Steele ranked USC No. 6 on his list of surprise teams for 2018. USC was 8-5 that season. He also had USC as No. 3 in his “best buy” category, which is teams ready to make a big jump back after a disappointing season. Again, USC was 8-5.

With the new player portal, teams like USC become a “paper tiger” until they actually have to go onto the field and play. There is no way to prognosticate the level of play of the re-stocked SC defense, for example, for 2023. Will the defensive players want to tackle or just try arm tackles again? They didn’t at the end of last year. The lesson learned from last year is: an opposing team with all 3* players can beat a team with a Heisman Trophy winner, some 5*’s, and 4* players. USC has not beaten any team they were not supposed to beat – they lost to Utah twice. And it is not likely they will beat any good team on the road again this year. The mark of a good team is beating another team they are not supposed to beat. USC hasn’t done that.

I think Wayne has a point about not winning a big game if you compare the 2022 season to some other seasons. But we did have some big games. We pushed around Notre Dame, have not done that in a while. And we won a tough game at Oregon State based on our defense getting turnovers. Have not done that in a while. But perhaps the biggest positive is that we went 11-3 and I think we were better than the opposing team in all three losses. We have the talent and coaching on the offense side to win every game. Hopefully, the second year of running Grinch’s defense couple with some big time transfers will get us over the hump. I say we should go no worse than two losses with the potential to get into the CFP. I don’t think we are quite ready for Georgia though.

Sorry, but couldnt disagree more. It is all about trajectory. USC is on a rapid path to the top of the CFP.
As long as CW remains healthy, the year will be epic and the future is even better. The defensive personnel are going to be completely turned over. It just needs to get into the top 50 defenses and with our offense, the games are mostly blow-outs by the halftime. Toughest games will be Notre Dame and Washington. I think oregon will be a flawed team that sometimes is good, but has enough flaws for Riley to gameplan a sure win.
It takes time to build a whole elite roster and culture and program.

Hey Lawyer John, I understand the caution. We are all jaded by the Helton years (sorry to bring up that name!)
I just think that Caleb has a full year under his belt and is going to have the weapons no matter who we face.
Only issue I can imagine is if the o-line is really not good, so we have no run game and CW is under constant pressure. I really think the o-line last year was a bit overrated, CW had to be houdini and there were times where the short yardage run game was shut down.

I am basing my opinion on SC’s defense from last year. SC’s defense got torched all season long. Then it got burned twice by utah and tulane. They quit. I will base my thought on the last sentence. Will they quit again or will they improve? Only time will tell.

PT, after last season’s debacle on defense, we hit rock bottom(defensively), and the only path we have is up. The new bodies coming in are proven commodities from other programs.
IMO, Riley will take a more hands-on approach with the defense. Besides Caleb’s injury, he knows that not being able to get off the field from a defensive aspect cost him a trip to the CFP. There were way too many “chunk plays” from our opponent last season.

Year to year teams rebuild. What Riley has under his belt that he didn’t have last year knowledge about what USC needs to go undefeated. Riley wants to play with pace, but last year the team struggled with pace. This year should be more consistent because the leadership is more developed.
No excuses, they should make it to the Pac 12 championship undefeated.

I think SC will lose one of the last 6 games of the year. Other than that, I think SC is going to be in the top 5 in the nation. They’ll probably be #1 offensively. They were #3 in offense last year and offensively, this year they are much better.

We could be sitting at #5 with the PAC12 title game next up. Which could represent redemption for the last year’s debacle in Las Vegas and a ticket to CFP.
