It’s a good time to talk to college coaches before training camp starts, so I spoke to a Big 12 coach about USC.
“Their defense lacked toughness,” the coach said. “That’s not a new trait for a Lincoln Riley team. But it was probably something USC fans didn’t expect.
“They have a chance this season to rectify that. But will they? They are going to try to integrate some transfers and we’ll see if they can overcome some historical tendencies that Riley’s defenses have had since he became a head coach.”
That’s going to be the crux of the issue for USC: Can some transfers get the defense to do things it was incapable of doing last season.
I’m open to the idea USC will improve in some spots (linebacker, defensive tackle) but I’m much less impressed than Riley with the cornerbacks. So we’ll see.

When The Enquirer or other tabloids catch starlets on the street without makeup, it really shows how much of a difference their war paint makes. A lot of YouTube videos on it, too. Single guys gotta be careful, cuz that woman you wake up with the next morning might not bear any resemblance to the young lady they met the night before.
And on the flip side, have to give them credit for all the work they put into looking nice. Most of us guys take about 5 minutes. (My wife took 5-10 minutes when we first met. Twenty years later, 10-15.)

Seems like there is a correlation between explosive offenses who score quickly and poor defenses. For example, the San Diego Chargers under Don Coryell and the Oregon Ducks under Chip Kelly. Maybe it will help if Reilly tries to develop a grind it out, time consuming, running game to compliment the passing game. It will help preserve big leads in the second half and allow the defense to rest. Or, we can just outscore the other team like the Chargers and Ducks did.

with last year’s defense we could even lose with 49 points on the scoreboard. and you cant count on scoring consistently in every game, there will be a game or two where the ball doesnt bounce our way and we only score 42.
the defense is going to be much better. it isnt just about the transfers. the players from last year have beefed up. there were several players from last year that were injured or didnt play much that could make a real contribution this year – Zion Branch, Domani Jackson, Romello Height, Raesjon Davis, Eric Gentry (injured last half of season).
i think the corners are going to be solid – Covington and either CRW or Domani. I’m less confident in Ceyair. cross-training CRW to nickel is smart.
there are a couple players that will see alot less playing time – Shane Lee and Max Williams.
this really is a totally different defense.
the o-line/d-line competition will be stiffer this year so practices will prepare them better for opposing teams.

I wonder what impact Greg Burns and KK are making on the program. I think having Burns to give an outside perspective might be real important.

With the pass happy offenses today, holding an opponent under 20 points would be a miracle. In order for that to happen SC will need to ply heavy pressure on the qb and very tight coverage and good one on one tackling. If the stop the run, then make them pass, that helps as well. We will see.

You mention the point I would have made about Georgia and Ohio St, two new QBs with basically little to no college experience. I don’t know what Phil was smoking the day he had those thoughts in his head. And from a statistical viewpoint, the other three teams will be facing much tougher defenses. As MG said, the potential impact of the offense is predicated on the health of Caleb.

Has any Air Raid coach successfully paired their offense with a formidable defense?
The Air Raid is a swamp creature produced by TV revenues and the propensity of TV watchers to tune out if there is a blow out score. So, what has resulted, not just in football but baseball and basketball as well, is a “shoot out” back and forth game until the last minute, all choreographed by the referees who calls fouls to get the losing team back into the game. Dave Aranda is a defensive coach who is now head coach of Baylor which held two teams to one touchdown or less during its 13 game 2022 schedule. Baylor lost 3 high scoring games. In 2021 they held six opponents to under two touchdowns. It can be done apparently. But it is hard to do when the offense scores, say, every couple of minutes, letting the opponents have more minutes of total game time. It appears the running game might be the key in establishing control of the games.

I’ve said before that I have agreed with everything that LR has done so far except one thing…..He brought back Alex Grinch. I think that that was a mistake. I still think LR will solve this defensive problem.
He proved that he could win 10 games a year and Big-12 championships at Oklahoma. I still think that he would have been able to win 9-10 games a year at Oklahoma in the SEC if that’s all he wanted.
He could have ended a nice career at Oklahoma. I believe he left Oklahoma because he wanted more. He wanted to win NC’s and he believed that SC offered him a better opportunity to do that.
He has to be coming to the conclusion that the old days where you’re trying to win NC’s by outscoring your opponent doesn’t work. You must have a defense. He came here and re-established his powerful offense first. Now he’s working on the defense. This year he has re-stocked the defense with outstanding players(and he’s still not done). He’ll do what he has to do.
If Grinch doesn’t produce a powerful defense this year, he’ll be gone. I think LR knows what has to be done and will do it. That’s the difference between him and CH. CH talked about solving problems but he never did.

Riley needs a contingency plan if Grinch crumbles under pressure. We can’t let Caleb’s abilities get undermined by a deficiency in the DC position. I know the last 6 games are the strength of our schedule, but it’s somewhat of a blessing. It should allow the wrinkles to get worked out and some valuable playing time for the backups.
One of the things that separates the SEC from the rest is its depth. The next man up at key positions is often a future NFL player. Look how pathetic the depth was with our front 7 last season. We had defensive end bodies in the tackle positions

The SEC definitely has the players and that is why they have won 13 of the last 17 NC’s. But why do they have the players? Because they have been cheating for years and they have never worried about getting caught because they always had friends in high places and they knew it.

You can’t dominate for all those years without some payola taking place. The reason Clemson had some success was the NFL bodies they had in the trenches and the backups were future NFL players. Plus, Lawerence was a generational QB for Clemson that fell into Dabo’s lap.

Lincoln Riley’s problem is learning how to win at high profile jobs without the same experience that his peers gained like Saban, Smart or even Oregon. The way that he’s strengthened his back room is very promising. Maybe Grinch cannot level up, we’ll see. I see that they’ve gotten bigger and more athletic on both sides of the ball.
