Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith announced he will retire on June 30, 2024.
Why does that matter to USC?
Look at some of the athletic directors who worked for Smith at Ohio State:
Pat Chun, Washington State
Heather Lyke, Pitt
Martin Jarmond, UCLA
Chun and Lyke are getting strong consideration for the USC athletic director’s job. USC was interested in Jarmond before it hired Mike Bohn.
Would someone turn down the USC job in hopes of landing the Ohio State job? It’s considered a plum job in the industry and Smith wields a lot of power in the Big Ten and NCAA.
The Buckeyes won 32 NCAA titles under Smith and field 33 sports teams. By comparison, USC fields 21.
At the very least, USC better vet someone like Chun or Lyke and ask if they would leave in a year if Ohio State offered them a job?

Chun has no interest in USC since they won’t pay him what he’s asking for and give him the autonomy he needs. It really is a matter of Folt not wanting someone who can surpass her. Maybe this Lyle person is more to her liking but if she’s any type of popular then she won’t get the job either. Don’t be surprised if Barbour steals the position.
