USC To Hire Washington Athletic Director Jen Cohen

USC will announce Jen Cohen as its new athletic director, according to Pete Thamel.

Cohen has been athletic director at Washington since 2016.

It’s not surprising USC hired a woman. There’s been a feeling at USC that Carol Folt wanted to hire a woman, especially after the problems with Mike Bohn. Cohen is a safe choice. She doesn’t have any skeletons and knows the landscape. She’s also a member of the College Football Playoff committee.

The plus: Cohen hired Kalen DeBoer, who went 11-2 last season and looks like a masterful hire.

The less plus: She also hired Jimmy Lake as football coach, who imploded in two seasons. She hired Mike Hopkins as basketball coach, who has sputtered the past four seasons.

It’s hard to say if she wanted to keep Hopkins or was forced to because of budget issues. She won’t face those problems at USC.

REACTION: This is a professional hire. Cohen was a popular athletic director in Seattle. She actually talked to constituents and the media with ease, which is something USC athletic directors never seem to be great at, including Coach Bohn, who had that forced enthusiasm and didn’t follow through.

She’s also done more with less. Washington reportedly had to take a loan from the Big Ten against future earnings to pay for the increased travel costs coming in 2024.

USC will feel like a dream in that respect with its resources.

And if Lincoln Riley leaves, now we know who will be considered a strong candidate: Coach DeBoer!

    I can’t fault her for the Jimmy Lake hire, he was recommended strongly by Chris Petersen who knew Lake as well as anyone.

    It was pretty glowing, all AD’s have fuck up hires, but she isn’t like the last 4 AD’s that USC had who couldn’t be bothered with the non mega donors, she has a personality and will actually talk to the hoi polloi

We need $$$$ like that of Oregon TAMU big donors.     I think she is a medicore hire at best. It is a woke and political crapness hire. She is equal to haden in hiring a football coach and getting ride of him in a couple of years. Safe hire for the Woke Crowd. Good luck SC. Please just don’t change the fight song from Fight On to Kumiba. Please keep something that reminds us of Ol’ SC.

  17. Probably a good solid hire. Maybe not a visionary? Not sure. She is on the CFP committee, so that is good enough for me. And the Kalen hire was a masterstroke.

    Just because she is a female doesnt make this a woke hire. Pretty sure she is better than Bohn.

    2. Agree Gametv. Hiring Kalen DeBoer was a gutsy and masterful move. Nothing woke about it. Haden didn’t have the guts to make this kind of hire. I think she will do a good job. Hope Folt stays out of her way.

      1. I’m not a Bohn hater, but I think he isnt good at running a really tight organization. Let’s be honest, I could probably have recruited Riley to USC, it is the best job in college football if you have any vision to see the future. So getting Riley was great, but not something that only Bohn could have done.

        I think this new AD probably has more respect in the college football world and that is what you want going forward as it changes. We want USC to be the program that wins title after title and creates the future vision for college sports. The fact that she is on the CFP committee tells me alot.

      1. No but Haden’s family got about one million a year for managing a charitable trust by a USC donor that was suppose to benefit impoverished students. It’s hard to beat that for sleaziness.

        More than that, can she be hell bent on SC like Mike Garrett? Iron Mike I would take back in a second. He bleeds Cardinal and Gold. All I know is that the new AD might bleed red and gold, the Arcadia Apache colors. Will she go to bat with the ncaa for SC? Will she fall on the sword like Marv Goux? Or does she say just words to make herself sound like a Trojan? I want to know.

  19. I havent liked USC football hype videos in the past, too much glitz, but I really like the latest video – The Longer it Goes the Better We Get.

    So I’m thinking of placing a bet on USC to win the CFP. Should I bet $100, $1,000 or $10,000?

    At a 16 times payout, I think the odds are going to get much less profitable once they blow out a few teams and the defense looks good.

  23. She’s a safe hire, plain and simple. She’ll toll the line and won’t make waves. After everything that we heard about Bohn, what choice did they have? Let’s give her a shot and see what she can do. Her first major hire will be the tell.
