USC Morning Buzz: Thanks, Kliavkoff!

Even with Colorado expected to join the Big 12 today, I find few examples of criticism of Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff.

I’m not saying he’s to blame for all the Pac-12’s problems. But the guy has Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark running circles around him and still the media seems to find it hard to blame him for anything. I guess it’s all about keeping access to the commish.

Consider:

  • Kliavkoff said last week losing schools to the Big 12 was “not a concern.”

He added, “I discount that because I know the truth.”

  • The Big 12 signed its media-rights deal last year. Kliavkoff couldn’t even present numbers last Thursday to the Pac-12 presidents, which is believed to be a reason Colorado bolted.
  • The Big 12 added four members (BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Houston) and is on the verge of stealing Colorado. Kliavkoff couldn’t even handle the no-brainer addition of San Diego State last month.
  • Kliavkoff’s biggest accomplishment seems to be that he is not Larry Scott. But how long can he live off that? Last week he claimed, “What we’re seeing is the longer we wait for the media deal, the better our options get.” Who bought that?
  • There was also the move of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten. Now maybe he was powerless but Kliavkoff was also totally blindsided by it. Remember, the Big 12 was considered to be on its knees with the loss of Texas and Oklahoma. Look how Yormark responded. What has Kliavloff done since USC and UCLA left?

  1. Scott Wolf: “Thanks Kliavkoff!” … it’s the kiss of death. Also: “Thanks Carol Folt” the diminutive, buck-toothed President of USC.

      1. At the very least, Georgy should go on a booze bender, go missing, and show up in a hotel in Amsterdam two weeks from now like Jack Hubbard.

    2. Folt’s description duly noted, but on the other hand
She did get rid of Swanny
      Eventually ridded ‘Ton-o-hel’
      Nixed the Urban hire
Apparently corroborated the Bone and Wiley hires
Not her preference, but relieved football is doing well

    3. Kliavkoff should have gone to USC and UCLA (well, maybe just USC) as soon as he took the job to solidify their participation and figure out the revenue numbers that would keep them home.

The knucklehead Pac-12 university presidents picked a Vegas marketing guy after they picked a tennis promoter. Again, they chose poorly and now the conference is circling the drain.

      1. Kliavkoff actually did make an appearance at USC right after his hire. I’m thinking it may have been a football practice, though maybe not.

    1. I hope and pray that Oregon will jump to the Big 12 with Colorado. Anything to destroy the Pac 12. I don’t get how mediocre men are allowed to bask in their stupidity-oh wait. I’m in the wrong forum to discuss ineptitude.

  3. The WAC12 old Commish, and the lastest wus pus tennis jerk were both incompetent to handle negotiations of media deals. Now with the WAC12 is, becoming extinct like the dinosaurs were billions of years ago . Now its No. 1 & 2 brands are gone. Another 3 glue brands that could survive the exodus, and with the right $$ media deal
,and with expansion of SD St, Fresno State,Boise State, SMU, Colorado St. They could carry WAC12 into the lowest media deal n college football history. Thanks George your a barrel of laughs. “The Conference of Incompetence” WKA “The Conference of Champions”.

btw, I was always confused by Avicenna’s discussion of whether or not a soul created by God AFTER “the Beginning” —which will, nevertheless, exist for “the rest of eternity”— can be said to be as eternal as God [Who existed “For All Eternity”]…..

[I wonder if Carrie — an exceedingly clever writer and amazing conversationalist —-thought it was odd she’d probably be most remembered for that Star Wars Poster].

because without USC the whole value of the league plunges. the Pac-12 would be in very good position right now if USC and UCLA were still in the league and they had a TV deal in place. the Pac-12 could have 5 teams that are in the top 15 at some time during the year and could actually be selling the rebirth of football on the west coast.

Kliakoff is getting his lunch eaten. How can the Pac-12 remain viable now? Do all the teams get absorbed by the Big-12? That would be a coup.

    2. They were counting on nostalgia to keep USC to continue to put up with the ineptitude. Even UCLA got a clue when they realized that the athletic department had a $100 million hit from losing Under Armor AND a $54 million hit from the Comcast overpayments! The final blow was not being able to get a deal from ESPN, Fox or CBS. Even NBC would have paid for a Pac 12 package to go along with their Notre Dame programming. Utterly humiliating. Now it’s streaming along with movies on Amazon Prime or Apple+. Better get used to waiting for Inter Miami games to finish before you see a Pac 12 game.

  5. Scooter,

The Pac 12 will fall. Washington St will go to the Big West conference along with Oregon St. Oregon, washington, standford and cal will either be a basis for a new league or they wil try and find a legue to join. They too could join the Big West and that would make it a stronger league. My opinion. Time will tell.

It may not even be the Pac-8, maybe the Pac-2 or something
Yeah, just Cal and Washington St, nobody wanted them,
duking it out for Pac-2 supremacy

You are one of the few voices of reason here and it’s nice that you are open to constructive criticism. One more tip for you would be to use fewer in place of less when referring to something that is quantifiable.
