USC Sunday Buzz: It’s Now Or Never With Caleb Williams

This is why I say USC needs to play with a sense of urgency this season.

You won’t have this next season. Or maybe ever again.

  • Nevada’s really gotten worse since former coach Jay Norvell left and was replaced by Ken Wilson.
  • This was an odd statement by Lincoln Riley last night. Instead of just criticizing the Pac-12 for not informing USC that Christian Roland-Wallace needed to sit out a half after being ejected in the final game last season, Riley said, “We’re going to make sure his reputation stays intact.”

Roland-Wallace got ejected, like four other players in that Arizona-Arizona State game, and got suspended. No big deal. It happens. Most people could care less.

There’s no damage to Roland-Wallace’s reputation. Riley just made it worse by blowing it out of proportion. With his director of operations, Clarke Stroud, standing next to the stage, for some unknown reason.

  1. I got it. Wolf, since your opinion is low limited to how you feel, you want to Lord it over people with a higher stature than yourself. That’s how he feels. LET IT GO.

    1. I know I’m the biggest Lincoln Riley Cock Sucker, but I really do believe that USC is the biggest strongest team in college football. I’m pretty sure they’ll win a National Championship this year. I know more about the program then anyone else in the whole wide world

  2. Roscoe Brown, Brown’s father, said they think it’s in Raleek’s best interest to redshirt — a sentiment that was first reported by USCFootball.com. When asked by The Athletic on Friday if his son intends to transfer, Roscoe Brown said: “We haven’t even got that far yet.”

Roscoe Brown said they haven’t spoken to Riley about the move yet but made their desire to redshirt known to inside receivers coach Luke Huard. The staff is trying to get Brown not to redshirt, his father said.

    1. As talented as Raleek Brown is, he really doesn’t have a position. He is too small and frail to be an every down running back and not physical enough to be a premier receiver. I hope he can find his nitch somewhere.

  3. It’s sad what teams have come to in scheduling opponents.

I looked at ucla’s schedule from 1970 to 1980, what a schedule of non conference games, just some great teams and outstanding matchups, same for USC. Now, it’s Coastal Carolina, NC Central, SJSU and Nevada and Oregon should be fucking ashamed of themselves for scheduling Portland St ( who probably should drop football ) and then trying to get to 100 points.

  4. Lincoln is “going serious” and “somber” cuz he knows what the last half of the season looks like [all top 25 teams] and he knows he has to cut the Happy Talk to make it through…..
btw, according to bruin social media only 19,000 UCLA fans ACTUALLY in the stands for their home opener……

    1. All 19,000 ( Texas high schools draw more fans ) got to personally see those pretty gold shoes and the matching gold facemasks, what style !

Somewhere the Big 10 commish is saying ” How much fucking money are schools going to lose going to play at ucla ? Can we axe them and get Fresno St instead ? “

    2. When you factor in that everyone was seated 6ft from one another and wearing masks, you can only sell 19,000 seats Michael. So, it was a sellout crowd. It was those rebellious Chanticleer fans that would not social distance or wear their masks!

  5. Re the coolness Lincoln is showing at post game pressers:
It’s possible that —while Caleb now sees his relationship with Lincoln as a that of two equals —- Lincoln needs to demonstrate who’s boss….

    1. Riley is seeing the future without Caleb, and it’s bleak. I for one would not be the least bit surprised if Riley bolted after this year, and I wouldn’t care, guy has no concept of what it takes to be a national contender, you HAVE TO PLAY DEFENSE AND HAVE STRONG OL & DL’s AND COMPENENT COACHES NOT ASS KISSERS.

      1. I think all of you are crazy to believe that Riley cant build an offense around another talented QB.

Caleb is uniquely good at some things, but honestly if you understand that clip of the touchdown throw above, he only needed to scramble because he didnt see Rice open early in the play.

Caleb is forced to run because he is not making the reads on open receivers. He is an incredible scrambler and has a great arm, but he is far from perfect.

      2. Russell Wilson used to hang on to the ball forever too — abundantly confident he’d save the play —and often wound up getting sacked when he didn’t have to…

  6. Roland-Wallace should have known about his suspension and he should have been telling his coaches. Period. I don’t pass it on to anybody else.
Now back to the game – the secondary made some mistakes, eh really bad mistakes. I don’t care about who gets the blame. Blame is unproductive. Get it together and go forward. Period.
As far as the PAC-12 landscape – it just demonstrated how incredibly incompetent the PAC-12 network and media people are! Colorado has peaked the interest in their program with a terrific performance and their charismatic coach. A brilliant performance by their QB, and also a wonderful bona fide two way player who played 129 snaps. Couple that with the huge upset of #17 TCU and it was a game for the ages.
But the PAC-12 media folks didn’t know what they had in Colorado. Just like they didn’t know how important USC was to their conference. The PAC-12 had arguably the most watchable games this weekend and yet their media deals and their entire conference is moot.

    1. Fans were coming up to Donte Williams after the game and asking if he’d tell the d-backs to stop letting receivers get behind them…. he answered “I don’t coach the safeties”…..

      1. I remember Rob needing a 2 pointer in the final seconds to win the game for USC….and… throwing the ball straight into the ground without being pressured….the guy next to me said “now that’s what I call a money player!”

  7. I’m not sure how many of us watched Stanford play against Hawaii, but from the looks of it, they could give USC some problems offensively. I’m afraid this game could come down to who has the ball last because I’m not sold on USC’s defense.

    2. If that is true then this season will not go well. Stanford is not a good team just because they defeated Hawaii.

USC still looked like a coaching mess to me. Incredibly talented players and a mess from a coaching perspective. The defense is still a mess, but it is obvious that defensive line is much better and the tackling is much better.

I think that the offensive line is good on the left side and center, but Tarquin and Kingston didnt always do well on pass protection from what I saw.

If I were Henson, I would be considering playing Elijah Paige alot more reps to see if he can take over the left tackle spot and then move Monheim back to right tackle or guard for the critical part of the season. I’m not convinced either Tarquin or Kingston has earned a starting role for the whole season.

I could actually see the end-of-season starting o-line as (left to right)…
      Paige
      Pregnon
      Dedich
      Noa or Quinones
      Monheim

    1. Missus Ed, maybe we never got the ND report card since Scottie knew anything less than an “A” for Caleb would have been ridiculous, but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.

“Ok, I HAVE to give Caleb an “A” —no I don’t —-it’s gonna be an “A-” —- no, it has to be an “A”—– NO, I can’t undermine my brand that way— I’m sticking with “A-” —– crap! no one will buy that grade: it HAS to be an “A” —-but it also HAS to be an “A-” —– I can’t deal with this…. ”

  8. Caleb is improving in the pocket, when it’s clean he is going through his progressions enough. It must be good to strive for perfection, but not on every play, not when you have Caleb. I don’t agree with Wolfe regarding our QB’S in the future, Moss has a fast release, he might not have Caleb arm talent. Nelson must make a big leap on the scout team. Nelson needs to RS in my opinion so we don’t burn his Freshman year. He needs to work on ball placement, touch throws. He has hitch in his release which affects his accuracy. In addition he is very frail on the lower body. Bulk up to about 210.

…tebow asked me to relay the following sentiments to you: “As far as I’m concerned –Caleb doesn’t appear frail in his lower body”….

    2. eric – you make some good points and i agree that everyone is selling Moss short. I really like the guy and he is a trojan through and through, he would be great for next year. I think Riley is talented enough to build a great team with Moss as QB. Moss might be more of a effective game manager, where he distributes the ball and there might be more of a focus on the run game, so a better offensive line might be important. Hopefully the new players really gel for next year, I can see Paige being great, Pregnon being great, Noa being great and I think that Tobias Raymond is going to be great at right tackle by next year. Will Banuelos be ready as center by next year? Maybe we need one or two transfers to compete for a line position next year?

If Moss plays next year, that means Nelson didnt develop and he will leave because that new QB is coming in either 2025 or 2026. So Moss for 1-2 years and then the new hot QB. Nelson needs to beat out Moss or he goes.

Anyone who says Riley cant build an offense around Moss is just wrong. Riley’s achilles heel is is loyalty to coaching staff.

      1. Gametv I wouldn’t doubt it on Nelson’s future, if he doesn’t improve by the spring. Time is not on his side unless he really wants it he will prove us all wrong.
