USC Morning Buzz: Another Area Of Contention

I identified the offensive line as an area of inconsistency during training camp.

Here’s another one: The secondary.

“They have good days and not-so-good days,” a source said.

The safeties are basically the same trio from last season: Caleb Bullock, Bryson Shaw and Max Williams. So we know what we have there.

It’s the cornerback position that has been a bigger point of contention. The new go-to corner is Ceyair Wright. The other spot is being contested by Domani Jackson and Jacobe Covington. The nickel back is Christian Roland-Wallace.

This is a downgrade from a year ago when Mekhi Blackmon was the top corner. Frankly, Wright is inconsistent while Jackson is completely unproven and has yet to play a full season. Covington might start but he has three career starts so he’s also a little bit of a question mark.

Roland-Wallace is reluctantly playing nickel. He has more experience than all the other corners combined. But I said from Day 1 he was not a savior and we are seeing that with the move to nickel. If he were blowing the coaches away, he would be at corner.

Ask yourself this: USC’s high-end aspirations are to be make the College Football Playoff. Does this sound like a College Football Playoff secondary?

  1. As the front seven goes, so goes the secondary. I believe (my opinion) the secondary won’t have to cover as long (DL pressure) and quarterbacks won’t have the luxury of time, as they did last year.

  2. Where does Wolf get his information. How would he know how consistent Ceyair Wright has been. Even the “Fan Boys” don’t get to see enough practice to make those judgements. As the secondary has been described at all the other sites, they are a playoff quality backfield, although nobody but CALEN Bullock is locked in to a position. Everybody has rough days at practice, even the Heisman winner. Should we say he is not playoff QB? San Jose St will finally give us a picture of what we have and what we are.

    1. Scott has a direct line to towel boy who speaks with ground crew guy who fixed a sprinkler during practice. Notice besides Caleb, Scott has called out all position groups so later when one falters he can say I told you so.

      1. If Wolf could, he’d criticize Caleb by being snarky. It’s not like he’s hasn’t tried.
As for the secondary? No mention of Zion Branch lets me know it’s “I hate Donte Williams and I will expose him” since Wolf has nothing else to offer. The source (sic) claims they have good days. Sounds like the same thing Georgia went through last year.

  3. The SC offense is what will carry this team; how far is to be determined (TBD)
Defenses across the country are surrendering 30 to 50 points per game,
so it doesn’t have to be perfect as long as it keeps the opposition closer to 30 than 50

  4. Scott omitted Zion Branch, the redshirt freshman. Reilly and several players have singled him out as one of the break-out players in fall camp. Reilly has also stated that contrary to Scott’s assertion, Wright has become much more consistent in his play and has made several big plays in both spring and fall practice. He is the most improved player in the secondary. And in response to “does this sound like a College Football Playoff secondary?”, Yes. Wright, Jackson, and Covington, all have the speed and length to play big time college football and if they develop over the next two years will be NFL draft choices. No reason to write these guys off at this point.

  6. There is not a secondary in college football that wouldn’t have some “not-so-good days” going up against the best QB in college football and perhaps the second best group of WRs in college football.

  7. Scott: I identified the offensive line as an area of inconsistency during training camp while sitting on the couch eating a box of stale donuts and wearing my favorite soiled soccer jersey. I am a mess!

Scott has “the coach” voice in his head writing for him, pathetic. I can’t recall the last time Scott posted anything positive about the football team. Mr. Razzie award winner!

PS…. Branch has been mentioned as a standout on defense, but Scott conveniently omits him to fit his negative agenda. We are not worthy to have access to such top-notch reporting

    1. I’d say that is a LOT of good news. Though it is hard to believe that all we can come up with is $700 per person, particularly when state and local government failed them so badly in not clearing the grasslands and having the sirens operative.

  8. Solomon Byrd claims the defense will be more sophisticated and not so easy to figure out. I hope he’s right. Another thing, Roland-Wallace is being moved around. That tells me they want him on the field at all times to avoid mismatches that can occur with small DB on tall receivers. Why stick him on one side of the field when faster players can handle that?

    1. Caleb Williams threw for 415 yards against Arizona with Roland-Williams as the top cover corner at home against the Trojans. Two receivers went for over 1110+ yards even though Jordan Addison wasn’t available. Yes, defense is eleven players but if he’s in the program and he’s not showing the ability to stay with guys like his former teammate at Arizona, why not put him inside with support as opposed to keeping him on an island where there is less support? He timed at 4.5 seconds in the 40 yard dash coming out of Palmdale before attending Arizona. It makes sense to limit his exposure. He’s probably a safety but they have plenty of safeties this year.

      I hope that helps.

  9. Did Scott tryout for the role of Oscar Maddison in the Odd Couple? I swear he’s never met a squad he liked. One of the biggest reasons he’s not writing for publications is his over the top hatred for his job. People just don’t relate to his style.
“Americans love a winner, and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.” – George C. Scott
In Wolf’s old paper there is an article about Ceyair Wright putting more into his game this summer partly because of the SAG strike, if Scott had written it, it would have been about Wright being as bad an actor as he is a ball player.
Come to think of it, Oscar Maddison might be too nice, J. Jonah Jameson is more his style if USC ever recruits Peter Parker Scott will have a field day.

The indictment unsealed Monday night was identical to the leaked charging docs posted to the Fulton County clerk’s website. So you can stop you lies.

  10. Scooter,

There is nothing you can do about it unless you become the dcordinator or db coach. We now know that SC needs a better db coach. The question is, will SC need a better decordinator. After the season, that question will be answered.

  13. Let me say this Mr. Wolfe, you have to watch Morrisett daily sounds n sights to get inside information. Do they kick you out of practice warm ups when the team is stretching n doing nothing? It seems to me that’s the case from what players n coaches say is different what u r reporting? I know what I hear from others. The defense is coming along we have time to resolve both sides. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

  15. the secondary is up against the deepest receiver group in the nation. you didnt even mention zion branch, who will probably take over a safety position, or Christian Pierce, who is making a big impression.

USC has the first 6 games to just keep competing internally before they play a real opponent. by that time, Max Williams might really not be playing much and Wright might not be on the field either. Covington and Domani and CRW as nickel and Bullock and Branch as safety.

The d-line is going to be extremely effective, the linebackers are going to be very good. This D will be good, not perfect, but very good.

  16. No mention of Zion Branch in this article while discussing the secondary is crazy. Lincoln Riley stated that Zion is having a breakout performance in camp, but he is omitted from this article without a single mention. How do you forget to talk about Zion and what is is bringing to the table in camp?
