The ACC has voted to extend invitations to Cal, Stanford and SMU. The travel for sports other than football is going to be awful. Football-only conferences make more sense.
- I know it’s easy to bash the Pac-12 but one of their jobs is to remind schools that players were suspended for the first half of their season opener if they were ejected in the final game of last season. It doesn’t appear they contacted Arizona or USC until the media pointed it out that players were supposed to be suspended.
Is the Pac-12 just mailing it in now that it’s about to dissolve?
- What’s the Coliseum record attendance for a USC game? The 1947 USC-Notre Dame game drew 104,953, the highest attendance for a football game at the historic stadium. The No. 1-ranked Fighting Irish defeated the No. 3-ranked Trojans, 38-7, and went on to win the National Championship.
- Los Angeles High School played its first home game Thursday since 2021 after finally getting temporary bleachers at its football stadium. The Romans defeated Hawkins, 22-0.
Maybe some alumni like Dustin Hoffman, George Takei or Larry Allen can donate some money to get the stadium situation sorted out for next season.
And now for some history:
- Here’s a photo from the 1980 Rose Bowl. This pass did not result in a touchdown because Kevin Williams caught the only TD pass for USC in the game.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
- Danny Reece (No. 46) is another of a long list of underappreciated Trojans. He made plays consistently in his career, which sounds basic until you look at his career.
Imagine a cornerback at USC today having 18 career interceptions. Reece is No. 2 all-time in interceptions behind only Artimus Parker (20). He probably should have been an All-American but never got selected.
If the interceptions were not enough, he was a dangerous punt returner. Reece led the Pac-8 in punt returns in 1975 with 409 yards in 26 returns. He led the NFL in punt returns in 1976 and 1980. And he scored the first touchdown in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a fumble return.
His brother, Severn, played wide receiver at UCLA and they faced each other in the 1975 Crosstown Rivalry. Both brothers played at Banning High School in Wilmington.
STARLETS AT USC
- The ability of USC to draw actresses to campus had to be unrivaled during Hollywood’s Golden Age. I’ve previously written about Linda Darnell’s visits. Here’s Rita Moreno in front of Mudd Hall to promote a charity dance in 1954 presented by the Tau Delta Phi fraternity. Moreno even visited the Daily Trojan on the fourth floor of the Student Union to promote the dance.
Whoever sold the most bids to the dance could choose who would be Moreno’s date. Amazing. Bids were $3, which is about $34 today.
“I’ve always wanted to know what it would feel to go out with a college man,” Moreno joked during her visit. “Now I’ll know. They say they are a different species.”
The entertainment included band leader Harry James, singer Vic Damone, drummer Buddy Rich and Moreno. This stuff simply doesn’t happen anymore.
There are more than just grainy newspaper photos of Moreno from 1954 so here are a couple. It should be noted this was the year she started an eight-year on-and-off relationship with Marlon Brando.
- Four years earlier, former USC student-turned-actress Mari Blanchard was the “date” students competed to escort to the dance. Blanchard also sang with Les Brown and his orchestra at the event.
- It’s the USC sophomores (left) vs. the freshmen in the annual pushball contest at Bovard Field in 1955. The freshmen won, 20-0. Like I say, it was a different world.
- John Wayne with the USC band for a publicity shot for the 1977 TV special “Super Night at the Super Bowl.”
BEAUTY QUEENS, BANQUETS AND LUNCHEONS
- Susan Wright was named Helen of Troy in 1964. Next to her is yell king Tom Lailey and in the back, of course, are Richard Saukko and Traveler. Saukko and Traveler are what makes this picture worth running.
- It’s the Rose Bowl luncheon on Dec. 23, 1957 with coaching legends Red Sanders of UCLA (left), Len Casanova of Oregon and Woody Hayes of Ohio State (right). Rose Queen Trudy Eleanor Wood is seated.
The most surprising aspect of the picture is it caught Hayes actually smiling. The least surprising is Sanders capturing the attention of the Rose Queen.
John McKay was an assistant coach to Casanova at Oregon before he went to USC. John Robinson played for Casanova and then was his assistant before going to USC.
Oregon was known as the Webfoots, not the Ducks, in this era.
- USC All-American Pete Adams (77) leaves the field after the Trojans defeated Notre Dame, 28-14, in 1971. The Notre Dame player is defensive back Mike Crotty, whose father played at Notre Dame under Knute Rockne.

On paper, it sounds taxing, but physically doing it on a repeated basis is mental torture. What happened to the concept of education first. I guess when you reach the point of desperation the abnormal becomes normal. The fan base also takes a hit over travel issues.

My daughter has a friend who was going to Berkeley on an athletic scholarship, but is now looking for other schools because of the Pac-12 meltdown. Not sure, but seems like West Coast schools are going to be cutting back on a bunch of the non-revenue sports and will have a hard time getting athletes.
What a mess! I was glad USC got out of the Pac-12, but honestly, if the other Pac-12 presidents were not a bunch of morons, this would have never needed to happen.
