USC Morning Buzz: Which Stat Is More Important In Recruiting?

Does it matter that USC’s recruiting class is ranked No. 25 nationally by Rivals?

Another way to look at it is by star ranking: USC’s recruits average 3.67 stars.

There are only 7 teams nationally with a better star ranking.

Of course, you can probably find stats to back up whatever argument you want. If you have a bigger class, you will probably take more three-stars because that’s what is available. For example, Michigan has 27 commitments (vs. USC’s 15) and the average star ranking is 3.63.

We’ll see where USC’s recruiting class ends up. But for Lincoln Riley, the transfer portal definitely seems to best way to go, for whatever reason. Because so far, his recruiting class rankings have been nothing special.

    1. There are 22 players on USC’s 2023 commitment list, 8 of those players are on defense and only 2 are 4 star the remaining 6 3 star.

      When you have crap coaching on defense you aren’t going to attract top tier recruits.

      And what happened with that idiot Donte Williams? Isn’t he is supposed to be a recruiting guru? So where are all these good recruits he’s supposed to attract?

      1. You know who has better rankings than Rivals? The NFL. Clark Phillips was considered the best cornerback in the Pac# last year. He was drafted in the fourth round. Mehki Blackmon was drafted in the third round after one year in the same draft. Fuck what you post, tebow. Your useless, unimportant and need this post to have a life.   2. Rivals is such a dinosaur and Wolf still thinks they are the bible of recruiting. The composite from 247 takes everyone’s ranking and averages them out. On3 ranks also. I just can’t figure out why one is better than the other except that Rivals is always a lower ranking. Perhaps Wolf is a recruiting snob, as if he went to Stanford.

  6. Woodyard from Bosco has switched from Georgia to Alabama. That’s what coaches deal with. A kid in Bellflower who change his mind based on 0 life experience about Div. 1 football who likes the attention. But Riley needs to make us happy when none of us-including Wolf, won’t put our money where our support is.

  9. The question is moot USC recruits from the portal, where proven college players reside. So stars schmars they really only count on high school. If you ask me whether coaching matters, I say yes. Riley dragged a no look defense through a whole season using his offense. If the defense steps up and makes more stops we might just look like a full team.

  10. 2024 recruiting is far from over. If SC goes 11-1 or 12-0, they will flip a lot of people before the signing day which is after the regular season and before the playoffs. LR tends to concentrate on one thing at a time. Now he is concentrating on the season. If he has a great season I still think that they will finish in the top 5 recruiting.
