political posts for a while. USC football is real exciting, cant wait for the season to start.

      6. Steve has done the same thing, GameTV…complained about politics here. Then, so much bs goes on that even he can’t stay silent about it! LOL! That’s why I laugh at the Village Idiot saying so many have complained about it.

I won’t argue that in an ideal world, our posts should be at least 75-80% about USC sports. (Maybe a little less on Fridays.) But thanks to our current administration, we’re FAR from an ideal world. Hopefully, that gets corrected next year and the GOP spends most of their time fixing shit rather than retribution.

      7. I must give you fellas credit for attempting to portray the Democrats as the party of war. Even I never would have considered that.
Sure we were the ones who said we must invade Iraq and that cost us trillions.
Much more importantly, our Iraq catastrophe caused more than five thousand of our great military personel gave their lives for a lie but you boys seem to have washed your hands of that one.

      10. Landowner: Did the democrats support the war in Iraq?

Biden, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry all voted in favor of invading Iraq while in the Senate. All three became nominees to run for President by the democratic party. Difficult to make the case that the democratic party is anti-war on these facts. The guy who consistently called it a mistake that would destabilize the middle east was Donald Trump.

      12. Plow Horse,

You’re spewing bullshit again. In 2002 Trump stated publicly that he supported the invasion of Iraq. He later told you the opposite and you believed it.
Also in 2002 Barrack Obama spoke at an anti war rally and said this:
“Now let me be clear – I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity. He’s a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history. I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of Al Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.”

Are you going to give him any credit for that?

The vote to invade Iraq was 77-23. Among the 77 was every single Republican Senator. Keep trying to portray Democrats as the party of war if you want but it is complete and utter bullshit.

  4. In news I don’t care about, but is somewhat relevant to the original post: The PAC 12 may not have a single player taken in the first round of the NBA draft. The PAC12 has become a nobody in basketball. The article mentions a player (whose name I don’t remember) from Ucla might be the PAC’s only hope. My thought is the PAC is so busy scooping quarterbacks from the portal they have forgotten that basketball isn’t a sport.

  5. George Kliavkoff is a major failure at this point. He failed to keep USC in the fold, failed to get a media deal at the best time and has failed to even solve things like the problems with refereeing in the league. Total and complete failure. Even if he eventually keeps the league together and lands some type of media deal, he has diminished the league at a time when the on-field performance of the league is getting much better.
