I wanted to try and avoid talking about the defense today but . . . impossible.
Lincoln Riley was asked about the cornerbacks yesterday and the first guy he highlighted was Christian Roland-Wallace, who didn’t even start and didn’t play much until the end of the game. But he graded out the best among the corners.
If I’m Riley, I’m asking Donte Williams why Roland-Wallace didn’t start or play more? I seriously doubt Riley decides who plays in the games.
When Roland-Wallace transferred from Arizona, I said he would be the best cornerback. He doesn’t make a lot of plays but he doesn’t get beat.
Let’s see if the starting lineup changes for the Nevada game.

It really isnt so difficult to understand that USC was using that game as a scrimmage to test out some players and reward some players for working hard during camp, but that doesnt mean they will actually be starters once the real competition comes.
The unique nature of the schedule allows USC a while to make these type of changes.
CRW will be on the field all the time he is healthy after the sixth game. I think there will be other changes as well.

USC with perhaps the best group of WRs in the country. Watching the ’22 spring game, I thought that Mario Williams was going to be the star, as he is so quick and runs sharp routes – but now there are several guys who are as quick or quicker, or who run sharper routes than him.

Regarding O-line: last year, Justin Dedich graded significantly above NFL grade pass blocking, Jonah Monheim was borderline NFL, Michael Targquin was a bit below NFL level, but Pregnon and Murphy are way below. Those guys need to get better quickly.

I only saw the passing grades. Pregnon graded 70.5 in pass blocking last year, NFL-level grade is 85. Pregnon may well be an effective run blocker (though having him in might telegraph the play to the opposing D…).

The secondary can change who starts and who finishes game, Mr. Wolf. It’s based on the defensive coaches but the head coach has the last say. It’s kinda his right because he not only makes the most money but he is the one most responsible to the team for losses. Saying that Riley has no say in the matter is a factual lie. He deferred too much last year and now he sees the same issues have still occurred so he’s become more assertive as his mentor Bob Stoops has told him to. How do I know they talk? Look at how the first team defense was put back in after the onside kick recovery.

Hopefully they correct the mistakes by having a LB rush inside Bear because he takes up 2 people. Then have the RE set the edge so when the QB runs the RE or LB will be able to corral the QB. Grinchy n Manning think having them speed rushing will get to the QB. They always out of position because they don’t teach them to rush with control. That what I see along with not using NFL type stunts to disrupt and collapse the pocket instead of giving up lanes for the QB to escape. I might not be a college coach but I do know how we can fix our defense by a collaborate effort by the the coaches to put their players in the best to play championship elite defense.
