Raleek Brown spent part of today’s practice on the scout team.
Lincoln Riley addressed it after practice: “That was just our decision today as coaches. Raleek’s a really good player but there’s a lot of really good players here. The margins are really, really thin between a lot of guys.
“If I start going down the names of guys I’ve had play reps on the scout team, there’s quite a few that are big-time trophy winners and NFL players. Everybody’s process is different, especially when you’re making a position change.”
REACTION: So what did Riley see wrong with Brown at tailback? I mentioned his blocking was an issue last year. Riley didn’t like something, hence the “position change.”
There’s nothing wrong with some time on the scout team. But when it’s a Mater Dei guy who was a five-star . . . even if he spent just one season at Mater Dei you know those guys don’t have a lot of patience. So this will be a situation to monitor.

They should try a play where (on the kickoff return) Branch takes the kick and heads right or left and then hands it off to Brown who goes in the other direction. The other teams will be focusing big on Branch and SC has another one who can take it to the house(Brown). They should try that play.

Last season, Brown was a liability when it came to blocking and was always running east/west trying to beat a defender to the edge, which often ended in a negative play.
With Zach, we have a bigger, stronger, faster version of Brown. He has exceptional route-running ability with the gift of creating separation. I don’t know what other player in college to compare him to regarding the kick return skills.
Glad he plays for us and not against us!

If you watch some of his long runs on YouTube, he seems to have a 6th sense that allows him to stay patient and survey angles only a guy with his acceleration could take advantage of.

Thats why the portal exists. Nothing personal. Brown and USC weren’t a good fit. Hopefully, he can help UCLA become more exciting and get more fans than AYSO games at Paul Revere Middle School.
