Discuss The USC-Nevada Game/My Reaction

Well, that went exactly as planned. Nevada was pretty awful and USC is unlikely to have another game this easy the rest of the season.

A lot of people got to play and make plays. Everyone will be happy. The fanboy media will be happy.

The fans will be happy. USC had the audacity to say the crowd was 62,916.

Now to get serious: I’m surprised USC’s lack of physicality. The program is in Year 2 under the strength training of Lincoln Riley and I don’t see much in terms of physical play, especially on the lines. This is something that would matter against Notre Dame and Utah. Not Nevada or San Jose State.

When did Mason Cobb get hurt? Was it a late-in-the-week injury? It’s a problem if Cobb and Eric Gentry can’t stay healthy. I don’t care how good Tackett Curtis is going to be, right now he tends to overpursue plays and his targeting penalty was a poor decision.

The secondary looked unimpressive. Domani Jackson gave up a TD and got burned on another play but the pass was incomplete. Same thing happened with Ceyair Wright.

And I can’t say the offensive line improved much other than it played a bad team. Caleb Williams was still running for his life a few times.

USC needs to be tested now after two gimme games. But when will that test occur? Saturday against Stanford? Let’s see.

Also, what will Riley say about Raleek Brown?

  2. Criticism of the secondary is deserved. I cringe when the ball is thrown on Domani’s side. D-line and LBs looked better.

Nevada rushed the ball 38 times, for 49 yards, their longest rush was 11 yards.

USC offense generated 670 yards, including 20 rushes for 215 yards. Sounds like the physicality wasn’t nearly as bad as Scottie makes it out to be.

You can’t put much into what Wolf writes, because he doesn’t pretend that USC is the greatest since sliced bread like my dumb Azz does..😂 By Wednesday we will get the report of a conversation he had with a “coach” from somewhere embracing all of Wolf’s negative viewpoints. Wolf needs to pretend like I do, because I believe USC is a tough physical team, that would beat Georgia, and Alabama. I’m the biggest Azz Lick Fanboy in the southland 😂😂.

      4. sorry, but I am seeing the same game as Wolf. this wasnt a team that should get 350 yards or put pressure on caleb.

i can bet that Henson is not satisfied with the right side of the offensive line. Monheim and Dedich are great, and I think Pregnon is going to be great by later in the year, but those two veterans, Tarquin and Kingston get beat alot or allow the pocket to collapse on Caleb.

The big question is whether Paige can push for first team reps as left tackle and allow Monheim to shift back to right tackle. I think the right side of the line has one more week to prove themselves or things get shaken up.

The defensive secondary is a mess. Grinch and Donte need to be fired.

And why are they making such a big deal about Curtis when Davis seems to be pretty fast as a linebacker? Curtis might be great in the future, but he isnt great right now.

100% in agreement with you. Well said. The kid was hitting 75mph fastballs in high school, and now he’s facing 95 mph fastballs. His processing ability is not yet at the 95mph level…..Davis is more mentally prepared with better closing speed.

Tackett has taken the most snaps at LB, perhaps Riley is willing to overlook his shortcomings in flavor of game experience to advance his development, while a kid like Davis, IMO, should be the one getting more snaps.

  3. It’s obvious Scott didn’t watch the game. He was too busy counting empty seats….

Scott is completely wrong about Tackett. The kid is solid at the point of attack, but his preceding speeding is in question. This means he’s late on his reading which actually leads to “under-pursing”. He’s not ready to play inside/out. A 43 defense with Tackett on the boundary side would benefit him better

Jackson keeps getting tuned due to bad technique. The kid struggles to stay on the hip of the receiver. Perhaps he lost a step due to the ACL injury.

Lloyd is looking like the back we thought he was. I love Travis, but Lloyd is better. Duce has deceptive speed. Foreman was getting pushed around. Game ball for Shame Lee led the team in tackles with 10, including a sack.

Time to listen to Su’a Cravens!

    2. You don’t play three linebackers in today’s college football. Tackett needs to simplify his reads and stop playing with his eyes. He’s immature. When he has one read with the ball in front of him, he’s solid. But football is never that simple all the time.

    3. Agree that Lee had a great game, hope he keeps it up.

Not sure I agree about Tackett, I think he needs more time in the program before he plays alot. I would rather see Raesjon get more experience.

  7. Take away 2 big big plays, and they were solid but until the DL can make Qb’s make hurry throws, then it keeps DB on a island in Grinchy schemes. On every play it seems like somebody is in the wrong position and to the races. Let’s get that fixed for Stanford. Grinchy start on Monday send a reminder of all your audibles for film test. Who ever scores the highest on that test. That is who you start for Stanford.

    1. Eric…if Jackson can’t keep up with these pedestrian receivers he’s faced the last two games, what’s it going to look like when he faces future NFL receivers down the road. He should be dominating if he’s as good as you say….just saying

We might have the best offense in college football. But with the current state of our defense. The Washington, Oregon, and ND look like games we would go in as the underdogs

      1. Gabby when we get to those games against Washington Oregon Utah ND, we should be a better team. We do have the best offense. We certainly have multiple big playmakers. Jackson will get better this is just his second start. Come on Gabby you know who is his position coach is. ? DC Grinchy is not helping the players by moving them around 3 seconds before the SNAP.

Much to Clown U’s future distress, UCLA has settled on Dante Moore as it’s #1 QB. I couldn’t be happier.

The Pac 12 is really good this year UCLA will be close to the bottom in the standings even Colorado is better this year. My question is why a young talented player like Donte Moore would even come to such a lousy football program at UCLA and play in front of 10,000 fans at best where no one cares. Once Chip gets fired at the end of this season Moore will transfer to a real football program where he could win a Heisman not a basketball school, and even that is fading also.

  10. People, Grinch just needs to run more zone coverage. Hopefully, he’ll understand that his two best corners are Roland-Wallace and Covington and use them accordingly. Wright and Jackson need safety help to the inside. They don’t know how to stay level or at least inside the side pocket of receivers. At least bump at the scrimmage to dislodge and slow receivers down! I don’t understand the free release stuff.

    1. TW, Grinchy is not smart. I don’t know y he doesn’t play press coverage, if you have big corners you use hands legally, he doesn’t stunt his lineman to get more pressure on the QB’S. Yeah we got 5 sacks, 10 TFL can we do that against the Dogs Quacks, Domers n Utes . If we can keep improving our players we can get closer to getting to our goal.

  11. The defense looked better. Our backup quarterback got quality time playing time. Tacket Curtis was robbed by the refs. The accidental head bumping was hardly targeting because it lacked intent to injure. Unfortunately refs don’t have to consider intention. I think Curtis’s being in the game is just to give him game time experience. The kid has a motor but he wastes gas quite often.
I finally saw what everyone is complaining about. The PAC 12 channel coverage is just slightly better than a cell phone video. During the broadcast they had a live camera roaming the campus.

    1. I havent really watched closely enough, but the times I noticed him, he is really solid. It is possible that Covington and CRW are the corners once we hit the real teams later in the season. Maybe they just used these early games to try to build some competition from Domani and Ceyair.

      1. Possibly gametv, but they are going to keep rotating the DB’s because they have to have fresh bodies. Covington does play the right way. I can see him playing more once we get to the brutal 2nd half of our schedule. It would help our backend if our DL can collapse the pocket better, n make QB uncomfortable.

  13. Oh man, don’t even get me started on Oregon State, who’s usually the laughing stock of the Pac-12 when it comes to defense, somehow managed to lock down San Jose State. They held them to 17 points, 56 yards rushing, and 223 yards passing. Let that sink in for a moment. This is a defense that usually couldn’t stop a jogger, let alone a college offense, and they made San Jose State look like a Pop Warner team.

What does that say about our defense? I’ll tell you what it says: it’s embarrassing!

If Oregon State’s defense can contain an offense that rolled all over us, then what are we even doing? San Jose State ran and passed for double the yards on us compared to what they did against Oregon State. We’re still floundering in the swamp of mediocrity.

We all observed that our defense was a laughing stock last year, we tried to orient our selves toward improvement, decided to change something, and then acted on it, but Grinch just sucks – 3rd and 22!

If this were us against Oregon State, we’d be the team giving up double the stats. I expected to not be worse than Oregon State, and yet here we are.

You know what kills me? That line the coaching staff keeps trotting out: “We’re two plays away from…” Two plays away from what? Glory? Victory? Nah, more like two plays away from having fans tear their hair out. It’s the football equivalent of saying “I’m two beers away from making sense.” It’s ridiculous!

You wanna be a hero as a quarterback? Play against Grinch’s defense. You’ll look like Michael Vick in his prime.

We need a D coordinator that knows defense is half the game? When the defense stinks this bad, it affects everyone. The offense has to carry the weight, special teams are demoralized, and the fans are reconsidering their life choices. The cost of keeping Grinch far outweighs any potential benefit.

So, it’s painfully clear we have zero excuses. What are we doing, running a charity for opposing offenses? Time for a serious overhaul, starting with Mr. “Two Plays Away” Alex Grinch.

    The defense rests, Your Honor—literally!
