Saturday Buzz: Tennessee Gets Better Treatment Than USC

Not that it wasn’t obvious previously, but the NCAA continues to show that it went too far with USC’s penalties more than 10 years ago.

Tennessee committed more than 200 individual infractions but got no bowl ban and fined $8 million by the NCAA. The Vols will also have a 28-scholarship reduction.

But Tennessee has already self-imposed 18 scholarships, a number that covers the past two seasons and the upcoming one. So it will only need to reduce two more scholarships over the next five years. Five years!

This all sounds like a slap on the wrist compared to USC, which had a two-year bowl ban and was docked 30 scholarships over just three years.

That’s why Tennessee coach Josh Heupel told ESPN it was a “huge relief” not to face a bowl ban. That’s what really hurts recruiting and lowers the morale of a program. The other penalties get forgotten by the players they are not as tangible.

Has any school faced penalties like USC since 2010?

The NCAA has retreated ever since the USC case. Isn’t 200 infractions a lack of institutional control?

It’s great the current Tennessee players are not being punished by a bowl ban. Too bad the USC players affected by the bowl ban can’t say the same thing.

  1. The NCAA has always looked the other way when it came to the SEC. Why do you think that the SEC has won 13 out of the last 17 NC’s? They’ve been cheating like hell for years with no response from the NCAA. It is and has been a corrupt organization for years. What other organization would hire Paul Dee as the head of its rules committee after being the AD of Miami where they broke every rule under the sun.

    1. Right Parcel. My favorite was Cam Newton. Caught with a stolen laptop at Florida. Later placed on academic probation. Was stuck behind Tim Tebow. Decided to transfer and was offered $180,000 from Mississippi State and his father replied “I’m sorry, no, the Auburn offer is too much to pass up.” Was able to lead Auburn to a Natty and a Heisman. I don’t recall any sanctions. Meanwhile, we got a 30 player scholarship reduction and no bowl games because an agent paid rent on Reggie’s parents home for less than a year without the knowledge of the university.

      1. Part of the reason for that is that for a long time the head of the rules committee in the NCAA was also the commissioner of the SEC. If that ain’t a conflict of interest, then I don’t know what is. His job as the commissioner is to promote progress in the SEC. His job as the head of the rules committee is to hinder the progress of any school that cheats.
To this day, Bush hasn’t got his trophy back. The NCAA is still penalyzing him for something that he did that is legal today. Reggie is still being penalyzed for breaking a rule that the NCAA is admitting was a bad rule. SC is no longer under sanctions but Reggie still is.

      2. I feel at some point in time, Reggie will get his Heisman back. It might take a turnover of the committee members.

Then again, Pete Rose is still locked out of the Hall of Fame

      3. It’s hilarious how one sided this was- and proof it was a personal vendetta by the “good ol boys” who couldn’t stand SC’s / the West’s dominance. They got together and shut USC down. Good to know that piece of shi$ Dee is 6 feet underground for his part in this mess. Took 10 years off of SC’s recruiting .

    2. Documents have surfaced to prove how corrupt the NCAA was with respect to the Bush investigation. Why was Paul Dee allowed to run this investigation when he could not keep his own house in order? It’s my understanding, the NCAA never interviewed the Bush family. If it wasn’t for Todd McNair’s lawsuit, a lot of information would still be unavailable to the public. Perhaps USC should have challenged the penalties based on the precedent of leniency with other schools and or conferences. The link is a good read

      1. Yep — NCAA made up the rules as they went when it came to USC. But guess what? There is a remedy available to institutions injured by governing boards operating without or in excess of their jurisdiction —a writ of prohibition. Pat Haden, a “lawyer”, let the NCAA Board of Appeals fuck him up the ass.

      2. You and I have spoken on this very subject numerous times. Pat basically bent over and said, thank you NCAA may I have another. I don’t recall if there were any statements, on record or made in public, as to why Pat didn’t challenge the NCAA’s outcome of the investigation. Perhaps it does haunt Pat that he didn’t do more in the heat of the moment, we will never know

      8. I’ve always wondered why SC just gave in and didn’t sue the NCAA like other schools did. Maybe giving the NCAA free rein to destroy SC’s program is what some of the administrators(like Max Nakias) wanted…..the beat down of SC’s football program.

That’s the word the Ladies of Troy received shortly after the most embarrassing humiliating loss in USC Trojan Football History when the Ladies of Troy, ‘Ol Mule Shoe and his boyfriend Alex Grinch were run out the building in the Cotton Bowl by a lowly, almost FCS quality Tulane team made up almost entirely of walk ons and a few 3 Star players

  2. I think Taylor Tatum and Deuce Robinson should seriously consider giving up baseball and just giving their whole attention to football. They may like baseball but apparently, these guys aren’t as good as they think that they are. There were 20 rounds in the baseball draft….614 players. Those were the ones that they really considered.
But there was actually 88 rounds. I looked up to round 35 which was 1050 players. Then I got tired of looking. I can tell you for a fact that they were not drafted in the first 35 rounds.
These guys are really good football players and they’re apparently not all that great in baseball. It’s hard to excel in two sports. Bo Jackson did it because Bo was great in football and great in baseball. These two guys may be great in football but they are not great in baseball. They need to set priorities.

    1. SC is too committed to Texas RB’s. They are saying that if they can’t get Tatum, they’re going after a Texas back by the name of Derrick McFall. The kid is 5’10” and 175 pounds. Why go after him when you have a great back(Nate Frazier) who is 5’1″ and 208 right in your backyard. The kid has virtually every big school in the country going after him. He runs hard. He is fast(10.58 in the forty). He’s a great blocker. He’s a good receiver. The kid can do everything.
SC has offered him but has not persued him much. It’s almost as if they don’t want him. If Tatum decides to go to Oklahoma, I’d take a better look at this kid. Maybe the fact that Tatum didn’t get drafted at all will convince him that baseball isn’t all that important at.

      1. Parcel: You say Nate Frazier is 5’1 tall, weighs 208, and runs a 10.58 forty. Sounds like short, fat, and slow. Are you confusing Nate with Sandy Barbour.

        Liked by 5 people

      2. 10.58 in the 100 meters is not slow by any means. He’s not 5’1”. He’s 5’11”. My mistake(printing error). 5’11” , 208 and 10.58 in the 100 meters is not short, fat and slow. It’s the perfect size for a running back. He’s small enough(height-wise) so that he can hide behind those huge O-Lineman. They don’t see him until he has darted past them. Barry Sanders was 5’8″ and 203. Emmit Smith was 5’9″ and 221. Walter Payton was 5’10” and 200. Ladainian Tomlinson was 5’10” and 215. Marshall Faulk was 5’10” and 211. Earl Campbell was 5’11” and 232.
I could be wrong about this guy but I think that he will be a really good RB at the college level. The big schools are all going after him. SC has offered him but for some reason, they haven’t really persued him in a big way.

        Like

      3. Or maybe they are too fixated on Taylor Tatum(and maybe they really think that they can still get him) that they don’t want to appear to be giving up on Tatum. Maybe if Tatum commits to Oklahoma, they will take a closer look at Frazier. It all depends upon what McDonald (the RB coach) thinks of him.

      5. Raleek is a lesser version of Reggie Bush and Ladainian Tomlinson…..at this point, a far lesser version….like not even in the same universe. Maybe that will change in the future……I don’t know. All those guys could be a big part of your running and passing game.

        Like

      6. The verdict is still out on Raleek. There were just too many negative plays, then he flashes with an ankle-breaking run. I guess the pass protection(not sure why Riley would count on him to protect Caleb) and consistency are not there yet. He has time on his side. I have heard that Lloyd has good pass-catching ability out of the backfield.

      7. Nate Frazier is a great blocker. Usually you have to teach a high school RB how to block in the backfield to pick up the blitzing LB’s and protect the QB. Not this guy. He can block. Like I said before. He’s not 175 pounds. This guy has a body on him. He’s just as big as some of those LB’s.

  7. What the NCAA did to us was insane and grossly unfair. The process was dragged on for years and years for maximum destructive effect. The other schools in the PAC-12 sat gleefully on the sidelines and cheered the whole tar and feather spectacle. The net result was that the PAC-12, without the marquee national power of USC went full throttle down the Highway to irrelevance. Miami, at the time, had much worse infractions. South Carolina basketball had academic and athletic scandals involving bogus classes “taught” by a booster. Florida State had a shoplifting QB, etc. Now SC and UCLA are headed out of the conference and the rest of the schools will be de facto irrelevant.
By the way – the NCAA should give Reggie Bush his Heisman back. Though I think it was an incredibly selfish thing for him to refuse to man up and take responsibility for his family’s actions. He let his teammates down and his school down by not taking responsibility. Now the courts have decided that players should be allowed to benefit from their NIL.
