USC Morning Buzz: A Couple Camp Standouts

The first week of training camp usually favors the defense.

So it’s not surprising a USC coach told me this weekend two standouts were linebackers Mason Cobb and Eric Gentry.

“They can both give problems to an offensive line,” the coach said. “That will help our defense this fall.”

This is a position of strength for USC with Shane Lee, who started last year, also in the mix.

  • Cal coach Justin Wilcox played at Oregon and was an assistant at USC and Washington. He spoke to ESPN about the Pac-12’s demise.

“I grew up around the Pac-10, Pac-12 Conference and watching it and being fortunate to be a part of it, coached in it for a long time. It’s really sad. From what I know, it probably didn’t need to come to this but things happened along the way and really unfortunate. Really unfortunate. It’s frustrating. There’s some anger in there.”

  • Former USC defender Ashleigh Plumptre put in a great performance for Nigeria early this morning in the Women’s World Cup before her team lost on penalty kicks to England.
  • Former USC tailback Vavae Malepeai has joined the coaching staff at Stanford.

  1. “…it probably didn’t need to come to this…There’s some anger in there,” says the Cal coach.– One wonders if the Pac-12 didn’t have incompetent Commish George whether the Pac-12 finances could have been worked out. Cal has a right to be mad

As an ex-SC coach said about the Pac-12 disintegration with teams running for the $, “Very disappointing,” we may be viewing only the tip of the iceberg with future unanticipated problems to emerge

  7. Really hope that the B1G eventually allows Stanford and Cal to join. It would be ideal for scheduling purposes and I always enjoyed these traditional rivalries. Perhaps if Cal has an unexpectedly good year and shows some fan support the B1G will consider it but at this time it looks grim.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The ideal( as I see it) set up would be the western version of the B1G with 6 teams. 5 games from old PAC schools then choice of 3 OOC preseason then 2 conference home and two away. More old rivalries/tradition, less Midwest/east coast travel.

The OOC scheduling is years in advance. Done.

Question: Do you think that in the future that with the correct tv deal and exposure, that the PAC 12 could be brought back? I think with the correct leadership, and getting a tv deal equal to the Big 10, I think it could happen. However, It is a very slim chance. Or maybe SC just goes independent. Another idea.

  10. I have re-thought my previous positive comments about USC moving to the Big 10. First, if we made that move we should have demanded the right to squash Oregon from ever following us. Get it in writing.

Second, there is more than one way to skin a cat. It would have been much better for USC if they had remained in the Pac-12 for all sports except football and then forged some sort of independent alliance with the Pac-12 for football. Like Notre Dame and the ACC. Get our own media deal for $100 million a year. Book a schedule of non-conference games against teams like Texas, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, etc that would be ratings blockbusters. We should have weakened the Pac-12, but not killed it.

Allowing the Pac-12 to hire Kliavkoff was a huge mistake. The guy seems really nice and really incompetent. The Pac-12 needed a shark and we got a guppy.

Knight wants to buy a championship before he dies. i have no problems with alumni support, but Knight’s support cuts me the wrong way. he earned his money from athletes across many sports and teams, so trying to buy a championship for one specific team is like flipping the bird to all the other teams/players that wear his logo.

i just dont like a single guy writing massive checks to bribe high school athletes to show up to a crappy school, with a crappy head coach.

    1. gametv — In a way USC has what it needs for a lawsuit [not that they’ll pursue it]. At the time we joined, Big 10 representatives went on the record saying “USC & UCLA make our conference stronger and we welcome them!” The implicit premise & main selling point going in was USC & UCLA [and USC & UCLA Only] were joining an exclusive club —that was closing the doors to admission after we entered. Instead we wound up becoming part of a rather un-exclusive club that dilutes our schedule into one resembling the one we thought we were leaving behind.

However Wolf slipped into the poor PAC 4 situation. On another blog (where there is a moderator and community standards) I posted that the commissioner of the PAC 4 conference posted a fall 2024 schedule where each team will play a home and home schedule with a minimum of four non league games. In a statement he said the schedule would allow for traditional rivalry games to continue. The PAC 4 conference of leftovers.

  14. Why should USC go undefeated this year? College football players are either poor, average, consistent or elite. Depending upon the efficiency and creativity of the coaching staff, players effort on the winning side can be graded on their outcome by those four standards in college football. For example, Marvin Harrison Jr. was elite in the game against Georgia. Playing against future, high NFL draft picks as well as one of-if not the best defensive coaching staff at the Division 1 level, Harrison dominated until he was he hit with an illegal tackle. After his departure from the game, Ohio St. struggled to score another touchdown against the same defense.

This year, USC has enough elite players (like Harrison) to defeat any defense this year and some elite defensive players to compete against any offense they face. There is no excuse for Riley this year. They have two elite linebackers who can have the same impact on defense that Caleb Williams has on offense. But Grinch, ugh.

  18. GK is not going resign. He is waiting for Apple to do a new deal with the PAC4 with trying to recruit the MW schools such as Boise St, UNLV SJST Fresno St, SDST, SMU, Colorado St, Wyoming. The new WAC12. Washington St Oregon St Stanford or Cal can take turns going undefeated in conference play n lose non conference games against the Big boys. Maybe they will give the Championship team an at large bid like #12 seed with 11-1 upsetting a blue blood on the road? Breaking News: My sources got me GK’s email. I applied for a consultant position. Send resume and your proposal. GK I can become your consultant. Say we go to Apple and say we got a silent commitment from those teams mentioned above. 1. Buy 50% stake in the 12 network. 2. Stream the top non conference rivalry games of former PAC 12 teams, we charge high pay per view streaming deals with internet media like Athletic, Google, 24/7 Composite, Rivals . 3. Apple will pay each universities 8-10 M per year on a 1 year deal that rolls over like a lease. 4. GK 12 Networks will stream big events such as Olympic Sports, Movies, and College Gaming Sports Shows with a streaming game broker, from the lavish studios next to UNLV, with live streaming betting from our new technology sports center. 5. Promotions would be every fan who streams our content more than 2 hours a day will get an Apple Product depending on how many hours they stream. 6. Conclusion 10 million new subscriptions per year, 100 million from live streaming betting. That would be a game changer coming in 2026, we have to be a step ahead. GK think outside the box.
