USC Notes: A Freshman WR Finally Gets A Mention

USC coach Lincoln Riley has a habit of loving every freshman in training camp.

I’ve been curious when he would speak about wide receiver Makai Lemon, because five-star Zacariah Branch tends to get most of the publicity for the new receivers.

“He’s had an awesome camp,” Riley said. “We’ve been able to move him around position wise. He’s handled it well mentally, stayed healthy. He’s a dynamic playmaker. I don’t know what’s being said on the outside but he’s not ever overshadowed on this field.”

One of the reasons I’ve been curious is because ex-Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson said last season he was more concerned about facing Lemon than Branch.

  • USC is ranked No. 6 in the Football Writers’ Assn. of America preseason poll. The groupthink that has the Trojans No. 6 in every poll is quite a thing.
  • USC women’s soccer hosts Michigan in its season-opener Thursday at 3 p.m. Next season they will be conference opponents.

  1. Hey wolfman, Branch was clearly the best player on the field that night against Mater Dei, I was there and watched Branch shake and bake all night long. Speaking the truth about Branch would fuck up your whole narrative. Riley has said numerous times you’re not allowed at practices, sound familiar?

  2. No one has asked about Makai Lemon because he was hurt in the spring and shut down. Now that he’s healthy, somebody finally asked about Lemon. This idea that a conspiracy is going on or a grand jury needs to be convened about Lemon is pointless, Wolf. Lemon isn’t getting the attention that the #1 receiver in the 2023 class has created. Kinda happens all the time. Why not say: Lemon can have a bigger impact than Branch this year?

      4. Mikayla Lemon is too small. She should have gone to Harbor City Community College and bulked up on some Mexican food in the area before signing on to try and play with the big boys or in USC’s case…Ladies of Troy.

        Mikayla Lemon will turn out to be a lemon, she won’t see the field. From the looks of her you can tell she has a hang nail problem. Looks a little light on her feet if you know what I mean.

        She’ll hit the portal before the end of the year is out.

  3. All 4 wide receivers look special on film. And Reilly has complimented all of them during his interviews. But Branch is clearly special. The receiver coach, Simmons, can’t help but light up when he talks about him. Branch reminds me of DeSean Jackson, R. Jay Soward, and Adoree Jackson but he is actually faster and has better precision cuts and hands than all of these guys. I don’t know how anyone covers this guy. He may prove to be better than his great uncle, Cliff Branch of the Raiders, a hall of famer and that is saying something.

    1. Plow, all bantering aside, that was a really good take on Branch. I mentioned the other day about a text message Brent Browner, Bishop Gorman’s football coach, received from Zach’s dad. The message basically said, Zach has been toying with the secondary at practice.

      I also heard from a podcast, that Zach’s punt-returning skills are reminiscent of Adoree’s only better. The key to returning is ball safety. Hope Zach is reliable

      1. Gabby: I hope the freshman Zach Branch did not say “I am toying with these guys.” But if he did, it was meant to be a private conversation with his father. This is the kind of thing that can alienate a freshman or anyone else from his coaches and teammates. If you were truly a USC fan, you would not have posted it on the internet. It is a destructive comment. I can imagine a defensive back going head hunting after a comment like that.

You say that the father was just being proud that his son is doing well. That is not the point. You, not the father, posted on the internet that Zach was talking trash about his teammates. You don’t do that especially if you are a freshman. Your post may result in dissension among teammates. Nobody whose played football or any team sport would argue against that point. Why would a USC fan do such a thing?

  12. Lemon will be a factor next year he might redshirt, I believe because he has chemistry with Nelson. He will become Nelson’s security blanket along with Duece, Branch Lane, Brown next year. We are set up for year’s for this position.
