I mentioned in June that Christian Roland-Wallace had been switched to nickelback and he is playing that spot in training camp.
“Whatever they need me to do I’m here to do it,” he said.
While playing nickel is probably good for the defense, let’s be real: Roland-Wallace did not transfer to USC to play nickel. So let’s see how happy he is a month into the season if things are not going as he expected.
- Lincoln Riley said the defense had the “upper hand” in the scrimmage Sunday night. Remember, defenses always have the advantage the first part of training camp because they have less to learn.
- Riley said safety Zion Branch stood out in a scrimmage with a pick six interception and forced fumble. The key is what QB did he get the pick six against?
- Defensive tackle Bear Alexander is practicing after missing the start of training camp with an injury.
- Wide receiver Tahj Washington has been out two days with an unspecified injury per Lincoln Riley.
Don’t sweat it, Scottie. Competition is always the determining criteria for each position. Roland Wallace will fall where he falls, unless he’d rather transfer again to a smaller pond (joining Kyle Ford) where he might start. Ever think that some transfers bite off more than they can chew? It does happen.

Scott is at it again, manufacturing artificial drama.

Actually Scott is doing exactly —and I mean EXACTLY —what we want him to & should do….

CRW isnt being relegated to the second string, he is the real deal and is learning all the positions.
good to hear zion is getting some notice.

Maybe CRW is just being groomed to play more than one position – he may be that valuable.

Au contraire, Scottie, the defense has plenty to learn.

Defense is ahead of every offense in any early practice because it is
easier to pin your ears back and rush like a madman than it is to figure out which player to block or working on synchronizing
the passer-catchers

Correct. The offense will be kicking their ass soon enough…

Germ spreading Wolf. Last season it was where’s Foreman? Now it’s Roland-Wallace. He’s big and can handle the wide area. Why waste him on boundary side? Plus, when stupid Utah or anyone else goes two TE strong side, he can take one of the TE or sit in quarters and play outside technique to force opponents into the LB’s. If Wright or Covington slack off then put him in and voila! Jaylin Smith goes in. I love Max Williams but he’s a free safety not a strong safety. I’m curious to hear much of the playbook the staff is making the players learn. Reports from Dan Weber claim that this is the largest support staff that USC has ever had. More comparable to an SEC program.

Good stuff, TW!
As I have said over the years, Scott’s true calling was the National Enquirer

Lincoln Reilly stated that Zion Branch made the pick 6 off Miller Moss. He then praised Moss for his composure and ability to direct the offense after the bad play. My sense is that Moss is an established No. 2 at this point and may be out Nelson next year. Reilly frequently praises him.

I expect Miller Moss to leave the program after the season.

One has access to the program, the other piggybacks off third party sources!
“A coach said”… Sound familiar?

Roland Wallace has been described by Riley as being able to play anywhere in the defensive backfield. If that is the case they know what he can do at corner, or even safety, but want him comfortable at the nickle position. Best way to do that is to practice there. They also want Jackson with his speed on the field also. Hopefully these players are willing to do what is best for the team, not just themselves. Ya we will see how happy he is after a few wins. As always, a negative reach by Wolf.
