Who is going to get squeezed out of playing time at the rush end position for USC?
Look at the logjam of players at this spot:
Solomon Byrd, R-Sr.
Sam Greene, Fr.
Romello Height, R-Jr.
Jamil Muhammad, R-Sr. DJ Peevy, Fr.
Braylan Shelby, Fr.
Height started the opener last year but was hurt and missed most of the season. Byrd started three games. But the starter is expected to be Muhammad, the transfer from Georgia State.
So you’ve got all that going on before you even get the freshmen. Greene looked like he has star potential in the spring. Shelby and Peevy will also think they can get into the rotation.
But there is no way all these guys are going to get playing time. USC might have depth issues at some spots but not rush end. Remember this is one of the most athletic positions and it’s not complicated from a scheme standpoint, so a younger player can emerge.
- I can’t wait until Friday to save this picture. Wilt Chamberlain playing at the Sports Arena against the Lakers on Feb. 27, 1961. He scored 34 points, but the Lakers (without Elgin Baylor) won, 121-116.
Wilt is surrounded by four Lakers: Ray Felix (14), Rudy LaRusso (35), Tommy Hawkins (20) and Jerry West (44).
Wilt averaged 38.4 points and 27.2 rebounds this season. The following year he averaged 50.4 points and 50.4 points and 25.6 rebounds per game.

The rush end is supposed to be the most important position in Grinch’s defense.

Does Grinch know that ?

Yes, he does. I’ve heard him say it myself. The football pundants all say it too but they say it because they have heard him say it.

Admittedly late but a deal seems imminent – note the rumor in the article has AZ leaving to the Big12 too.

Perhaps that hypothesis is not so farfetched of Cal and Stanford being the last Pac-12 schools standing to form the new Pac-2–

Can you imagine being 5th string ‘Rush-End’ on the SC team
and thinking, “I’m only 4 groin pulls from seeing the field”

I saw Wilt the Stilt, he hated that term, at Muscle Beach trying to play volleyball.
No way Wilt would dominate today’s players as he did back in the day

RE, is more athletic yes. I here it’s J. Muhammad is the annoited starter. But myself the dark horse is Bryant Shelby or Peevy both are long fast and ultra athletic. The question is can they use multiple moves, techniques to constantly apply pressure on QB n get sacks. Hopefully we can use Lucas on the other side?

Braylon Shelby will rise during the season, but counting Height out of it is premature. Very deep position, but I would rather have one elite talent than lots of just good guys.
The big question on the defense is still the linebackers. Mason Cobb will be tons better, but who is going to start opposite him? will gentry come on strong and dominate? will raesjon step up or will tackett be the freshman phenom? or will the unit be mediocre? this is the core of the whole defense, plugging holes in the run game and pursuing to outside and dropping back into coverage. nickelback also needs to improve alot.
anyone know what coverage USC runs most? are they Cover 2, 3, other?

Gametv agree, looking back at the PC era remember LB’s Cushing Ray M. Starks, Rivers, DL Jackson team was ultra tough n had plenty of speed u couldn’t run side to side. With all this speed n length I see a big jump on defense maybe like 350yds total defense say 23.5 pa 4.1 pc 225 pyda 125 ydra per game just based on sheer raw talent need IQ to go with that tho

Grinch runs a man to man Cover 1 or zone Cover 2 with a variation on quarters. Very basic coverage scheme and no double teams. That’s why Utah then Tulane tore his team apart because coaches got tape on the scheme and punished Grinch for his lack of variations. Greg Brown was brought in to make up for the need of more implementation of more complex installations.

Just to add to the equation I know they moved K. Foreman from RE to what position Stand up LB or just like youth football just follow the ball? Then tackle his best position is Bench” Bust” Warmer. I like him as a person but him n Heights are supposed to be like Lucas, Alexander impact? Ship them to Missouri bcuz I need the “Show me something State”. #ImOverHypedRival5*PlayersAndTransferPortalPlayersWhoCannotStayHealthy#REFreshmanReadyToDominate

If one guy isn’t getting the job done maybe it’s good to have a lot jam it’s a physical position trading off is also good.
Our first game is 26 days away. I suppose someone will figure it out by then.
