USC Notes: Making Money Is All That Matters

One crazy byproduct of all this conference realignment is the way college athletic dept.’s have convinced fans that making money is all that matters.

You can’t compete unless you are in a conference that makes more money, according to the spin. Think about it from USC’s perspective: It has an endowment of more than $8 billion.

But $15-20 million more for the athletic dept. is make-or-break to compete? If it’s so important why hasn’t the university subsidized the athletic dept.? That’s a no go, of course.

The fans, however, are just programmed to believe making money is winning. Just like with NIL. The big names are getting money and everyone is getting crumbs. Hey, it must be working!

  • The more I learn about the Salute to Troy, the less I always like it.

USC wants as many former players to show up as possible because “the football program is wanting to impress recruits by having as many former players . . . at this celebration” according to an invitation sent to former players. Isn’t every weekend a recruiting weekend?

Anyways, if you are a former player, you must pay $80 for a ticket. Or $70 if you are a member of the Trojan Football Alumni Club. That doesn’t sound like USC wants ex-players to show up that much.

The only exceptions are if you are a member of the 25th or 50th anniversary teams. Then you don’t have to pay.

But it’s weird to charge former players basically the same as the public if you really want them that badly.

    From what I read the ‘Big-10’ has a $7-Billion for 7 years tv deal
    now with 16 teams in 2024 or close to $60-million per not $100-mil

    And why, Scott, would you like ‘Salute to Troy’ “less” due to the fact that SC is requesting old football alums to attend– because they are being made to pay like everybody else?

        Seau’s time at USC wasn’t just about numbers, though; during his two-year career the Trojans amassed a 19-4-1 record, won two Pac-10 titles and played in back-to-back Rose Bowls. The following year Seau was taken by the Chargers in the first round of the 1990 NFL draft.

        Seau’s legacy lives on at USC in multiple ways, most substantially via the jersey number he wore for the Trojans, No. 55. Though not the founding member of the “55 Club” — he was preceded by Trojan great Jack Del Rio — Seau’s success helped turn the jersey number into a Trojan tradition carried on by the likes of Willie McGinest, Keith Rivers, and Chris Claiborne.

        Seau was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 and one year earlier became a member of the Trojan “Ring of Honor” at the L.A. Coliseum where he had first made his name- Jerry Hinnen, CBS Sports.com

        “The lesson they take from this is — it doesn’t matter how much they betray our trust,” Stewart said.
