This Is An Enduring USC Tradition

It’s an important tradition that USC still hosts the Los Angeles City baseball semifinals at Dedeaux Field.

Even back in 1964, the City Section championship between Birmingham and Grant High Schools was held at Bovard Field.

The landmark Methodist Episcopal University Church, later known as United University Church is in the background. The 82-year-old building is now being renovated as the new home for the School of Dramatic Arts.

Ron Thomas allowed Grant just five hits in pitching his 12th win of the season to lead Birmingham to the City championship on June 3, 1964.
  • Banquets, luncheons and beauty contests. That’s all that seemed to matter back in the day.

Here is USC student Barbara Stephens, 21, of North Hollywood, waiting to find out if she will be named Helen of Troy (homecoming queen) in 1960. El Rodeo is the name of USC’s yearbook.

      1. Just like my friend/idol, Dylan!!! I could be Helen of Troy and celebrate my womanhood. Oh to dream such pleasant thoughts gives me goose bumps…

  1. First time I set foot on Dedeaux Field was after my senior year in high school when I tried out for the Southern California High School All-Star Team. Before the tryout began, we were all seated in the stands and Dedeaux himself came out dressed in his USC uniform and gave us a talk about respecting the game by always giving your best effort on the field and off. Truly, a great memory.

    1. You don’t try out for an All Star team, a player makes an All Star team.

Your story is B.S. so quit making shit up.

      1. Look it up stupid shit. It was called The Sunbelt Series vs. The Oklahoma All Stars. There were 50 invited and they took 25. You had to be All-CIF or All-City.

  2. You addressed Barbara Stephens as “he”. Does that mean that “she” is really a “he”? It does get confusing in this day and age.

and with my usual charm I casually told her
that I never saw her show
which she took with her usual smile
