Former USC football coach John Robinson turned 88 today.
For about two decades at USC, Oregon was considered the cradle of coaches for the Trojans.
John McKay and Robinson both played at Oregon. Both were long-time Oregon assistant coaches before coming to USC as assistant coaches.
When McKay resigned in 1975, there were a lot of assistant coaches vying to replace him. Craig Fertig and Marv Goux were interested. Dave Levy was considered an extremely popular choice because he was beloved by the players.
But USC president John Hubbard hired Robinson, who was the running backs coach with the Oakland Raiders after being an assistant for McKay from 1972-74.
Why? The story I heard from those involved was that Hubbard and Robinson always played racquetball together at USC and that sealed the deal.
Robinson was 67-14-2 during his first tenure at USC.
When Robinson resigned from being vice president of university relations to become the Rams coach on Feb. 14, 1983, there was speculation he might take some USC assistants with him but no official announcements were made.
However, Julie’s broke the news on its sign outside the restaurant that assistant coaches Marv Goux and Hudson Houck would also leave USC for the Rams.
And where was Robinson that night after taking the Rams job? With Goux at Julie’s, of course!

I recall John Robinson’s first stint at SC and how his 1976 team lost badly its first game and Trojans were heard complaining that
he was no John McKay, but he won out that year, and then won the National Championship in 1978 and almost won it again in 1979.

John Robinson’s first stint as USC Head Coach was epitomized by class. He won 1 national championships in ’78 and finished #2 in ’76 and ’79. In his final UCLA in 1982 game he eschewed going for the tie and though he failed in the 2 point conversion, he made Trojans all over the world proud.

I think it was So Cal who suggested a monetary motive. At least that would make some kind of sense — otherwise the course of conduct we’re seeing is completely irrational.

For actual Trojans, it’s great know he went to a favorite USC hangout, rather than many other fine dining establishments in downtown LA. If you were a Trojan, you’d get it.

Good story. I thought I read Scott Wolf previously that the reason Robinson got the job over Dave Levy was that he was more “telegenic”.

I guess no one noticed that Jim Leonard was picked up as a defensive analyst at Illinois for a song. One of the best (and youngest) D-coordinators in the business and no need for a buyout. What a blown opportunity. This is what you get when you don’t know how to hire an AD. Has any program in the country been with out an AD this long ever???????
