The main photo from Friday’s column is from the 1970 USC-UCLA game.
No. 83 is All-American Willie Hall. The No. 83 had quite a legacy in the 60’s-70’s as Jimmy Gunn, Hall and Richard Wood wore it. All became All-Americans.
No. 19 for UCLA is quarterback Dennis Dummit, who passed for a school-record 2,393 yards that season.

- You can’t beat looking at the front page of a newspaper like this 1952 Daily Trojan. Memo to L.A. Times.

- Is this another example of how school spirit was different in the 1950’s?
In 1954, USC played Oregon State in a best of 3 series to determine the Pacific Coast Conference basketball champion. The games were held at Long Beach City College.
In the deciding game, a contigent of football players led by Jon Arnett, Leon Clarke, Orlando Ferrante, Ed Fouch, Dick Nunis and Sam Tsagalakis showed up to support the basketball team. Football coach Jess Hill, baseball coach Rod Dedeaux and track coach Jess Mortensen were at the game. Dedeaux had just returned from a month in Japan at an Armed Services baseball clinic.
USC football assistants Don Clark (former Trojan player who eventually became head coach), Bill Fisk (a player on 1938 national championship team whose son, Bill Jr., was a future USC All-American) and George Ceithaml (a former starting QB at Michigan) were at the game.
There was a report USC basketball coach Forrest Twogood was so nervous, he was surrounded by empty cigarette wrappers before the game.
USC students did individual cheers for Twogood and the starting five before the game.
Who else were there for the entire series? UCLA coach John Wooden.
Oregon State was led by center Swede Halbrook, who was 7-foot-3, the tallest player in college or pro basketball at the time.
USC won the series, 2-0, with a 48-45 victory in the deciding game as Roy Irvin scored 18 points and Dick Welsh added 13. Halbrook had a game-high 22.
This was the last USC team to reach the Final Four.

I like this post because it mentions Wood and Dick.

Well Sam Gilbert is dead and can’t support Andy but it wouldn’t surprise me if he were alive that he’d switch allegiance to USC so he wouldn’t have to cheat in order to associate with winners.

That 1970 SC-sucla game is one I prefer to forget (45-20 sucla
or something like that)

But UCLA would only win one more time in the 1970s… 25-22 in 1975. SC enjoyed almost total domination during the end of the John McKay era and the beginning of the John Robinson Era.

I saw the old Basketball score and thought, “that must be the half time score,” before I realized Basketball in the 50s was a game of keep-away with occasional shooting. The 30 second clock was a wishful thinking idea during that era.
Any time USC beats Ucla it makes my day, whether it’s the Rose bowl or just bragging rights it’s always a big deal.
