USC Morning Buzz: Raleek Brown Situation Gets Clearer

The Raleek Brown situation is becoming clearer. He wants to redshirt to protect his eligibility. USC’s coaches do not want him to redshirt.

Whatever the stated reasons, Brown redshirting follows what wide receiver Gary Bryant did last year. Brown obviously wants three years of eligibility if/when he transfers. Lincoln Riley doesn’t want to redshirt him but also doesn’t seem too interested in playing him.

A good question is how did things sour so quickly? Brown was a Riley favorite, committing to Oklahoma and then switching to USC just a few days after Riley got hired.

I was one of the few who dared mention Brown was inconsistent last season, so I’m not saying he should be playing more or defending him. But it’s unusual to see a coach jettison a player so quickly, especially one who might break a big play at any moment.

One other thing: If Brown is simply trying to redshirt and not transfer, was he at the game Saturday?

  • Speaking of Bryant, he caught 7 passes for 100 yards and 2 TDs in Oregon’s 81-7 victory over Portland State.
  • Here’s a look at Deion Sanders’ pre-game speech Saturday.

  1. It didn’t sour as much as he got pushed out. USC has perhaps the best WR group in the country, and his height is a negative at that position. RB would be a better position for Raleek if he was a better blocker, but there is more competition this year as well.

    1. Is it that he CAN’T block or WON’T block ? If he won’t then see ya, if he can’t, then is it because of his size ? Lack of coaching ? Didn’t the SC coaches see that he couldn’t or wouldn’t block when he was at MD ?

You would think that Mr Offensive Genius would be able to scheme plays for this kid, maybe the kids a pain in the ass, we’ll never know.

I saw a clip of Caleb running for a his life against might Nevada, looks like the OL CAN’T block.

And Jim Leonhard needs to be hired today, fuck that idiot Grinch and that bigger fuckhead Donte, both should have been fired last year

  2. The OC Register said Brown is redshirting due to an injury. If I were Scott I’d be asking if the NCAA accepts a bruised ego as an actual injury.
It is good to see the Wolf is taking credit for pointing out Brown’s lack of football talent, however isn’t that like saying Wolf cried Wolf?

Just wondering about Bill Plaschke’s take on the “Glory Hog’s” two (2) game, low key bozo FB appreciation. Is Sean Salisbury on top of this trending story?

  3. Scott – you missed the word “why”

Jeez, why not use MS Word to help you proofread before posting?

Anyway, had a great time at the game on Saturday – a lot of celebrity sightings!!

It also was refreshing to not go onto this blog during game and enjoy the offensive performance. The D line and second string LBs are good as well. No comment on Donte’s DBs other than it must be coaching, right?

    1. When you’re right you’re right. It’s not Donte’s coaching. We just have serious problems in the secondary year after year since Donte came to USC.

    2. Nevada has a transfer 4 star RB from Oregon, sub 4.4 guy, but his longest rush was just 11 yards. The D-line and LBs played much better. Glad to see Shane Lee turning in his best performance since coming to USC, and Davis showing his speed.

      1. Don’t get what I’m about to say wrong –I love Drew Brown [Ali’s “Spiritual Trainer”] but the poetic “pump” speech gets old fast —and Drew gave it once too often to Ali. In the Frazier fight Brown exhorted Ali with “If Frazier wins his family will be happy —but if you win all the janitors working nights, all the mothers with babies they can’t feed, all the men who sleep on the street every night cuz they ain’t got no homes will be happy.” Ali looked like he was listening to every word. When Drew started giving pretty much the same speech between rounds in the Norton fight Ali punched him. It’s on tape.
Colorado may have a great season— but it won’t be because that speech gets re-worded every pre-game.

  6. Raleek, no blocky no rocky. Real simple. If the boy won’t perform in practice then the HC has to remove him from the depth chart. Riley will not say anything bad about Raleek, he is one of Rileys recruits. What Raleek needs to do is work harder, unless he is really hurt, and get noticed. Otherwise I cannot see where he will be missed when he takes the bag from Oregon and moves north.

  7. Ralek needs to get more maturity. He could play like Lloyd. If he commits himself to that. But Mater Dei coaching wasn’t the best to prepare athletes for Division 1 football. Now, having to learn so much is making the process harder to matriculate. If he leaves then God bless and hopefully it works out for him. It’s business, nothing personal. If he stays then he’ll benefit from learning while waiting.

No matter what he needs to learn how to compete. The high school stuff belongs at high school. The switch was suggested to make him a better receiver. Oh well.

  9. Kelly, typical ex-domer. The team performance was total disorganization in the second half. No wonder that Kelly wasn’t LSU’s first choice, even with his faux southern accent that he tried to cultivate overnight. One newspaper nailed yesterday’s game with the headline of “Kelly Flops”.

On Sept. 23rd we will get a clear picture of what ND is all about when they play Ohio St. at home. Sounds like Hartman, a Wake Forest transfer at QB, will work his way into the Heisman conversation.

  10. Ralek is a great athlete and if he’s not 100% it’s not worth burning a year of eligibility. We have the deepest receiver group in the nation by far… But we also have a huge need in our defensive backfield. There’s nothing wrong with being a two way player! Just look at Colorado this past weekend. They have a terrific two way player who was on the field for more than 120 plays. Perhaps the players in our receiving corps who have a hard nose and love to dish out a little contact could switch to the other side of the ball and make a huge impact… literally

    1. Hate to lose a guy with his explosiveness, but I just don’t see him competing at WR, given he is 5’8″, and Joiner (and potentially Peterson, I thought he looked good during the spring scrimmage) are ahead of him at RB as true frosh. If he wants to play, the portal is prob where he should go.

This turned into a numbers game for Brown. USC has an embarrassment of riches at the receiver position, with a limited number of touches to go around. The line was drawn and Brown fell outside the line.

His best hope and future are clearly at another program. I believe a player gets greater development through game experience than repetitions at practice. IMO, Riley is force-feeding Tackett’s development which has led to obvious lapses on the playing field.

  12. I was hoping to be calling him ‘touchdown brown’ soon…guess that is not going to happen; the defense is playing fairly well now that starters are emerging, except the injuries at linebacker.

  13. after thinking about it more, i think the linebacker situation is one of the biggest issues on the defense.

tackett is getting playing time, but he simply does not know what he is doing out there yet. the coaches love his athleticism and he can be elite once he understands the game, but he isnt there yet. right now, raesjon is the guy who really brings something unique to that position. but will he get to play?

i feel like the secondary will get much tighter once they have CRW and Covington on the field as corners. the 2nd safety and nickel position are the biggest weaknesses in my mind.
