An Unimpressed View Of USC Recruiting

USC might have piled up 13 commitments in June but recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said the Trojans’ efforts are “a bit under par.”

This will make the fanboy media steam.

“USC has done a solid job in 2024, but I’m not as impressed as I should be. Ryan Pellum has a chance to be a star, and they’ve done well at defensive back, but too many good players are leaving the state of California, and it shouldn’t be happening. With high expectations this season and a Heisman QB, the hype for USC is as high as it’s been since Pete Carroll, and yet guys like Zabien Brown, Dylan Williams, and soon Brandon Baker are getting out of state. The future move out of the soon-to-be-dead Pac-12 was supposed to be important and a recruiting boost, but I’ll admit I expected Lincoln Riley to do much better on the trail at USC.”

    1. ‘Ol Mule Shoe and his boyfriend Alex Grinch got taken to the woodshed by a Tulane team that had two 4 star, a few 3 star and a bunch of walk ons.

Just imagine what Georgia would have done to the Ladies of Troy, hell the Bulldogs might have dropped a hundred on them.

  1. Win with defensive physicality and discipline, show development at each position and they will flock like elite WR,QB,DB do right now. 4 weeks until fall camp LET’S GO!!!!!! Wolfe can we get some details how the summer run practices are going? Who has stood out in those sessions? Recruiting is so subjective but coaching and player development is not.

  2. Well, SC can apparently count on one recruit, Duce Robinson, who was not drafted in the Top-300 prospects, possibly because baseball figured he was an NFL prospect and baseball was a mere sideline sport. That said, it would be great if Duce plays Trojan baseball

Insofar as recruiting, a lot of these California kids were being courted by the out-of-staters prior to Wiley’s arrival, so I would reserve judgment until after the 2025 recruiting class (if Wiles is still around)

    1. I don’t know if Dunce is relieved, with his pathway more defined, or feels disappointed. Perhaps Scott can arrange a one-on-one and get the true “Inside USC” intel!

  3. I think LR is doing a great recruiting job. If you just look at the 2022, 2023, and 2024 recruiting classes, you’ll see that it is getting better each year. They need a great year this year on the field and I think that they will get it. The NCAA went out of their way to destroy the SC football program with those unfair sanctions. They did the same thing back in 1983 at SMU and they still haven’t come back. The recruits are starting to see that SC really is back. One more great year and the recruits will start staying home.

    1. Yeah but somehow repeated over decades molestation of children was ‘ok’ over at PA St. and the phony ‘let your conscience be your guide’ cranked out by Joe Pa…….

  4. I never liked B.J. Honeycutt anyway. Didn’t know he had an opinion about CFB. Always thought Trapper John was funnier. They were wrong about Tom Brady and many others, including Patrick Mahomes. No one even takes Mel Kiper seriously either. These players sometimes turn into the All Americans that no one expected.

    1. speaking of Tom Brady, I heard Kim Kardashian has him in her cross-hairs

(please, kim, don’t ruin the guy. He has a solid reputation, to need for him to get down in the weeds)

  6. The Rivals guy? Georgia shouldn’t have won two championships since Rivals claimed that Alabama had better recruiting classes during that time period. One season and Farrell shouldn’t expect USC to get these guys back like that. Not with NIL making it easier for players to leave home. Is Scott Wolf a germ spreader or what?

    1. No Mike, he finds everything to say about USC administration, coaches, and some player’s who don’t meet his low standards of journalism. As long as he has been around the program he would have more respect to get one on one interviews with insiders of USC,’s inner circle. Mike you will need to go to WeAreUSC or other sites to find inside USC? But we love the ultimate USC hater. #KeepFightingOn#WeDon’tLikeHaterAssJournalistWhoAlwaysHasAnAxeToGrind

      1. I know most mock Wolf’s stepping on everyone’s toes over at Heritage Hall – the resulting contempt shown him by the higherups is to be expected but on the other hand this could be a board written by a scribe who cranks out the company line day after day week after week like most of the LA Times columnists do for their pets – Lakers/Dodgers/Rams.

Gain here is the angst Wolf creates by so many here that move to ‘sort’ the chaff from the wheat. Imagine being at the ‘off site’ (residence of) Bill Plaschke and crying as he’s desperately composing some boring idiocy like his ‘Paradise’ CA football team and ‘kaboom’ a major story breaks at 4 pm or a major comeback at 8 pm? There’s the SCNG with the latest.

  7. could Riley be doing a better job of recruiting? sure. but…

they lost some recruits to texas a&m due to NIL money, but Ohio State just lost a guy to Miami and you know that was pure NIL. Brandon Baker is also about NIL.

they pulled some really good recruits from Georgia.

has USC become the recruiting juggernaut yet? no. but it is doing pretty good.

these early verbal commitments may or may not even be solid. the outcome of the season will make a huge difference in the end.

with NIL the families of recruits can have their travel paid, so there will just be more players not limited to local schools.

  8. So I can find out who this guy is today, but I cannot find anything about where he gained his “football knowledge” . Where did he go to school? What position did he play? He is Rivals and considered “the godfather of recruiting,” but how did he actually earn this title?
There is nothing I can find that says I should respect his opinion. Maybe that’s by design. Kids hang on to the star system, but what value are stars if they are meaningless? A person can claim to be the world’s best trashcan, but until I see them eat trash it’s all just a story.

  9. If Top 10 HS recruiting plus generally top tier transfer portal recruiting aren’t enough to “impress” you and Farrell, well… you are in the minority on this one. Fight On to you anyway…
