If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Let’s take a break from the endless conference realignment talk.

Oh wait, just as we said that, we get pulled back in with this development.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
  • And now for some history:
  • It’s the 1997 USC-Florida State game. USC gamely challenged the No. 5-ranked Seminoles before losing, 14-7, at the Coliseum.
USC safety Rashard Cook chases Florida State running back Dee Feaster
This field goal was the only points scored as Oregon State upset No. 1-ranked USC, 3-0, in 1967. The Trojans rebounded with the famous victory over the new No. 1 UCLA the following week.
  • Don Clark, the new head coach USC, assembled his new staff together for a picture on April 3, 1957. From left: Clark; Marv Goux; Mel Hein centering the ball; George Dickson and Al Davis. Not pictured: Backfield coach Don Doll. These were the days when Davis would bring his infant son to USC (Mark Davis).
  • OK, now I have to talk about Don Doll, who led USC in rushing in 1944, 1947 and 1948.

In the history of the NFL, Doll is the only player to record 10 interceptions in three different seasons (1949, 1950 and 1953). In 1949, as a rookie with the Detroit Lions, he intercepted four passes in one game. When he retired in 1954, he was the NFL’s all-time leader in interceptions with 41.

Doll won an NFL title in 1952 and was the Pro Bowl MVP in 1953. In 2008, he was named to the Lions’ 75th season all-time team. He missed the 1945 season at USC because he was a marine and was on the U.S.S. Missouri when the Japanese signed surrender papers onboard to end World War II.

Don Doll runs for yardage for USC. On the ground is USC lineman John Ferraro, who was the longest-serving L.A. City Council member in history (1966-2001).
  • Rams defensive lineman Lamar Lundy (85) presents an imposing figure for Cowboys QB Don Meredith at the Coliseum on August 11, 1964. No. 53 is Rams linebacker Mike Henry, who of course was co-captain of the 1957 USC football team.
  • The Coliseum was dedicated on August 2, 1923, 100 years ago this week. President Warren G. Harding was going to lead the ceremonies as you can see from his busy schedule the day of the festivities.

But Harding died in San Francisco from a heart attack and never made it to Los Angeles.

  • Harding (center) did attend the 1923 Rose Bowl between USC and Penn State. USC president Rufus von KleinSmid, who never missed a photo opportunity with a famous public figure, is standing on the far left.
  • Hugh McElhenny, one of the greatest players ever produced in Los Angeles, is about to return this punt 80 yards for Washington High School vs. Canoga Park in 1947.

McElhenny wanted to go to USC but did not have the grades. So he went to Compton College, coached by former USC player Tay Brown. But after just one season, he learned the University of Washington could accept him immediately. USC needed him to go another year to Compton.

McElhenny went to Washington, became an All-American, rushed for 296 yards and 5 TD’s vs. Washington State and returned a punt 100 yards for a TD vs. USC. He then became the ninth player selected overall in the 1952 NFL Draft and was selected for the Pro Bowl six times.

BEAUTY QUEENS, BANQUETS AND LUNCHEONS

  • USC running back Lynn Cain, left, and defensive lineman Rich Dimler take a break from preparing to face Notre Dame at the Coliseum and concentrate on showing Rose Bowl Queen Catherine Gilmour the fine art of throwing a football.
  • Gilmour visited a USC practice on November 20, 1978. USC had already clinched its Rose Bowl bid and awaited the winner of that weekend’s Michigan-Ohio State game.

RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK

  • Literally across the street from USC and great hours!

Time to get dressed up and go to downtown Los Angeles in 1942. This is between 706-718 S. Hill Street.

The Cutts Building in the background is now the Great Western Building in the Jewelry District.

  • Below is the Warner Bros. Theatre at 405 W. 7th Street in 1953. “Roman Holiday,” starring Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn and Eddie Albert is playing.

An Arden Ice Cream promotion for Texas pecan ice cream, featuring horses and a stagecoach was traveling throughout Downtown Los Angeles when the photo was taken.

  • I’ve written about the Currie’s Ice Cream store that was right across from USC on Jefferson Blvd. But there was also one at the Coliseum Hotel, which was on the corner of Figueroa St. and W. Santa Barbara Ave. (later Martin Luther King Blvd.). This picture was taken in 1946.

  1. Does anyone take us back to life in the 1940s-1950s like Wolfie?

Maybe the Pac-12 (Pac-9?) is not Titantic Part 2 afterall

It looks as if that is the first time that Rose queen touched a football

Women and men all donning hats– that was a nice look back then

Oregon St seems to be a Pac-12 team nobody wants but I have been to their stadium and it is difficult to win there

From the article entitled “Narcissistic Obsession with Attention” in Psychology Today.

The most important person in the life of a narcissist is the narcissist.

“People high in narcissism tend to have a distinct preoccupation with being the center of attention. They are highly skilled at making themselves the star of the show, whether by writing the script themselves or hijacking another person’s scene. “

How to Handle the Need for Attention

“The best tactic for dealing with someone high in narcissism is usually not to engage with them unless you absolutely have to. Do not respond to emails, text messages, phone calls, or social media messages. Go full no-contact if you can, or at least insist on communicating via email or text messages so you have proof of what was said.”

Explain how a policy of hiring the best person for the job is racist. You brought it up. Please answer instead of being a chickensh*t.

Also, I note that when you want to really denigrate the wife of someone you don’t like on this board, presumably a white person, you say that she has a black dildo. Or you suggest that she is cheating with a black man. To you a white woman with a black man is the ultimate denigration. Is that racist? Frankly, I think you are the only truly racist person who regularly posts on this board. Like most leftists, you accuse others of doing the very thing that you do -treat black person as incapable of competing on equal terms with white people. Diagnosing and treating this condition sooner rather than later also increases the likelihood of a good outcome. Get to Atascadero State Hospital, stat!

  3. The reason USC and Ucla had to pay to leave the league was the media rights (projected) for the season following their departure. I assume they paid it. Now with a lot of teams in the league on the cusp of leaving, I expect there will be no PAC 12 in the very near future.
This begs the question, will the payment to CAL by Ucla still be necessary if CAL leaves? What about Colorado? What do they pay.
There are reports that the B1G is ready to take Oregon and Washington (by vote) today. Arizona should be making announcement later today. Nobody will pay $$ if the league dissolves.

I have never been an imposter Gabby, unlike yourself who has posted under at least 8 names including my name. You are embarrassed that you got caught posting as steveg and now you are trying to accuse others of what you do. It is called projection. It is one of the things narcistic personalities do. They also will lie and manipulate – like posting under others names.

And I posted “athletic looking”. You can tell how someone LOOKS from a photo. Why don’t you try to give it a rest. You are really embarrassing yourself. You have been exposed as a massive liar who is morally bankrupt and has no courage. I am really surprised that you would even show yourself on the blog again but a lack of social awareness is another trait of narcissism.

  5. I hope that USC is demanding that the Big 10 create an NIL standard which all the programs must abide by. No more pay for play to high school students. It must be real NIL, not fake. There should also be a limit that any one donor can give in NIL, which would prevent a single rich person from buying athletes.

    1. At least Oregon would be getting as low as 50% share, not full share.

Bohn made a big mistake in joining the Big 10. He should have found a way for USC to carve out a unique independent status for football only and then stay in the Pac-12 for the rest of the sports. He could have still demanded a full share of the Pac-12 media rights, but only played 6 games against the best TV market Pac-12 teams (Oregon, Washington, Arizona or ASU, Cal, Colorado or Utah, Stanford) and then set up games against other major rivals (Texas, Penn State, Michigan, etc) in a TV deal. This would have combined the best of both worlds, higher media revenues and more exposure in big national games plus less travel for all the other sports.

With USC playing half the games in the Pac-12, USC could have made sure the Pac-12 stayed together and Oregon would be stuck in the league.

I originally was happy to exit the Pac-12, but realize that there was a way to get what we want, without shattering the league.
